Smoking is such a nuisance on cruise ships

You mean you "cough" at some posts? Another smoker who doesn't care, thanks for sharing. Since you don't care about your health either, I suppose we shouldn't take it personally. Also, newsflash, your cigarette smell goes way farther than 5 cabins. If cruise lines start labeling parts of the ship as "stink zones" when they market their ship, that would be fine with me, at least then you would get what you pay for.

Is that where the unshowered morbidly obese people will be housed as well?

And it's a vicious circle.  The nonsmokers with their healthy lungs, throats and noses will always be irritated by smoke.   Unfortunately, it’s a biological thing.

As a non-smoker with all of the above I find it very easy not to act like an entitled snob over other people's choices. If the tiny smoking areas (minus the casino as I agree it's unnecessary to have indoor smoking) bother someone SO much, maybe they should stay home or fit themselves with an oxygen mask. I sure hope nobody here is from the LA or NYC areas because, if so, you've got bigger fish to fry with all that lovely smog. Mmmmmmmmmmm.

I've lived both in LA and NYC, and NYC air quality is awesome, one of the best in country for a large city, and in general.

I'm the same way.  As long as the "other people's choices" don't affect my family's health or they don't selfishly inconvenience my family.  Smokers smoking in a smoking area doesn't bother me.  In fact I appreciate that they are keeping their smoke in the designated areas.  If I don't agree with the location of designated smoking area that's an issue I have with the cruise line, not the smoker.

To me those are crazy high, considering according to your website my county had two unhealthy days in ten years. Interesting website though.

I've read many of the posts and quite frankly I am disgusted.  Whats next? Place people on decks based on race, creed, color, religion? Those that drink to the front, non drinkers to the back?? I can give you more things to gripe about--parents who leave the kids run amok, high priced bingo, no straws, gee whiz---guess next suggestion will be the same colored jump suits for all!!  If you smoke, be respectful, if not do your own thing...…….

If all smokers were respectful, we wouldn’t have these threads.  I believe 99% of smokers are though.  But it is pretty clear that smoking is not allowed on the balconies, so please follow these rules.  I also wish that NCL would retro fit their ships casinos with enclosed smoking areas like the Bliss.  That would take care of the majority of the complaints.  Personally, I only go to land casinos that are non-smoking.  They are packed.  So making their establishments non-smoking does not affect their business at all.  It might be a state law I’m not sure, but it makes visiting enjoyable.

Was on Breakaway a few weeks ago for the 4th time.  Hate that several smoking areas interfere with enjoyment of important ship locations (pool, Spice H2O bar, Shanghai's, and sometimes other areas near casinos) but just have to avoid them since the ship was great for sailing from NYC before moving.  What I did not expect, was a problem with my balcony on deck port side.  The smoke from the pool deck came down to our balconies regularly.  Never occurred to me to avoid all midship balconies in last half of the ship on that side.

Seriously, are you comparing smoking to skin color? Do you have a skin color allergy? Does skin color make your clothes stink like dog poop?

Did several cruises on the SUN and frankly the casino was disgusting. Lots of smoke inside and that spread to the nearby areas.

Neither me or my girl smoke so it was annoying. We couldnt really play at the casino at at all and also the casino itself is a way to other areas so its hard to avoid.

Casino smoking should just be removed or they should install wayyy better air extractors.

Just off Escape yesterday and of course there were those who smoked on their balconies.  And the smoke does not just waft away from the ship; it lingers at the stern.  Especially in the aft-facing balconies.

There are now signs on the balcony doors (finally!) that it's a non-smoking balcony, but too many just do not care and smoke anyway.   I have to say the crew on Escape did approach a few to tell them they were not allowed to smoke.   Non-smokers need to spend more time reporting it to show what a problem it is.  Although I would rather not spend my vacation time doing that, I also don't want to spend it smelling cigarette/cigar smoke.

I'm at the point where I think it would be a miracle not to smell cigarette smoke on the balcony on a cruise.

People do indeed have the right to smoke and that's their personal choice.   But please respect others and smoke only in the designated areas.   Non-smokers do not want to smell it.

And yes, the entire areas around the casino smelled like stale cigarette smoke on Escape.

I for one only smoke in designated areas on the ship or for that matter where ever I may be. Sure it would be nice to have a smoke on balcony but it's not permitted end of story. That said the nagging BS doesn't stop by the non smokers as they bitch because they have knowingly walked right through a smoking area and can smell it.

Thank you so much for doing that.   I missed pointing out in that post that I want to thank all those who smoke in the designated areas only.

And yes, if you walk through a casino or the designated area don't complain about smoke.  You're going to smell it as those are some places that it's allowed.

In open spaces of the ship it doesnt matter. But the problem with the casino at least in the SUN where I had my experience cruising is that to get to the shops you go by the casino. Its NCL who is at fault here, not the smokers. Smoking areas should not be a corridor to other areas OR the exhaust vents should be upgraded.

Are you saying that you have to go THRU the casino to get to the shops... or that you have to go AROUND it?  Never been on the Sun, yet.

On Norwegian Sun, you can 1) go around the casino on the port side corridor and then access the shops; 2) go through the casino and access the shops; 3) access the shops from the aft elevators and avoid the casino.

My wife is very sensitive to smoke. Is it generally a problem on the getaway?

It she's one of these people who is "sick for weeks" after a wiff of smoke outdoors, then yes she will have a major problem. I sailed on Getaway and smelled smoke in and near the casino and nowhere else. However, I hung around smokers outside so that would count but besides being right next to them it was never an issue. However, I don't get hysterical about outdoor smoke, so, ymmv.

I agree. Indoor smoking is just sheerly disgusting and should be banned, frankly.

Some people have legitimate health issues.  They are not hysterical.  🙄

If someone is sick for weeks because of an occasional wiff of smoke outside, they should never leave their home under any circumstance. 🙄🙄🙄🙄
