I'm wondering how far back the "seaview bar area" extends?  Does the smoking area include the deck chairs all the way back to the back rail of the ship?  On our last cruise, there were some people taking ashtrays off the tables and taking them to smoke in sun loungers right next to the back rail.   I thought the smoking area was pretty much understood to be the tables under the overhang on the starboard side.

The lido aft deck rules seem pretty laxed for quite a while. As long as I have cruised on HAL, that area was considered "Adults Only", yet, on almost every cruise, we would see at least one child swimming in the pool, sitting in the smoking section, etc. I think the staff can only do so much.

That being said, we smoke in the shade where the ashtrays are on the tables.

Yes, your understanding is correct. Unfortunately, adherence to the rules is not always enforced.

I have recently been on the Volendam, the Oosterdam, Noordam, and Zuiderdam and none had smoking in the casino the nights i was there. Last year I was on the Zaandam and there was smoking at least the few nights I was there .  I don’t know if this is by Captain’s choice or company policy

I’m sure this has been addressed numerous times in this thread, but wasn’t able to find an answer scrolling back several pages, so hopefully my redundancy is forgivable.

I’d planned to quit smoking months before my upcoming trip, but that didn’t happen, and I’m faced with trying to source nicotine for a 6-week trip which includes two cruises. I assume the HAL shops are still selling cartons of cigarettes. Are they still running the deal where you buy 4 cartons for the price of 3?

Assuming the answers above are “yes,” anyone know if they sell just the classic Marlboro Gold Pack? And if so, anyone have a rough estimate on what a carton sells for on HAL these days?

Yes they do still sell the 4 for 3, last cruise it was about $185 for the Marlboros.   DH has never bought by the pack but I understand you can buy single packs at the bars.

We have been sailing on the Koningsdam (Mexico, Hawaii, Pac Coast) and HAL allows smoking in the casino.  No non-smoking nights that I am aware of.   I think the K probably offers free and special rates for casino patrons.  Got to keep those ships full!

Here are the ships you can and can not smoke in the casino.

Thank you! Just clarifying — the ~$185 was for 4 cartons? Or a single carton?

I'm not in a position to search right now, but if you do a search for my Live AK review from Eurodam April 29 - May 6 last year, I posted pictures of the cig sale in the Shops w/pricing.

The price went up for some brands

I agree. I hate walking by the casino. Although,  I thought they had nights where there was no smoking in the casino.

I do a fair amount of walking on the Promenade deck….average about 5 miles a day (which is 15 laps) and cruise a lot.  Just saying this to let you know that I am out there a LOT.

One thing that has always baffled me is the lack of “no smoking” signs out there, and  on a daily basis, I come across at least one person smoking or vaping.  It’s usually in the later hours of the day.

I have continually mentioned this in my after-cruise feedback….and never get a response, but hope springs eternal.

Just walk into guest services and report the smoking, guest services will come and resolve the issue.  You can only smoke in designated areas, HAL doesn't need to specifically post any area as non-smoking.  It's been my experience that anyone smoking on the Promenade deck is well aware that they are not supposed to be smoking there.

By the time I reported, they notified security, and they would go out there, the offender would be gone :(.

That wasn't my experience.  The guest services person walked with me on the Promenade deck to location of the smoker and addressed the issue.  I will admit that I was lucky that there wasn't a line at guest services at the time.

We were on Koningsdam recently, and our muster station was in the casino.   Really?  The stinkiest place on the ship was our muster station.  The funny thing is, we had said we wouldn't go into the smoking areas even if our lives depended on it, and our lives actually depended on it, according to the SOLAS rules onboard that cruise.

I wish the casino's were non-smoking but have never found them to be stinky on boarding. They've had many hours to air out. You must be very sensitive.

It's amazing how many thousands of people have developed great sensitivity to smoking over the years since the media decided that's what needed to happen.  I happen to be very sensitive to the smell of garbage and sewage but nobody wants to discuss that.

I'd say that cigarette smoke is pretty much in the same "ick" category as garbage & sewage.    Obviously, if you're choosing to inhale the stuff for hours a day, you would disagree.
