Galápagos Islands, Antarctica, Havana.

I should've included Havana -- wonderful place and people; great food too.

I think that some small ships dock on the Thames in London. Maybe Silversea?

Only the very small ships. I was lucky enough to depart from there on a Voyages to Antiquity sailing (350 pax).

Yes!  My all time favorite cruise was my recent trip to the Galapagos on Celebrity Flora. The islands were everything they were hyped to be, and the ship/cruise, although belonging to a mass market line, blew away every premium and luxury ship I’ve sailed.   Everything was perfect.

Santorini

We spent a few days there just a few years ago. It joined the short list I'd never return to due to the mobs of people. And that was in the spring.

We were there last year in the early spring.  No crowds in Oia.  Might have had to wait a minute if that at the more popular photo sites.  Not on my top list of return places, but It certainly is picturesque & beautiful views.

It IS stunning. Here's a shot from a different island but you "get the picture" LOL. View from from our apt. balcony on Paros.

We somehow found a totally off the wall charming place in Santorini by getting lost!

We were lost and came upon a museum in a cave. We and another couple toured the museum. The guide did the tour in English for us and Greek for the other couple. We then showed him our map from HAL, and asked where we were on the map. He chuckled and said we were off the map. He asked if we had a car, and when we said no, he tried unsuccessfully to get us a cab. When that did not work, he pointed out a shortcut to us.

So, the moral of this story is that you can always find off the main grid places even if it is by accident.

We went with a cheap package tour at the end of September, and stayed in a small taverna on the beach side of this island... I think our aeroplane was one of the very few to fly in that week, except for the ones which brought weekenders from Athens on Friday evening. Not many on the beaches, and we kept away from Fira when the cruise ships were in. We hired a car, and our friends had a quad bike, and nowhere was crowded when the ships weren't there.

Our memories are mainly of the fresh food cooked by mamma at the taverna, served on the beach, and occasionally going to restaurants in Fira when the last ship sailed away.

And- taking the small boats across to the other islands for fresh fish barbeques, or round the end of the island for OH to snorkel.

Bliss...

We went on Celebrity Xpedition and I agree with everything you say.  We especially liked the lack of cheesy shows, upselling, noisy pools, etc. Upscale and peaceful is hard to beat.  We love remote places where animals and the land are the attraction as we don’t care to shop, gamble, etc.

While it does not offer much time on any island, the sea days out and back combined with the five or so port calls is a good combination.

I'd rather fly and spend the extra week+ actually in Hawaii.

If the sole point is to see Hawaii — yes.  I do enjoy sea days as a value in themselves.  The ideal, I suppose would be to sail out, stay that “extra” week then sail back..  Sadly, the modern world rarely offers the ideal.   While Hawaii is great to see, certainly better than New Jersey; then, so is Rhode Island.

Istanbul, Barcelona, Istanbul, Yokohama, Shanghai, Istanbul, Barcelona, Yokohama, Shanghai .... did I mention Istanbul?

Truth be known, we have never visited a port we did not enjoy for one reason or anther but the above four ports are our absolute favourite, with Istanbul at the head of the list.

Do you spend any extra time in those cities?

Extra time in Barcelona, Shanghai and Istanbul but not Yokohama yet (just two, two-day, port visits).
We like to combine time on land (land cruises?) before and/or after all of our cruises:  especially in ports that we particularly love or ports close to other favourite cities, like Rome.

Istanbul is our favourite because it has so many, integrated, public transit systems and also because there are so many contrasting areas on both sides of the river to explore and enjoy.

If you have an opportunity to visit Istanbul again, give some thought about spending a week in Cappadocia.

We did an escorted land tour of Turkey a few years ago and it was amazing.

After almost fifty years of cruising and land trips I have many favorite ports. The most amazing sail in was Sydney.

Auckland

Dubai

Venice

Santorini

Hong Kong

Christ Church

Paris (river cruise)

I love to watch as the ship navigates to port, especially when they approach the dock from the side.

Happy cruising.
