Burnt or over cooked food is not my forte.

If one doesn't know the basics of cooking, one should not choose the Hot Rock option at Izumi. If one has been to a place like The Melting Pot, one should be able to handle Izumi.

Oh I do but the idea of cooking on hot rocks kind of grosses me out.

No different than a griddle, it's just that the material is not iron/steel but is a man made material designed to be cooked on (Ishiyaki).

Based on the Topic title, I thought this might be a Donald Westlake book sequel or  Robert Redford movie 2.😁

I am a Westlake fan and a Izumi fan.  The title also brought me fond thoughts of both.  Took me a minute to get the Redford reference though. I have read the book way more recently than I have watched the movie. I have most of Westlake books (under all of his aliases) and rotate thru them at least yearly.  I have likely had a several Westlaks books in my stateroom while dining at Izumi on the Grandeur eating a Hot Rocks meal.

and  ... Grifters, Payback, Parker,  Split, Two Much, Bank Shot, and many others.

I can picture Dortmunder & Parker better in the books than the movies.

And the other characters that frequent his novels.  If you have read any of his other psudonyms,

Tucker Coe, and several others are also a good read.

It is a shame there will be no more from Westlake.

I've read some Sam Holt books and the Alan Marshall soft porn confab with Lawrence Block(think the stand alone are out of print) but didn't know about Tucker Coe. Will look that up.

OK, I'm return the high jack to original topic.

We usually do Izumi for lunch so stick with the sushi.  Maybe look into the hot rock next time as we enjoy that experience on land.

Why, you are your own Hibachi chef - what's the diff?

For me it is not an ew factor.

During the week and weekend, I cook fresh dinners for me and my wife for dinner with some leftovers that we eat in mid-weekend.  On Friday's I like to go out for dinner that someone else to cook.

We have a Korean restaurant that we we enjoy.  Originally I tried it out on my own, ordering items from the kitchen.  Excellent food.

However, they have this metal grill thing, similiar to hot rocks.  The owner would prep the marinade and do the first batch.  Great.  After that you were on your own in regards to the remaining two batches.

Let's just say my wife realized, that I wasn't happy going out for dinner and having to cook my own meal.

If the hot rocks people actually cook your meal for you, as a cook in the family, great.

However if they don't...

If your spouse does the cooking at home, I would recommend you discuss who will be doing the cooking on the hot rocks.

I would hope that either the customer would ask that before ordering or the waiter would make it obvious.

Like everyone else here we have had cruises cancelled and so I have been spending more time on cruise planner for the next 8 cruises which are now bunched together over a 15 month period, yikes. We are happy with the complimentary dining, but also like to try the specialty dining packages from time to time, and have always loved Hot Rock at Izumi. My question is, does anyone know if the hot rock is an option on the ships that do not have Hibachi? i.e., Jewell, Explorer, Navigator? Or do they just have the one price fits all sushi meal? DH does not want to try sushi, but we could go there for the hot rock. Hopefully sailing soon!

I love the hot rock but it’s random as to what ships have them... the easiest way to tell is if Izumi is on the royal promenade / royal esplanade... it won’t have hot rock... if it’s up on Viking Crown, you’re more likely to see hot rocks. I haven’t seen hot rocks offered on ships where hibachi is offered.

Fun fact: Monarch of the Seas used to had hot rock when it sailed out of California... long before Izumi was a thing. They had it forward of the windjammer in the “sushi and karaoke bar”... It was my first time trying hot rocks and it had a much wider selection such as lamb chops and several cuts of steaks. I still remember watching them pull the hot rock out of the oven and bring it to your table. I remembered being excited to see it rolled out to other ships, than was disappointed to see it was a smaller selection of stuff you get to cook on the hot rock... but it’s still fun.  Was able to find a copy of the menu as proof Monarch had hot rocks.
