How do you get home if tested positive on a cruise? This is the airline's rules per the CDC.

It does not talk about restroom breaks or grabbing food, but does allow for driving home after a plane trip, so would also be applicable for after a cruise.

Infection control measures during ground transport

  • Public transportation, rideshare services, or taxis should not be used.
  • Unless they are alone in their vehicle, travelers should continue to wear a mask until they have reached the location where they will complete their self-isolation or quarantine.
  • If a traveler requires the assistance of a driver (e.g., family member), precautions should be in place to protect the driver. The driver should be informed of the potential exposure risk and provided with information about preventing transmission of COVID-19.
    • Driver and passenger(s) should both wear masks during the transport.
    • Driver and passenger(s) should remain separated by at least 6 feet when outside the vehicle. Passenger(s) should sit in the back seat of the vehicle.
    • Driver should avoid using the recirculated air option for the car’s ventilation during passenger transport; use the car’s vents to bring in fresh outside air and/or lower the vehicle windows.
    • Hand sanitizer containing at least 60% ethanol or 70% isopropanol should be available. Driver and passenger should practice good hand hygiene.
  • The vehicles used for ground transportation of persons with COVID-19 or close contacts should be cleaned and sanitized after use.

@firefly this is the only guideline I could find regarding positive Covid and returning from a trip.

Thanks. So it may be possible.

I'm following the folks on rcl who drove to florida and were flown home and them trying to get their car. Insurance wouldnt cover it but they finally got a relative to pick it up but it's still not home. So just flying people home still has some draw backs.

Following .. thanks for starting a new thread.

Good question since it says that rideshare, taxis or public transportation should not be used.

The cruise lines are under different CDC guidelines relating to the Conditional Sail Order.

The rules listed above are for people who have been transported by private air arrangements such as the ones flown home from the Bahamas since Covid positive people are not allowed to fly by commercial air. The operator of the private air transport must report to the CDC that appropriate ground transport has been arranged to ensure the passenger is taken to the place where he will complete his quarantine.

The question remains about whether people who drove themselves to the port can drive themselves home or if they are required to quarantine in a contracted hotel before returning home.

I wish carnival would give us more information about what happens after the cruise if you test positive. Relieve some minds. I get they dont want to panic people, but we want to know.

The woman and her daughter that flew into Galveston and were positive on the breeze reported she got almost no assistance from Carnival. She was given a list of hotels... the numbers were wrong on most of them. When she located a hotel and asked for assistance to get there she was told she had to get her own ride. When she told them she would have to call an ambulance the cruise line finally provided transportation to the hotel.

It is basically the same problem as people who left their cars in a parking garage. You’d have to inform the hotel what happened and make arrangements to pick it up later.

There are lots like ez cruise that your car is out in the open you can walk to. Which is what I'm asking about. You dont have to encounter anyone, just put your luggage in the trunk and off you can drive.

I understand what you are asking. No one seems to be able to find a definitive answer.

The rules listed in the first post are NOT for airlines. They are for private air transport. If you click the link and read the whole thing, it is clear that there are guidelines for getting the

passenger all the way to his door including reporting the ground transportation methods to CDC.

The only thing I can find in the CSO for cruise ships spells out rules for quarantine before travel home, regardless of how you got to the port.

That's us. We use the cruise terminal parking. Basically right across the street. No one will stop me from crossing the street to pick up my personal vehicle. Now retrieving our luggage is another matter which I'm working on. If Carnival can escort us out of the cruise terminal with our luggage(basically dump us on the sidewalk), that would be perfect for us. But who knows about these details? I sure don't.

Are they testing everyone before disembarking? Or is it mostly a concern for unvaccinated and those tested after contact testing? I know we have to have a negative test to board but did I miss that they are testing at the end too?

They only test unvaccinated 24 hours prior to disembark, but if they are positive then they start tracing.

.. or if you have symptoms you go and ask medical about.

No one knows how those 4 plus a crew member were tested and carnival ain't saying.

Hope you don't test positive on a cruise to Jamaica (not sure if they even go there any more). My husband and I had to get off a cruise in Ocho Rios and travel by taxi to Montego Bay to catch a plane. His mother was on her deathbed and we had only a few hours to get back to the states and see her. We made it in time for him to see them take her body away. It was super sad. This was about 8 years ago. I don't remember the exact reasons why we had to go to another airport. All I can say is we saw another side of Jamaica. Lush resorts and on the opposite side people living in shacks really.

Anyway, what I wanted to say is that it can be rough getting out of certain ports, Carnival only helps so much.

In other words, the CDC has no guidelines either. Everything caveats with the very first line.

  • Public transportation, rideshare services, or taxis should not be used.

Should is not a definitive protocol. You don't have to, it is guidance. Now, I am fine with not being able to fly back home. However, the cruise line should work with the people that tested positive to get a rental car. I am fine with that, I can drive my family home. What I am not fine with is having to quarantine at a hotel for 10-days.

If there’s an unvaccinated child in the family, they get tested. If the child is positive, other family members are quarantined and tested; if positive, they are isolated.

You could post on Craigslist for a driver willing to drive one way and fly home one way!

What about a cruise that arrives back to Long Beach and you cannot drive due to a disability like low Vision and you fly in and out of LAX?

Based on what happened in Galveston, the people had to quarantine for 10 days in a hotel before they could fly home.

Here in Hawaii they are strict but in Texas will they call the police if the family left the Hotel or went swimming or had someone drive them  home? In Hawaii you could be fined $5000.for violating quarrintine. Yes that means leaving your room.

I have not seen that discussed anywhere.

That may be handled differently by each jurisdiction. I know a co-worker that lives in a different county than me that tested positive. Every day the police drove by his house at a different time and he had to signal to them through the window that he was there. I didn't hear about anything like that happening to anyone who lives in my county.

I imagine that if you go to a hotel on a "quarantine" that they will be aware of it. So if you go days without ordering food they will check on you and see that you left. Not sure what the repercussions would be.

But it is a valid point wouldn't you agree?

Yes, I agree and something people flying in should be considering.  I am within driving distance of the port so not as much of an issue for me as it would be for someone quarantined in a hotel. My plan is to be sure the house is stocked well before I leave for my next cruise in case I have to quarantine when I return.

Precisely why we just cancelled our Panorama 9-18 cruise.  Two of the four in our group would be at risk of repercussions at work if they had to miss an extra 10 days due to quarantine.  Long Beach to KY is too far for us to drive assuming we were allowed to rent a car and drive home.  Just too much uncertainty to risk a job over.

Carnival was very nice about the cancellation.  I expected to have to get something from employers, but they were as nice as could be, and I already have my email stating no penalty for cancellation.  May be a bit before I get the actual money in bank, but I'm not complaining.
