A promo video from back then! Such a fun watch 🙂

Love that video!! Can you imagine people today walking out on the deck and seeing passengers standing at the rails holding loaded 12 gauge shotguns in their hands?? How times have changed LOL!!

My very first cruise was on the Carnival Mardi Gras in the early 70s when I was single. The ship was just a few months old. I would bet this Carnivale is a sister ship to the Mardi Gras. Both ships were purchased from Canadian Pacific Line, according to Wiki.

OMG.......FUN TIMES! I have a photo of a young good looking Italian somalier planting a kiss on my mouth at the main dining room table. My, have times changed!!

Guys didn't really wear short shorts back then did they? lol

Yes we did and they were a lot better at keeping you cooled off than the ones today that go down to your knees.  Same with swim trunks.  Now you get out of the water and you take a gallon of water with you.  I wish they'd go back to the shorter style again.

I wish they would bring back a "now" version of the old TV series "Loveboat".  :classic_biggrin:

We watch old episodes occasionally and I am blown away at how unbelievably silly they are. I was just a kid and watched it all in first run and every passenger, every plotline, seemed completely plausible at the time. That TV show single-handedly revived the industry, starting the expansion trend still going on today.

My new wife and I boarded the Carnivale on December 16, 1979 for our honeymoon.  We booked months in advance and were able to get one of the few rooms with a double bed.

I remember, all through the 90's, checking the deck plans very carefully, to make sure we got a cabin with a double bed, not singles or bunks.  I looked at some of those deck plans the other day; I had circled cabins all over the ship that would be acceptable.

I was either on the Festivale or Carnivale  I can't remember now.  First cruise, boarded in San Juan to the southern Caribbean.   It was a dream of mine to visit Martinique.   My friend and I had a bunk cabin, it was fun!

I worked in the gift shop on the Carnivale back in 1980, then managed the shops on the Mardi Gras and Festivale.  It was by far the most fun I've ever had in a work place.  Back then girls were only allowed to work in the gift shop or the casino, officers were encouraged to "mingle" with female passengers, and we were allowed access to the club (back then called the Disco) but were not allowed on the dance floor.

Things have certainly changed - my daughter worked one contract on the Glory a few years back as part of the entertainment staff.  When I cruised 2 weeks after she joined, we had to get written permission from security for her to even be near my cabin.  No more fraternizing - but then again male crew have lots of female crew to "mingle" with.

I was a dealer in the casino on the Tropicale when she was brand new, 1983-1985.  You are so right.. same, women only in Casino, gift shop, spa and entertainers.  Americans only allowed in same.  Could sit in Disco but not dance.  A tradition on your last night if resigning could dance…. Lol.  Officers were encouraged to mingle with female passengers.. and they did.  Guests could come onboard in home port (Long Beach for me), I’m from there so my friends and family came all the time to visit.  Big difference in way were “tracked”… we were not at all.  No one new where we were on port days.  We used to get off ship in Puerto Vallarta (day off Casino was completely closed) and fly to Mazatlan for $30, get a hotel and go to their discos all night long and meet the ship there the next afternoon..  no one knew nor cared.  We never even considered what would happen if the ship missed the port.. lol.  Could never do that now for sure.  Best time of my life.. left for a guy..  lol.  Wished I would have stayed

Great memories! Tropicale was my first cruise ever in 84 or 85! I might have seen you, lol! Top 3 cruises for me, out of about 20. Staff was awesome, it seemed as though they really loved their jobs back then, not that they don't now, but back then they seemed more genuinely happy! Miss the skeet shooting and hitting golf balls off the ship! Reminds me of my blond 'girlfriend'. She asked what happens to all the golf balls? I told her that there were a few workers in scuba behind the ship that would get all the balls and they would bring back on the ship later! She believed it, lol!!!! Good times, good times!

I love the pictures!! I couldn’t find any of mine when I sailed the Carnivale in 1977. It was our school’s senior cruise and my first. We had inside cabin, bunks, metal lockers for closets and 4 girls! We showered sitting on the toilet. It was amazing! We ordered room service free and thought we were rich! Ah, the memories. Thank you for the trip down memory lane!
