Pre-owned handbags in shops onboard-were others aware?

Fake Louis Vuitton’s are easy spotted, even at a a distance. It is also illegal to sell them in the US as well. Honestly I spend much less on purses now. In the past I would buy several Coach or Michael Knorr’s bags ever year, now I am satisfied buying a LV every several years.
I bought a bag while in Venice and it always reminds me of a wonderful cruise. Also if you buy in Europe you can apply to have your tax refunded as you leave.

If it is too good to be true, it’s a fake.

LOL--- Unless the guy /gal in the store tells ya " It's real --- would I lie to you "?

When I see someone looking at them I will warn them about not being able to get them serviced at a Authorized Rolex  Service Center.

I've often told the story about the old ''f--t " buying a " pre-loved '' Rolex for the 32 yr old beautiful blond he was with. Ya shoulda seen the kiss she gave him -- and, in front of other people.

Trust me, I don't think he was thinking about " Servicing " ( the watch ) at that time.

LOL---I also don't think she was an " Authorized " travelling companion.

Regarding the pre-loved LV bags, here is an ad for them from last November on the Reflection that definitely states they are pre-loved:

They most certainly don’t hide the fact that they are used. They are very honest about it.

Same with the Rolex.

They may be honest about the fact the watches are pre owned but my issue is that they are not clear with people that these watches cannot be properly serviced by Rolex.  Rolex do not approve of their watches being modified using non-original parts and this in fact de-values the watch. Rolex would not touch them nor an accredited Rolex watchmaker who are the only ones who can access correct parts and have the correct tools to work on them.
I don’t think people realise that and If customers did know, I don’t think they would choose to invest in such an item.

They also sell used and restored Rolex watches but the prices of those aren't cheap and the bigger problem is that they use non-Rolex parts to fix them up. I tried a Rolex Datejust last time and it wasn't bad but at a price point of $6,600 with some non-genuine parts such as the crystal, no papers except those of the restoration company... hard pass!

I see this as a very sensible pass!
It is not worth throwing money away on a modified Rolex that may leak due to non a correct crystal or bezel. Sometimes the hands don’t clear properly if there are diamonds added to the dial so these are not bargains at all in my opinion.

And Effy jewelry can’t be registered on the Effy site. Where is the responsibility of the buyer to do their homework before they make a significant purchase? Since access to the internet is part of the AI package easy investigation is possible.

I also think the ship companies should have integrity. I wouldn’t imagine most people think they are going to be sold something that contains counterfeit parts on a cruise ship!! On the beach maybe…….!! 😅

Pre-owned is still better than those knockoffs from China passing off as the real McCoy.

I totally agree that there’s nothing wrong with preowned. What’s wrong is watches being sold without customers realising the true value is not the same as one that hasn’t been modified.

The ones we saw were in  a separate case and clearly marked as used/vintage. There were also being offered at crazy prices.

Separate from all the other watches (Tag Heuer etc)  yes, but in general neither Celebrity or any other cruise line can sell real, new Rolex watches. I think the only exception would be the MS Europa as they have a WEMPE shop which is an official Rolex dealer. However since most of us know the supply of Rolex AD's I'd guess it to be similarly abysmal than on land.

But people still buy trash especially when they don't know what they're getting. Look at the fools buying "art" on the cruise for exorbitant amounts of money while knowing nothing about it. Personally I rather flush it at the casino, at least I can earn a few free cruises that way. 😂

Did you notice the tags? They list if the crystal has been replaced and I’ve never seen one where it wasn’t. A replaced crystal significantly affects the price. To me, the prices were crazy high.

About the pre-loved Rolex watches being sold on board:

The prices of the watches I saw were around $ 6500US .

I "assumed" ( but did not ask a Salesperson ) that they were not changed in any way and have " original " Rolex parts.

I thought that because they were being sold in International Waters, that the " Authorized Rolex Dealer " did not apply.

It appears that I'm wrong on both counts and very happy I did not buy one for ---( you know who ).

Even accounting for inflation my Rolex bought in 83, is selling for twice what I paid for it.   I am sure the current shortage of new Rolex watches has also helped the market for used watches.   If you have a Rolex you know the outlandish prices for service including the required maintenance.   I have to travel an hour to get to an authorized seller and they send the watch to an authorized maintenance facility.   In six to eight weeks you will get your watch back (pre-COVID).

Personally, I get all my Rolex watches regularly serviced as I understand they are investments. There aren’t a lot of authorised or Rolex accredited watchmakers so I think it’s worth the wait to get it done properly. As you said to double its money since 83 that’s a fabulous return.

I'm of the opinion that if you are spending that much money on a watch or handbag (and I have spent a lot on watches and my husband has a used Rolex), it is your responsibility as the consumer to know whether you are buying from an authorized dealer and exactly what you are buying.  We do our research before making any sort of purchase like this.  Unless the value doesn't matter to you, but then why not just buy a cheap handbag or watch?

Cheap fakes, sure.  If the team making the fake is both skilled and uses quality materials, they can be nearly impossible to spot the fakes.  Should be noted if vendor A is selling a LV fake for $50 and vendor B is selling a LV fake for $500, both vendors could be selling the same cheap as it gets quality bag.

Often you can find them in major cities, been this way for decades and as many major metros decide to de-criminalize minor crimes

Yes, unless one find an unusually favorable exchange rate, Europe is the cheapest place to get them assuming you correctly apply for and receive the VAT rebate

I thought it was very obvious that they were pre-owned.  A lot of them you can see the wear and tear.  Not sure about the comment about seeing this in port and not on a ship, these are not fakes they are just pre-owned.

Often when you go to the store, the floor models are out on display and will have signs of wear.  Many pax, perhaps with large OBCs due to FCC and one too many drinks may wrongly assume they'll receive a new bag from the back.  Also the ones in the window displays often have zero wear.

The 90 % “ good “ fakes are even easy to spot if you know LV handbags. Serial numbers are wrong for the handbag , hardware is different, leather handles feels differently, patterns are cut wrong, etc.

We were not looking to buy, just looking around.  Someone in my  family lost the vintage Rolex that was her mother's and I had restored.  The prices were beyond stupid on the ship but at least I had some ideas about what to expect to replace the lost watch, which we later found......

What Goes Around Comes Around prices on LV is very much over retail.  I don't think there is LV branding on the ship should be the first indication that the bags are secondary market. Depending on the age/condition deals can be had. You will not find a deal on a cruise ship.

The prices for Rolex are beyond stupid period no matter where you're looking to acquire them. Can't believe people are paying these prices for pot&pan steel watches.
