Agree and don't make eye contact with whomever is speaking (yelling at) to you.

Not making eye contact is always good advice.  My DH who grew up on a farm has difficulty ignoring trouble.  Glance at a discrete moment in case trouble develops but just keep walking as if you are invisible.  We once heard a comedian give a spiel about acting crazier than the crazies.  I tried it one day in a very suspect situation and it worked!  I just threw my arms in the air and said “I have never been to Pittsburgh” in a half crazed voice.  The person ran in the other direction.  Never let potential embarrassment jeopardize your life

The fact that NYC is on your list means your reason for not going isn't based on actual data or violent crime rates, as NYC's violent crime rate is shockingly low for a city of its size...so I'd love to know your reason for avoiding cities where you have a very small chance, as a tourist, of something violent happening to you.

When you are the victim, any rate is too high

That being said, there are some ports and cities that once I've seen them, I stay on the ship.  Heck, there are some US cities that I'll never step foot in again that I have enjoyed in the past - LA, Portland, Seattle, Chicago, NYC for example.

You gotta have some street smarts.

The state of New York is 8th on the list of the number of mass shootings with 5.  The top ones in order numbers are California (23), Florida (12), Texas (12), Washington (7), Colorado (7), Wisconsin (5), Pennsylvania (5).  Do you plan to completely avoid all those states?  Yes I do realize that these numbers are total and not per capita but they are still useful numbers.  My home state of Nevada has only 2.

I assume, then, that you avoid driving (or riding) anywhere in a car, as your odds of being the victim of an accident caused by a drunk, impaired or reckless driver are astronomically higher than being the victim of a violent crime as a tourist.

"No, Thank you" in Jamaica translates as "No, Yes".  Best to say nothing and keep walking.

That is why I don't want to go there again.  It just isn't fun.

Come on now. Why make that assumption.   They didn't say they would avoid anything.  They said it isn't OK being a victim, regardless of the odds.  More people might get hurt falling out of the bed, but that doesn't make a street assault less traumatic.

Apologies, I thought the poster I quoted was the same one who earlier said they avoided several cities due to the higher likelihood of being a victim of violent crime. Turns out my memory was playing tricks....

(See, it really costs nothing to say sorry when one is wrong. 😉)

I understand that but it was a number that I could come up w easily.  I did a further search and came up with this.  New York is #11 at the low end of the number of violent crimes.  Take a look at the ones at the bottom that are the worse state.  How about we all move to Vermont.  Sort of interesting that Illinois which has Chicago which is the murder capitol of the country is right about in the middle.  I guess that my home state of Nevada is not so good on this list.

What is the methodology behind this "ranking", one that claims that DC is the safest? LOL

Without additional info, we can only assume that "crime" is literal, meaning it includes non-violent crimes.

Murderers, rapists, and armed robbers (the violent ones that were the focus of that image I posted) pose a far more relevant threat than shoplifters.

Murder capital of the country by sheer number, but nowhere close to the top when it comes to per capita where it is ranked behind such places as Milwaukee, Rochester, Kansas City, and Richmond.

Plus it is reported crimes or crimes that enter the court system?  Pretty sure in some places it is a waste of time to report criminals activities like the shops in places where there is no prosecution for property crimes, assaults or where the police don't even respond,

For cruisers, which I believe it the intent of this thread, Barcelona may be the worst.  Have watched two crimes in Barcelona, one upstairs in a restaurant where the perp grabbed a bag and ran downstairs...and tumbled yje last 6 steps...  Victim got the bag back.  Only place I have lost a wallet was in Paris near the Eiffel tower - not pay attention standing in line to buy water for the bus ride back to the ship.  The perps (Roma) charged a $2 phone call to a credit card.  Have watched people being beaten by police in Jerusalem - horrible.

BL:  If you don't feel safe and the hair on the back of your neck is standing up, don't go there.  Always be aware of your situation and surroundings.  Walk with determination.  We have traveled the world and visited all 7 continents (penguins in Antarctica were non threatening).  You can be robbed/assaulted just about anywhere.  I once drove about 5 miles off the Interstate in central Louisiana - not the place I wanted to be and quickly u-turned back to civilization.  Traveled extensively in eastern Europe during the "Communist" era and never felt threatened.

On road trips, my gauge for safety is "if I get a flat tire now, I'm driving on it".  Had that feeling in east St. Louis one time after taking a wrong exit.

On foot in cities, I scan ahead constantly and will sometimes cross the street when we don't need to because of somebody I've noticed down the block.

We did the same in Rio a number of years ago.  Went into a jewelry store to exchange some money (rates were 25 percent better than the official bank rate at that time).  Came out and sensed that we were being followed.

We walked back to our hotel, stayed in our room for a half hour then went back out.

We had a similar experience in Miami.

If you use that idea - consider the city of Ocean Beach NY which has a crime rate of 16,000 which is the highest rate of any city in the state.  This is the most dangerous city in New York State to be in.  Their crime rate is 16507 as compared to the runner up which has a crime rate of 3996.   So is it really so dangerous to be in Ocean Beach.  When Ocean Beach has a population of 59 while the runner up is Buffalo w a population of 260.000.  The crime in Ocean Beach was probably a theft.

That is only common sense --- I learned the "cross the street" pre-emptive move at age 7 in New York.

It did not say that there were 16,000 crimes which would hardly be likely in a city of less than 100 people. The crime index is based on the number of crimes as compared to the total population of the city.  Remember the population of Ocean Beach.

Thanks for the call out, @Underwatr. I was confused because my eyes saw "New York" and thought it was comparing cities instead of states. This chart only shows that "new york state" as a whole is safer than DC as a whole...it does nothing to refute the other guy's suggestion that New York *city* is unsafe, an idea that appears to be supported by the stat I posted.

I understand your well stated point. But I think you miss the point of the victim's viewpoint. That person who had their property stolen in Ocean Beach isn't going to shrug it off because of a stat.
