How long before you are off the ship?

Recommended Posts

We have a cruise from Miami on Norwegian Joy.  We are flying out of Fort Lauderdale later in the day, around 4pm.  Our plan is to take the Brightline up to the FLL area for our flight.  I am trying to book but I'm not sure what time I should book it for.  I have plenty of time so there is no rush to get off of the ship and I would rather relax and make our way off slowly and miss a bulk of the crowd if possible and then grab our stuff and go.

How long does it generally take to get off the ship when you disembark if you're not in a hurry?  The schedule says Arrive 7am in Miami.

Also, it's been several years since I've cruised.  Is there breakfast before getting off the ship?  Or do I need to plan for something to eat after we're off?

Debarkation day always strikes me as a good morning to have a leisurely room service breakfast - than hang out in room as long as possible unless I am trying to make an early flight.

No, they starve you! 😛  Just kidding. They actually start feeding an hour or two earlier.

how long before you are off the ship?

depends on the infraction.

usually, they will give you a warning first.

let's say you smoked on your balcony. you'll get a warning letter stating that if the behavior continues, the ship reserves the right to remove you and your party at the next port, at your expense. you'll also forfeit the money you paid for the rest of the cruise.

for more serious infractions, they could lock you up until you get to the next port.

if you do something really bad on embarkation day, they could wait just beyond the port for the coast guard to escort you off the ship. or, in extreme cases, they could turn the ship around and return to the port, just as your dad threatened to do when you were a kid. ("don't make me turn this car around!")

so, how long before you are off the ship? it really depends on a variety of factors.

I surely hope that you were being facetious.  Otherwise, this may be the most bizarre response I've ever seen to a question on CC.

We always do breakfast in the MDR on disembarkation day. That way we are out of the room so stewards can start doing their job for the next passenger.

And we always prearrange a shuttle from the port to FLL. Pickup around 8:30.

A couple of different venues will be open for breakfast including the Buffet (6:00-8:30) and Main Dining Room (6:30-8:30). The Observation lounge used to have a continental breakfast, but they may have discontinued that.

You need to be out of your room by 8:00. You can stay onboard in a public area until 9:30ish when they call all ashore. Then your vacation is really over.

We took the Brightline last month from our hotel in Fort Lauderdale to the Port of Miami.  Instead of paying for coach class seating, we opted for the upgrade to Premium Class.  It not only included access to the upscale departure lounge where breakfast was available, but also included Uber rides from our hotel to the station and from the ending station to the port.  The seats onboard the train also were more comfortable with more leg room than in coach class.  As I recall, the cost of Uber between Miami airport and the Miami station as well as between the Fort Lauderdale airport and the Fort Lauderdale Brightline station are also included as part of the Premium fare.  You need to arrange your pickup times with Brightline, not directly with Uber, a day or more in advance.  The Premium Class ticket costs a bit more, of course, but the convenience of having them arrange your connections for you was worth it to us, and may also be for you.  As others have said, you generally will be able to exit the ship by as early as 8:00 and almost certainly will be through the port terminal and ready to meet your ride no later than 9:00 or 9:30.

When we have some time to spare before our flight home or the next leg of our journey, we usually like to have a leisurely breakfast in the main dining room.  We pack our bags first, leaving them in an out of the way corner of our room, then go down to breakfast.  When we return to our room, we brush our teeth, freshen up, tuck away any brushes or toiletries into our carry on bag, then schlep our bags down to the atrium, where we wait and enjoy passing our time until the crowds start to thin out.  Then we carry our bags with us as we exit the ship, hopeful that we can slide through customs/immigration/passport control with ease after the crowd has passed.

Please note that on most cruises the main dining room offers only a pared down menu for breakfast on departure day.  If you were planning on having an omelette, Eggs Benedict, Huevos Ranchero, or some other rather exotic treat for breakfast, make sure you do that some other time during the cruise.  Don't wait until departure day, when you may find that you have a choice of scrambled eggs, eggs scrambled, or scrambled eggs.

Do you do the shuttle through the cruiseline or a private company?

once you get off the ship, you have to go thru the very long lines for customs/immigration. You will still have time, but I would add an extra hour to your time frame.  Might be less, but 1 hour added for customs would be more than needed.  And of cours, the ship could always be delayed, or embarkation process can be delayed.

(for those that care, none of you do)

I enjoyed UK's contribution. It gave me a nice laugh over my morning coffee. First time this week that I've remembered to bring my coffee from home, too!

Did you arrange it ahead of time or just jump on a shuttle at the airport?

Last January we flew in and out of West Palm and took Brightline up to get a flight.

We taxied to the Brightline station (less than 15 minutes) and purchased tickets for the next train.  Plenty of seating on the train so there was no need to pre-purchase.

Just as with any other port it only takes  few minutes to get off of the ship.  Get in line at yoru assigned time and you will be off in a matter of minutes.

Now if you are asjking WHAT TIME are you off of the sip, that depends on the debarkation time you select.

That's if everything goes off on schedule.

The ship could arrive late to the port.

Or, as I experience just a few weeks ago in Miami, they actually called my group 45 minutes early; got on the line and shortly after it stopped moving - there was a hold up in the customs area.

Result - despite early call, we were off much later than expected and we missed our flight from MIA.

Bottom line - no guarantees on any times.

not one word in the post met any criteria for wit, satire or humor. just  smart*** response to a legitimate question.so my friend put that in your smoke and pipe it !!!

five people (so far) have laughed at that post.

several people have applauded two other posts in which forum contributors speak out in favor of that post. humor is highly subjective and one either gets it or one doesn't. that doesn't make it wrong and it doesn't mean that it doesn't meet some imaginary criteria for wit, satire or humor.

that post was a playful pastiche of an "emily litella" style mistaken rant.

not only that, it was a clever way of responding to a very frequently asked question! how many times in the NCL forum do we see people complain about dead horses being beaten while they roll their virtual eyes at anybody who dares to ask about tipping or what time rooms will be ready or how quickly we can disembark?

that post, by assuming that couldn't possibly be the question being asked, responds differently... thereby waking people up so that they question their rote responses to this frequently asked question, which, it should be noted, has been treated respectfully and answered several times throughout this thread.

there is a simple remedy if one thinks the posts of a particular forum member have little value. simply place them on "ignore" so that one no longer has to view their posts. the action can always be undone if one discovers they miss that poster's contribution.

to quote ira gershwin, as folks so often do around here, "let's call the whole thing off."
