Cozumel is a small island and Americans stick out like sore thumbs. He apparently had no money on him and gave a taxi driver a watch for payment.....doesn't look like he could have gone very far. San Miguel is small. Total developed area on the island is about 15 square miles. The island itself is 185 square miles. Lots and lots and lots of jungle.

Hogladyrider Posted April 11 #34 Share Posted April 11 While I have not visited Cozumel in several years, back then many of the employees lived off the island. I have read that the past few years crime has increased on the island, but again I have not visited Cozumel since 2018. My heart goes out to this family and I am still hoping and praying the gentleman is found safely and has not fallen into the hands of the wrong individuals. What does surprise me is what little attention this missing guest is receiving from the media.

Last news report was 22 hours ago. Since he’s been missing for over a week, it doesn’t seem likely that he would be found alive. https://www.foxnews.com/us/search-missing-south-carolina-cruise-passenger-complicated-jungle-terrain-family-demands-us-help.amp I’m hoping that they find him soon but it would be a miracle. leaveitallbehind Posted April 11 #37 Share Posted April 11 (edited) Just to be clear on this person's form of dementia, as there are various forms exhibiting various symptoms: ....he was recently diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, a group of diseases caused by progressive nerve cell loss that affects a person’s behavior and not memory. Further: Frontotemporal disorders (FTD), sometimes called frontotemporal dementia, are the result of damage to neurons in the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain. Many possible symptoms can result, including unusual behaviors, emotional problems, trouble communicating, difficulty with work, or difficulty with walking. But most importantly I just hope he can be found and that his family can find some comfort. Edited April 11 by leaveitallbehind

I'm far more fearful of setting foot in any of the major US cities at present than I am of visiting Cozumel. And I think the concerns in Haiti and potential effect with Labadee have been rather well substantiated since RCCL has suspended that port of call at present. If you google the situation there are numerous reports concerning his disappearance and on going search efforts by a number of different agencies including the local military. The family is apparently also reaching out via social media to the US for support and awareness of the situation.

Lane Hog Posted April 13 Author #43 Share Posted April 13 I feel worse for the family -- they have to live with how he died, and at this point, I have to believe this is the case. Some say taking him on that trip was a questionable decision, but it's letting him be unattended for just a few moments that's what was inexcusable and ultimately at issue. We share in the caretaking for my wife's parents who both have varying degrees of dementia, and would never think of letting one of them wander into a bathroom unescorted or monitored. You never know if there's a second exit. it's just short of two weeks without a confirmed sighting, and the island itself is 90% natural jungle. It could take years to find his remains, if at all.

I live in Orlando and nearly every day I get a news alert on my phone about a shooting somewhere in the vicinity. But most of these shootings are domestic-related, or late at night when there is probably some shady stuff going down anyways... but now you know in case you want to steer clear! This was to be their last major vacation together. It's entirely possibly he didn't want to burden the family with his dementia over the next few years and took matters into his own hands.
