phabric Posted August 30, 2015 #1 Share Posted August 30, 2015 I am thinking on taking the 7 day Greece & Turkey cruise at the end of next August on the Royal. People have mentioned that it is unbearable hot/humid at that time of year. August is the only time I can travel. Has anybody been at that time of year? iancal Posted August 30, 2015 #4 Share Posted August 30, 2015 (edited) You can expect 32-36. We are going today. It has been 35 in Athens all week. We usually travel there in mid/late Sept or Ovt. For that very reason. Edited August 30, 2015 by iancal
kdooley Posted August 30, 2015 #5 Share Posted August 30, 2015 We have been in Istanbul for the past 3 days and it has been lovely - at least to a South Carolina family! Low humidity and high 70's.

Coming from Canada.. it will be HOT  A vacation is a vacation, I don't do well in hot, I survived. The sights and cultural are amazing. I'd say look hard at stretching this to 10-12 days with a day added on the front and back as flight and time change make for some overhead on a vacation like this. chris11256 Posted August 30, 2015 #8 Share Posted August 30, 2015 I've been to Greece in July/August and it will be very very hot. The day we arrived it was 41 degrees(celsius, about 105 farenheit)We found it wasn't very humid at all, it was very dry heat.

RuthC Posted August 31, 2015 #10 Share Posted August 31, 2015 Heck, I thought it was too darned hot in both those countries in late October/early November. In the summer? Unbearable, as far as I'm concerned.
GolfMom321 Posted September 2, 2015 #11 Share Posted September 2, 2015 1--it will likely be very hot (think 90s-100+ F), and quite humid. 2--at least in Turkey, "air conditioning" is not what you're used to at home. It might cool it down to the high 80s F--if you're lucky) 3--Istanbul is often a good bit cooler than Greece and southern Turkey. The day we were in Ephesus it was 114 degrees, with high humidity and blazing sunshine. Umbrellas were useless, since the marble reflected the sun upwards. cantwaitt Posted September 2, 2015 #12 Share Posted September 2, 2015 I was there last August. It was hot but not too hot to dissuade you from going. It was very hot in Ephesus but I only have great memories. Go!
kc20202 Posted September 12, 2015 #13 Share Posted September 12, 2015 I was there a couple of weeks ago on the Island Princess - Mykonos on the 20th August, then Istanbul, Kusadasi and Athens on the days following. It was around 90 each day and humid. I would have preferred late September but had the same issue as you - I had to go in August because of work. It was hot and sweaty, just make sure you have a hat and stay hydrated and stay in the shade where you can. Having a little fan from the souvenir shops to fan yourself with also helps, I wore out a couple. If I had the chance to go again and only August was available - I'd be there in a flash, I don't regret it one bit!
sail7seas Posted September 12, 2015 #14 Share Posted September 12, 2015 HOT and humid. We toured Acropolis in Athens mid August and it was hot, hot, hot but so fantastic to see we didn't care. Stay hydrated and go at your own pace. I'd do it again without hesitation.

Rare cruisemom42 Posted September 13, 2015 #16 Share Posted September 13, 2015 I just got back from a land trip to Romania (end of August/early September). The weather was beastly hot and very humid, especially near the Black Sea. There were times when I had difficulty enjoying myself -- during a several hour visit to an archaeological site, during a half-day walk tour in Bucharest when the temps were near 100, in a museum with big glass walls and no air conditioning (we estimated it was well in excess of 100 inside). I do not do well in these temps and certainly would have enjoyed my trip more in weather that was even a little cooler!
navybankerteacher Posted September 13, 2015 #17 Share Posted September 13, 2015 Greece and Turkey are better done in October. August is best described as unbearable. If August is the only time of year you can travel, do it in Northern Europe or Alaska, saving the Eastern Med for when you are able to pick your time. SadieN Posted September 14, 2015 #18 Share Posted September 14, 2015 (edited) If you have to go in August check out ways to keep cool Cooling neck bands Broad hats with neck coverings Personal fans Stay well hydrated, you'll sweat it out Very dark sunglasses Wicking clothing... The athletic area of Target and Walmart have lots of these. Edited September 14, 2015 by SadieN
iancal Posted September 14, 2015 #19 Share Posted September 14, 2015 It was 37/38 in Athens when we were there, and a little humid. Pelopponse was the same but windy. Islands are 28-30 but feel cooler because of the breeze. We would never consider an August trip to the Med.
NatalieWood Posted September 14, 2015 #20 Share Posted September 14, 2015 I'm in a similar situation-- as a teacher I can only go in July or August. Is July better weather wise? Or not much of a difference? We have narrowed it down to one in July and one in August-- itinerary and weather are now deciding factors but we're going! rockdoctor Posted September 14, 2015 #21 Share Posted September 14, 2015 As college professors, we too had to go in the summer. Yes it will be hot. Yes it will be crowded. Yes you will have an amazing time. Stay hydrated. We wore long sleeve shirts and broad brim hats, and paced ourselves. We later went in November and in many places, it was just as crowded. Have a great time!
