Aboard the silhouette on the trans. not so bothered about the obvious increase of trying to increase revenue until tonight. Now the captain is at an Jewelry event! In my opinion, celebrity is really overreaching!! The captain also mentioned various activities the first sea day, all of which had additional costs. Sad really.

Hey for a long time the Captain and his/her staff have always been a cost centre, now they are a profit centre. Boy, the accountants back at corporate must be so happy.:D

The only time I'd be concerned about the captain's new gig as a salesman will be when he starts selling life jackets or oars.:eek:

This is not new. The CD almost always follows the Captains daily update with his spiel about what is going on. You probably just tuned it out like many of us do! :D

It's always been that way. At least since I started sailing in 2006.

Hang on. I thought things like jewellery sales and art auctions were run by retail concessions. If the Captain is attending with the aim of generating extra income then it goes to the concessions, and only indirectly to Celebrity via any kickbacks.

This to me is a very bad look. It gives the impression that the captain is "for sale". I hope that this is not a formal arrangement between Celebrity and the concession. Of course if he is just there on a whim then that's his business.

On the Equinox in September the Captain was the guest of honor at the ribbon cutting for at least one if not more of the special sales events. I thought it was a little "over the top", with the sole purpose of generating interest for merchandise that would otherwise go unnoticed.

Yeah, but if sales are down/targets aren't being met, there'll be pressure both ways for 'new ideas'. It's not exactly arms length.

Had the captain doing similar with the shops in the past year. Thought it was a bit whiffy, but if that's what they want to do...

The stores might be run by a third party "concessionaire" but I have no doubt that the cruise line gets a good percentage of every dollar spent there.

get a grip. ignore the Captain if you need to.

The stores might be run by a third party "concessionaire" but I have no doubt that the cruise line gets a good percentage of every dollar spent there.

And because the Captain doesn't have to worry about the profitability of the concessionaire, (just the total sales) you might be able to get a really great deal from the Captain - like 10 watches for $10.:D

Unless his new bonus structure includes a 'percentage of total on-board sales' clause. Then he'll be :D:D:D:D:D

I can tell you that this has been going on for a while now. We were on Equinox in March, 2013, when they had a late-night sales event in the jewelry shop. It was advertised in the daily bulletin as something like: Diamonds under the Stars -- featuring (you guessed it) -- Captain Mantzavinos! :rolleyes:

If it's a matter of "Hey Cap, if you've got a spare 5 minutes could you pop down to the jewellery sale and help us drum up some business" then sure, no problem.

It's when it becomes "Get down there and drum up some business because our bottom line depends on it" that the problems start.

When a cost centre is expected to generate income then its core responsibilities can quickly be compromised. I'd rather not see the captain put in that position.

I would expect it to be like that. Stores that are in malls pay a base rent plus a percentage of sales about as complicated as the US tax code. A friend had a cigar shop in a mall. He said that the contract was on 8 1/2 x 11 sheets and about 10" thick. He was forced out a few years ago because they installed a more profitable food court where his store located.

The captain is officially on call 24 hours a day but he has time off as do the other staff members. What he wants or chooses to do in his spare time is his privilege. I think it is rather nice to see the staff mingling among the passengers and supporting the stores on board.

When a mayor, governor, president, king or queen shows up for a ground breaking ceremony or ribbon cutting do they get compensated or under the table pay? It is part of their duty or good will.

It just adds to the excitement and makes it more special when they are they to do it.

2012 on Panama Canal there was a "big jewelry unveiling". Captain, Staff Captain, Hotel Director & one other officer each escorted a female passenger who was modeling the " new jewelry" down the stairway to the main foyer and the into the store. Drew a big crowd.

Recently have heard the Captain tout a shore excursion for each port. We thought it was a bit much
