Looks like rain all week, should I be concerned?

Hello,

I'm leaving Saturday and have been following the weather reports. Each port has 50-80% chance of rain. If this is the case, I'll still enjoy my cruise but I just find it strange that it shows rain allllll week.

Any meteorologists amongst us? lol What exactly does that percentage mean and do they distinguish between rain all day and those 15 minute downpours followed by sun?

I don't really have the means to get away as often as I'd like so some sun is preferable. Any good news for me?? :)

The first question is where are you going? If you are head to the Caribbean or some other tropics they get a lot of rain but much of it is short lived. If there is a major storm system brewing then it changes everything including the possibility of changes in your itinerary. Worst case is you spend a lot of time around the indoor pool...or go shopping

You should be ok. I would be more concerned if it was predicted only sunshine. The weather reporter has the best job ever. They are never held accountable and have all kinds of excuses why their predictions weren't right.

I went to a open house at a NOAA Weather station. I asked if they ever looked outside to see what the weather is as they will say it is sunny and out my window it is raining. The answer that I was given was that the rain is a surface condition and the aren't concerned about that. They are more concerned about the atmosphere.

So if rain is predicted you will have a lot of sunshine. Plus it is a 50 to 80 percent chance and that means that only 50 to 80 percent of the area may have rain. The captain will avoid those areas.

Happy cruising 🌊🚢🇺🇸🌅

This is not a techno forecast, but an on the ground (or water) observation from many cruises. Frankly, over the years the forecast for Caribbean ports is mostly" 30% chance of rain" or "partly cloudy". I would say 90 percent of the time the weather has been great. 50% means to us, more dark clouds, but not necessarily rain.

Sorry to paint a gloomy picture, but I lived in the Eastern Caribbean (USVI) for nine years, and it can be very rainy in October and November. (I remember one Thanksgiving week when it rained daily - all day). Then the "Christmas winds" arrive, and by February, the weather is spectacular.

The good news is that you aren't in a hotel. You'll move to other ports and may get different systems.

the Eastern Caribbean:eek:

Grand Caymen, Cozumel, Labadee and Montego Bay are the Western

Last December I took my first caribbean cruise. There was intense rain and overcast. I know, I know, everyone said it should not have happened but it did. We had an aft cabin, wind and rain hit the glass siders hard and needless to say we could rarely stand on the balcony.

We learned a couple of things, you can use the blow dryer to dry out your shoes. Really wished I had upgraded the balcony to suite because the cabin was crowded with all the drying jackets and clothes. And hand washed items will not dry with so much humidity, so use the blow dryer there too. We used the laundry a lot. Focus to ship activities and when the sun shines get off the ship! Also be prepared to change shore activities or come back muddy.

We were on the Western 11 day.

We've had rain on Caribbean cruises too. Sometimes it absolutely pours for a few hours and sometimes just a few minutes. Try not to put too much reliance on the weather forecast. They're usually wrong.

I always tell myself that in the fall/winter I'd rather be in the warm Caribbean rain than the cold Vancouver rain ;)

HA. You know what? 'i apparently don't even know where I'm going. I am scheduled for Jamaica as well, 80% chance of rain there right? So I guess I was mistaken and am on the western carib route.

I saw the roll call. I need to sign up for the party.

This bad forecast thing has happened a lot

But we've always lucked out. We don't worry about it.

There's lots to do even in bad weather, lots to enjoy maybe catch some indoor entertainment we would have missed & bring a few extra dollars for the casino

Happy sailing

AS of right now, Cozumel has changed and looks pretty good and Grand Cayman has changed to "PM Thunderstorms." I'll take that for now.

Was anyone else considering getting the day pass for Rose Hall Montego Bay? I'm holding off for now I think because $114 per person is a lot to spend if it's going to be pouring. If it does pour there, I might just head to MArgaritaville and have my own party. :p to you, rain.

Wow Rose Hall has gone up significantly since I was there in December 2012. I really don't think it is worth $114 per person....... Maybe $90, but $114 is ridiculous.

And on a rainy day I'd value it substantially less......
