Going to the bank asking for $1 bills

For goodness sake! I wasn't trying to be rude...you on the other hand. Anyway, I had read $2.00 were a good idea and truthfully I have a hard time believing people have issues receiving them and then spending them.

Not getting in the middle of the tiff between you and CruiseGuy.....but if you don't believe that they HATE $2 bills, just ask them, the next cruise you take. No one here is jumping on you for doing this...just trying to help.

Leaving for the Pride this Sunday and just did my before-trip chore of going to the bank and asking for x amount of cash and $100 of it being in $1 & $5 bills. I always feel the need to follow it up with "I am going on a cruise" because I feel like they look at me like I am a pervert.

Anyone else do this and feel like they need to justify why?:D

The bank does not need an explanation. It is YOUR money and you can get it however you like. I cash one large check and hand them an list of what I want in each denomination and I offer them no explanation.

The way I have $1 and $5 bills for the cruise is that I "hoard" cash all year. At the end of each week when I get cash for the following, I put what I have leftover from the previous week in an envelope. I always have enough cash for tips, and the casino as well as being able to pay off our onboard expenses while onboard. I also save change and take it to the change machine at the credit union where the coin counter is free.

I just had to comment on your post. I NEVER spend $1.00 bills. At the end of every day I drop any $1.00 bills in a large coffee can. You would be blown away at the end of the month of how many that you have. These are never used for anything except for my vacation wherever I am going. I have had plenty of disposable cash for several cruises and even this past spring on the trip to England.

I do plan on asking the next time. I was just a little put off by

"$2 bills are not "cute" as a gift. It's annoying and rude."

Whatever makes people happy I guess."

I don't find it annoying or rude to try and do a nice thing for someone and it wasn't about making me happy, but the person I was trying to acknowledge happy and rewarded. If $2.00 bills are an issue I was completely unaware, and the only reason why I used $2.00 bills in the first place was because I read the idea here!

I 100% agree with you. That comment was unnecessary and rude in itself. You were doing a very kind thing, but it really is true. It is very difficult for them to cash in or pay for items with a $2 bill.

Wow. Some tellers might get nervous when you hand them a list and tell them how you want the money. Lol. Isn't that what bank robbers do?

Lol. I guess that some tellers might think the wrong thing about why you want all those singles.

I always keep an envelope of $1 bills tucked inside of my passport case. When it gets low, I restock it when I get cash prior to a cruise. I never spend the leftovers after I get back from a cruise. I just stash them away with my passport until my next cruise.

I also use it to take with us when we go ashore to pay taxi drivers, chair attendants, etc as they seem to NEVER have change......

I never have a problem using it all.......:D

This!! It amazes me how no one has change...ever. I always travel with plenty of small bills to avoid this.

Thank you. I feel just terrible about it. We truly thought we were doing a nice thing.

I find all I need is to break a twenty down to two $5 bills and ten $1 bills before flying to the port. Once I'm on board, it's easy to get more $5 and $10 bills to use as excursion tips from either the casino or guest services.

I can remember many threads on giving trinkets, dodads, $2 bills, coins, pens or pencils, and even a personal photo to cruise help as a "tip" - the consensus across all the cruise lines was "don't".

Actually you should be letting your bank and your Credit card company know you are going on a cruise and what ports you are going to go to.

We also take 100.00 worth of small bills. Every try to break a 20 in some port when you want to buy something that only costs 5 bucks?

plus the tipping that happens from the minuite you step off a plane.

My preference is the gold 1$ coin.

I do feel bad asking my teller to count me 70 $1 bills... but I also ask to note in my account that I'll be traveling in the Caribbean, and then the teller is usually eager to ask me about my trip and stuff. Which is great because I WILL TELL ANY AND EVERYBODY I AM ABOUT TO LEAVE ON A CRUISE WOOOO!

Heading to the bank for mine after work today!

Have fun on your cruise!

I only tell those who have to know about my travel plans. Burglars have "ears" everywhere.

This comed up from time to time... Some have said that they can't use vending machines and stuff with a $2 bill. I'm not sure how often that really happens though. Might just be difficult to send home and stuff, but I can't imagine they send cash although they might.

Regardless, I'm not sure why it might be rude... I'm guessing they wouldn't refuse it :D

In the last few years of my grandmothers life she had this thing where she had to go to the bank and put half her pension check in the bank and half she kept because she HAD to have money in the house God forbid an emergency. her expenses were small at that point, she didn't really do a lot or go anywhere that she spent a lot. So it added up pretty quick.

When she finally had to move in with my aunt and uncle and they were emptying her apartment . They found over $17,000 in 5s,10s,20s maybe a few 50s.

My uncle took it all to the bank and deposited it in her account. He said he felt like a **** or a drug dealer pulling out that huge wad of cash out on the counter. The teller was none to happy about counting it either. *LOL*

Gosh, sorry about that. I know our bank has a bill counter that goes super fast!

I agree with this. I guess I don't encounter enough people that need tipping or require payment with small bills, at least not initially.

Other thoughts:

* I wonder how many of our ship's employees could tell us who Susan B. Anthony or Sacajawea were.

* I never have a problem telling my bank how I want to withdraw my money.

I worked in a credit union for years. Trust me, the tellers don't think anything of people asking for a bunch of singles. Having someone deposit a whole wad of them usually sent us running for the hand sanitizer at the end of the transaction, though.

*LOL*

I used to bar tend and do security for several strip clubs back in my wild and crazy single days .

You were wise to use hand sanitizer

Instead of tipping with $2 bills, I have started handing out Groupons.

Now that's the best idea I ever read on a tipping thread.

But from now on it's $2's for me then when they say .."What's that" or "We don't like 2's" I can just say "OK" and stick it back in my pocket, thanks for the advice all.
