Cash From Onboard Account?

I apologize in advance if this is posted elsewhere, but I haven't seen an answer that quite satisfies me in my searches.

I am travelling with limited cash but ample credit card room. Can I get cash advanced to me from my onboard account, with the balance naturally settled at the end of the cruise? In the past I have used travellers cheques to get cash for going ashore.

Thanks & smooth sailings.

You don't say where your cruise is going. A Caribbean cruise could easily generate a different answer than a cruise in the Far East.

Still, a short and effective answer is that onshore ATM machines will give you what you request. Be sure to have PIN number or other login information available, and be sure to inform your financial institution of your travel plans.

If you purchase gaming chips before you sail, the casino cashier gives you folding money* when you redeem your letter/card. Once you have the cash, it's up to you to buy chips or just put it in your pocket, whistling as you leave the casino.

Please note that the fee-free option is for prepaid chips, which you can buy up until around 5 days before sailing. Once you are on the ship, cash advance fees apply.

* - When was the last time you worked "folding money" into a sentence?

I just might have to pay the fees. I just want small amounts if need be when going ashore. I have some cash now but looking in case I feel I need more.

I`ll figure it out. The main thing is that I CAN get cash from the ship in some form. Or from the ATM on my credit card.

Thanks.

It sounds like you will be getting a cash advance on your credit card (unless you are pre-paying it?)

Can I make a suggestion - ATM's in port on your bank card and on board....

visit the casino. charge to your on board account on the slots. Play a few games. Wait a few days and cash out. Continue on doing the same thing. No 3% fee and no charge.

You have to not be obvious but it certainly works.

Some of us play too much so there is no question :p:D

The front desk charges 3% for a cash advance while the ATM has a $6.50 flat fee, so for less than $217 at a time it's better to use the cash advance. All cash drawn will be $US, and if you want the currency of the port (if they have it) there will another exchange fee added. Edited by catl331

You can get a cash advance on board for a 3% service fee.

IF you normally play in the casino (especially slots), you can pick up some extra cash easily from them. When you sit down at the slot machine, put your cabin key card in and register a PIN. Then charge some money (more than you normally play plus whatever extra amount you want in cash) to you cabin. When you are done playing, put the remaining credits to your PLAYER ACCOUNT (its an option on the machine - easy to find and do). Then walk over to the casino cashier and ask to cash out your PLAYER ACCOUNT.

No fees involved and easy to do (IMO).

I basically do the same thing when playing at tables ... buy chips on my key card and then cash out when I`m done.

Sorry for resurrecting an oldish thread, but this was the only one I could find in a search for advance purchase of casino chips. I am logged into my mariner account but it doesn't appear I can purchase them in advance. I do see a package called "Lucky Night Out" but it only gives you $50 in chips and a bottle of Veuve for $162.59. Not quite what I was looking for. lol

HERE is a link to a pdf which shows what can be purchased. Under 'variety' item number 1969 is Casino Chips in $10 increments. I can't find a way to purchase online so you might have to call ships services to purchase this.

Why not take along a little extra US cash before leaving home?

You can keep excess amounts in your stateroom safe, and any cash that is left over at the end of your cruise can be applied to your shipboard account.

A few $50's takes no room to carry, can be cheaper to acquire at home, and can be easily changed for smaller denominations at the casino or front desk. Amazing how people make things difficult for themselves.

You can still cash your travelers checks for no charge at front office on HAL ships.

The only problem is that none of the banks in our area have travelers checks anymore.. Do those in Boston still sell them?

My bank claims they are no longer issued, but I don't know if that is true..

They've mostly been phased out in favor of travel cards (prepaid debit cards) but you can still buy them. Here's American Express' location finder:

Thanks..I really like Travelers Checks..

However, have never used a prepaid Debit card but wonder if you can get cash from an ATM on a Prepaid debit card?

Checked out that URL & got an answer that there is no location within 10 miles of my home (put in our ZIP code in SW Fla) to get Travelers checks, but CVS ,Walgreens Publix, & many other places will sell me a gift card..

Guess I should learn about gift cards..

BTW just checked for both 25 & 50 miles of our zip code & still no luck on getting travelers checks..Wonder why..

Travelers' Cheques are absolutely still sold, as I purchased some just last week. I was surprised my bank no longer sells them (first time that has happened to me), but AAA does for members.

If you are a member of AAA you can ask your local branch if they carry them.

I know what you mean about liking them. I love that I can get US currency when I am in Europe by cashing them at the Front Desk. I don't have to carry so much cash for additional tips, and can be certain I will have enough cash on the trip home, too.
