Connie in Key West overnight (2 Threads Merged)

We are parked at a place where their are 5 police cars on the pier so there must be a land link. Slow law enforcement day at KW:p. anyway yes they are actually tendering with the boats. Please do not flame me but do they ever offer a discount on future cruises because of this kind of disruption. This is just awful;)

While anything is possible, I wouldnt expect much (if anything) towards a future cruise, unless the cruise is further disrupted and/or cancelled. Here's hoping Celebrity will be able to resolve the mechanical issue.

Wow! That dock is very commonly used for cruise ship mooring. It's called the Outer Mole. Usually, they contract Old town Trollys and the Conch Train to shuttle people from the dock to downtown. It's about a 10 minute ride. I've seen ships have to stay the night for one reason or another, or come in due to storms elsewhere and it seems they've always been able to contract the shuttles. For you guys to be using the tenders, when you're at a dock, is bizarre to me. I think Celebrity might have dropped the ball on this one.

If nothing further happens you will probably not get any future cruise credits because of the issue with the engine. However you might get some OBC for the port being missed, plus some good will.

My six friends on board are disappointed to miss Cozumel, but making the best of it. Kwy West better than drifting in the gulf. Last year, was Celebrity able to quickly contract with some of their usual Nassau shore excursions? Looking for alternatives to the beach excursion they had in Cozumel, is it likely that X will be able to provide some, or should I research private options?

I wish I could help you out there, but it was our umpteenth time to Nassau and I'm not even sure if we got off the ship! :o

 

(thus we did not pay any attention to what they were able to put together)

Oh boy......hope it doesn't follow the Millie with her problems

 

Millie's '' problem'' was with one of her two azipods propulsion system.

MAJOR issue...which necessitated major corrective process.

 

Connie's appears to be with the turbine engine.

 

Ugh...this doesn't give me warm fuzzies.:( The problem may be different, but I'm booked on the Connie in May as a replacement for my cancelled Millennium cruise.:(

Please don't worry about Connie's current issues having anything to do with a Cruise in May. The current mechanical issue should be resolved in short order.

 

FWIW, we almost booked this sailing last week. However, I decided against it, as work is extremely busy, and we are sailing on Century in February.

 

Connie is one of our favorite X ships, and I'd book her again in a heartbeat.

Does sound weird that they are tendering. Maybe it has something to do with the work they are doing on the ship.

 

Are there other ships in port today?

There is a Disney cruise in port that is in the spot the Connie vacated. The Connie has been sent to Ole Mole. I guess they are tendering since the trolleys are tied up with the Disney ship.

 

Disney is at Pier B, which is downtown and does not use shuttles. Only the Outer Mole (aka Navy dock) uses shuttles because they have to be escorted on/off Navy property, and the Outer Mole is a good distance from downtown.

Hi,

If you can access the '' PTZ tv'' sites, the one with webcams operations at quite a few ports, including KeyWest, you can see Connie in the old Navy site; no gangway attached; strangely, tendering guests off'n'on from starboard side.

If you scroll down below the picture, and look at the right hand side, ( the tweet section) after scrolling down 2-3 picx,you'll see a very good capture of the new turbine engine being handled off the dock, about 8 hours ago.

Quite clear picture, given it's in the middle of the night.

That would indicate there was NOT a spare turbine engine on board, near the tender doorway ( seen them there on every ''M'' class we've ever sailed on...).

 

I wonder if RCL has obtained a special ''dispense'' to allow the casinos to be operationnal although still in Florida state waters...specially since this sailing appears to have some ''gamblers'' group(s) on board....

Possibly, but the new turbine is more likely to be a replacement for the spare that they were installing. The advantage of breaking down in port is that you can fix the problem and still have a spare available when at sea.

I doubt X would incur the expense of an emergency overnight shipment for a spare part.:rolleyes:

Sorry, but I'm not so sure about that. Celebrity must get the ship moving, and time is of the essence. I strongly believe that Celebrity would spend what it takes to facilitate the repair as quickly as possible.

Given some of Carnival's misadventures earlier this year, maybe Celebrity judges the expense of overnight shipment as minimal compared to the PR nightmare of a ship adrift. :)

There are two gas turbines powering M class ships and after Millie lost one azipod in Alaska it traveled all the way to the Bahamas with only the other one functioning to get to the repair dry dock. It would be an similar situation with the gas turbines. In fact I've been on a engine control room tour on Radiance of the Sea, another similar size GTV ship, where we were told that it only required one gas turbine to cruise at 17 knots or less. So both gas turbines would have to break down before the ship would be adrift.:D

They added an additional diesel engine to all the Millennium class ships since the cost of diesel fuel is SIGNIFICANTLY less expensive than the jet fuel used by the gas turbines. Each Millennium class ship normally sails using one gas turbine and the diesel engine. The diesel is used in port to supply shipboard power. I am sure that even if both gas turbines failed the ship would still be able to go along at a slow speed.

I'll try not to worry and keep my fingers crossed!:) I'm still waiting for my Millie FCC to be applied before I close the book on that cancelled cruise...I don't want to have to undo another one!:rolleyes:
