Trying to find out everything you all know about the Sun

I think of the Sun like this. When you board, she says, "welcome aboard. Just relax, have a drink, lie back by the pool, read a book, eat a relaxing meal, sleep in late if you wish, just enjoy the relaxed, non busy atmosphere." I just don't consider the Sun as an "exciting, fun, fun, fun, lets do something" ship. And the Sun atmosphere for the two of us is perfect. We recently sailed on the Getaway. Wonderful ship, beautiful, great crew, and lots...lots...lots to do constantly. But it was too much for us. It might be what you are looking for however.

Hello, we are cruising on Norwegian Sun, this November to Roatan, Belize, Costa Maya and Cozumel. We have only been on 1 prior cruise, was just a 5 day on Carnival Paradise, and, we had a blast. . Now on that ship, you had like 24 hrs a day pizza and ice cream for example, 24 hr room service, and some other things .. now, on the Sun, i hear that there is a chocolate buffet ?? You can dress up a couple nights if you want to, Carnival has there own website forum and if you read alot, we found out alot, ncl, doesn't .

We leave up to experienced cruisers on good stuff and bad also, on the Norwegian Sun ...

Thank you, Cyndee and Jeff

Wrong date for cruise, deleted. Oops. :o

This is a perfect description for us too. It is DH's favorite ship and one of mine.

I am looking forward to Las Ramblas Bar and Restaurant on deck 12 Aft. We have loved the Star Bar on other ships and this may be a similar place to hang out. The Great Outdoors was my favorite on the Spirit. Also the Observation Lounge on the Spirit was great. The Sun has both of these.

I am curious to check out the Java Cafe and see what they have in pastries now. I will be visiting there for the coffee in the early mornings!

Looking online, I didn't find any pictures of the Pacific Heights Restaurant. Does anyone have any?

We were on the Sun in December...don't remember it having the Pacific Heights restaurant. Moderno does serve pasta and salad for lunch, and dinner there was outstanding!!

Garden Cafe has a crepes station during dinner hours, we often skipped dessert in the MDR or specialty restaurants, and had crepes made to order. Also, hand dipped ice cream is served there too. When you walk into Garden Cafe from the pool area, pretty much immediately to your right is where crepes and ice cream are to be found. Pretty sure this was the omelette station too.

The Observation Lounge is a great place to relax, have a drink, read, or whatever. We spent a lot of time there, and the band that was there in the evenings was pretty good. Not sure if they are still there, but the name was Brilliant Band.

We LOVED the Sun....I'm pretty sure we are going to book her for Alaska next summer, unless we end up doing a Greek islands cruise.

I think Pacific Heights is now a Moderno extra charge at dinner restaurant. Correct, I'm adding the press release from Jan. 25, 2011

I hope the Sports Bar with its floor to ceiling windows is still there, entry from Great Outdoors, on opposite side from buffet. Correct again! That was a good place to get evening snacks, have a drink, and enjoy the view.

We're on the Sun in December so I've been gathering info as well. Here's the link for the press release way back in 2011 :p Seems so long ago but only 3.5 years.

Just a FYI... There is no longer a Pacific Heights restaurant on the SUN. It has been changed to Moderno's restaurant. It is awesome. Especially if you like meat. Also, the buffet that is with dinner if out of this world. During the day they do offer a lunch buffet with deli items. Also, pizza and a few other things. If I remember correctly you can also get breakfast there where they make fresh waffles & made to order omelets. YUM. Now I am making myself hungry. LOL

Love the SUN. My favorite ship. We have been on her 5 times with number 6 coming in January. Can't wait. We prefer the smaller ships. When on vacation I prefer to be able to relax which I can do on the SUN. Comfortably.

Enjoy your cruise.

I am sure most of what I am going to say you already know, but I will give you my take on the Sun. First of all, I have cruised her 3 times, it is one of my 2 favorite ships. If you had fun on the Paradise I am sure you will love the Sun.

dress up: only if you really want to and be prepared, most peopled do not, but some will bring a nice after 5 dress and the guys might want to wear a sports jacket one night, especially if you want pictures taken.

There is 24 hour room service, but the food is pretty bad. We are not huge room service people anyway, but we did use it once on the Sun; never again. For late night snacks I would recommend the sports bar. It is also a fun hangout place.

I would recommend you eat one dinner, at least in a specialty dining room; either Le Bistro or Modernos would be my choices.

We really enjoyed the casino, the best of any ship we have sailed. The entertainment in the showroom and other places is top of the line.

I would also recommend a snorkeling trip in Roatan and if you like adventure try cave tubing in Belize.

All in all, you should have a great cruise, a good time of the year to be cruising and you will probably find the service on NCL better than Carnival, but I am a true NCL loyalist so other might disagree.

At lunch time there was a free Pasta Station in the Pacific Heights restaurant. The PH restaurant is located on the port side opposite the Garden Café on the starboard side. It was much easier to get pasta the first few days of the cruise before others discovered this little gem of a lunch. ;)

I guess it has been a long time since you sailed the Sun. Pacific Heights is long gone. Now it is Madornos, but they do still have the lunch buffet, which was a well kept secret.

With this I disagree, especially since the last time you sailed on Carnival was 1998. I find the service quite a bit better on Carnival in the MDR and about the same as NCL elsewhere. I am loyal to no one so I don't look at cruise lines through rose colored glasses.

yes, we have a roll call for nov 9, but, seems mostly experienced cruisers and not much talk about the ship ... we made all of are shore excursions, just got done a few days ago actually, now we are trying to find out about the ship, we looked on beyondships . com, but, the stuff we learn from people who will share

their experiences is priceless ..............:)

You have more done than me . I am still trying to narrow down where we want to go in each place (well, I have 2 places picked, just not booked yet). LOL

Subscribing to this thread because...we'll I want more info too. :D

I absolutely agree. I spent most of our time out there on the Spirit too. We loved that area.

We enjoyed the Sun this past Feb and we are on the Sun for 2015.

Modernos breakfast and lunch are free. Great place for breakfast and not crowded. Looking forward to having lunch there in 2015.

Loved the welcome back on board party at each port stop. Fresh warm towels to freshen up. You can also trade your dirty beach towel for a clean one here. Juice cookies snacks and ice cream were available. Music and friendly staff to greet you after your port day.

Counting the days till we are on the Sun again.

Brenda

Hate to be a party pooper, but the Sun was an awful ship when I was on it last January. Oldest ship in NCL's fleet and it shows.

I expect an older ship, but what are you comparing it with? If you are comparing the Getaway to the Sun, of course, it looks like a little beat up, without some of the perks the other ships have. Funny, because for the most part people love her.

Actually, I hate to burst your bubble but, the Sun is not the old lady of the NCL fleet.

The Spirit launched in 1998 is the eldest. The Star and Sun were launched together in Miami in 2001.

Cheers. maybe I should say 3 cheers for the Sun, ;)
