sail7seas Posted October 1, 2016 #4376 Share Posted October 1, 2016 (edited) Wow, I agree with previous posters, nothing will make these anti smokers happy except banning smoking 100%. <snip> That is totally untrue. Have you actually read this thread? The majority of non-smokers have advocated (as I did, very early on) for a comfortable, ventilated indoor space for smokers, in addition to the outdoor permitted spaces for smoking, but not balconies. Hey, Liz,,,,,,,,,,, why not read the thread and see posts where some advocated for spots people could smoke and not bother anynone.? Maybe that would interest you? B efore being critical, it might be good to be correct???????????? Edited October 1, 2016 by sail7seas
OVgirl Posted October 1, 2016 #4377 Share Posted October 1, 2016 (edited) Looks like all the smokers can now leave this thread and head up to the Seaview Bar and have a smoke. Guess who'll be left arguing about the last indoor smoking spot?:D:D:D Edited October 1, 2016 by OVgirl
kennicott Posted October 1, 2016 #4378 Share Posted October 1, 2016 Anyone know how to stop following a particular CC thread (ie, this one)? You folks on both sides of the discussion have been great and I'm glad HAL has eliminated smoking on balconies. However, it's time to move on and start following other more important threads without having a ton of messages associated with this thread being sent to my email account. I agree. This thread will die out in short order I predict, after everyone has vented their remaining animosities that is. I've always said on this thread, that the only problem we had with HAL is that we didn't want to get stuck with a cigar smoker on the adjacent balcony since we normally take long cruises. I have followed it just in case HAL should change their mind(s). I wasn't optimistic, so yesterday's news came as a great surprise. Sure like to be a "bug on the wall" and learn the background on Stein Kruse's rationale in making the decision. But, as promised, I got in touch with them and current brochures, etc. are on the way. Now, if they wouldn't be so miserly with their internet benefits for Four Star Mariners---(Just Kidding).

If you re read the posts, you will see that Lizzie was advocating for an indoor space for smokers. The discussion has never been limited to balcony smoking although it seemed to be the number one complaint. This is interesting as I know you like Oceania. When I sailed her, they had an inside smoking space as well as a nice protected outside smoking space. Not sure what else was a smoking area, but they certainly seemed to take care of smokers. HaL can do the same thing and everyone will be happy (I hope).
Snooksi Posted October 1, 2016 #4386 Share Posted October 1, 2016 (edited) ALL fires make the news? I'm really putting myself out there by stating this tidbit without any facts to back up my statement, but I will venture to guess there is a law somewhere that states that any/all fires on a cruise ship must be reported. Whether it be for safety purposes (big one) or merely statistics, I doubt a ship would ever get away with refusing to report a fire The website I shared listed every fire on a cruise ship since 1979. This was not a "news" site. In this day of technology (cell phone cameras), the internet and cruise bulletin boards, do you honestly believe a fire could possibly occur on a ship's balcony without it being reported in the media, on the internet or even a cruise site thread? Surely, some non-smoker somewhere would spread the news within minutes. With the prevalence of Norovirus on so many cruise ships, why aren't some of you people jumping on your soap boxes and demanding mandatory handwashing on all cruise ships? Yes, some people actually need rules and laws to figure out they are supposed to do something which is just common sense to most other people. Otherwise, Norovirus wouldn't ever be a problem on any ship. I will bet Norovirus has affected more people on cruise ships than the occasional whiff of a cigarette on someone's balcony. I wonder how much a cruise ship hand inspector would make a year? New jobs!! Edited October 1, 2016 by Snooksi
RuthC Posted October 2, 2016 #4387 Share Posted October 2, 2016 Actually, the simplest method is to just not open the thread to read more posts. Bypass it. If you have your subscription set for daily (possibly also for weekly; I'm not sure how that setting works) e-mail notifications, though, those will keep coming, and clog up the ol' "in" box. Easier to just switch to "no notifications", or unsubscribe entirely. Then don't open the thread again. ;)

lakemurraykid Posted October 2, 2016 #4390 Share Posted October 2, 2016 We haven't cruised with HAL in about six years, so I may be behind the times. I have read the new smoking rules and have no problem with them. But I do have one question. If smoking is allowed in the casinos, why not on Ms. Oosterdam and Ms. Eurodam. Do you know if there is a specific reason for that?

In reading the policy I was a little unclear about the casino on the Eurodam, so if someone can clarify that for me I would appreciate it. :)

If smoking is allowed in the casinos, why not on Ms. Oosterdam and Ms. Eurodam. Do you know if there is a specific reason for that? There is no smoking allowed at all in the Casino on those two ships because they have been reconstructed in that area. The Sports Bar, Piano Lounge, and Northern Lights have all been opened up to make one huge area with the Casino in the center. Smoke would carry over too large an area, so it was banned there entirely.

Seems a bit strange. Am I missing something? Probably not, Roy. That is, as to the "BEGIN" part. I suspect it's just a poorly worded aspect of the announcement, without consideration of the existing casino smoking policy on the Noordam. After all, the Noordam has a separate, enclosed, smoking room which is not far from the Casino (think vertically, not horizontally). There's no need to introduce smoking in the Casino on that ship when it's a quick get-away for a ciggy.
