No self laundry services on Celebrity Solstice

I totally agree, on a vacation i don't want to mess with laundry....and I budget for such things...I just want to relax....enjoy myself and let others do the work for a change:cool:

 

The day that I start doing chores on a vacation is the same day that I start drinking myself into a stupor every day. I go on vacation to relax and enjoy myself, not to do mundane chores that I can't avoid at home. I don't understand the desire, nor the willingness, to do laundry on a vacation when for an extra $50 or so a person can have someone NOT on vacation do it for them.

 

Why the resistance to spending what amounts to a measly 1% of the total vacation costs on laundry services? That's a pretty inexpensive way to minimize the interruptions to a vacation.

 

Thank heaven my wonderful husband understands fully and insists that we relax and let other's do the work for us.

Elite gets one free bag of laundry per person --- Elite+ is 2 bags and Zenith is unlimited.

 

Even for two weeks, we do fine with two bags, we're Elite+ now and have a 10 day coming up. I doubt we'll use even one bag.

 

Sometimes it's worth it to pay for an extra bag on the airline and pack enough so it isn't a concern.

I admire those folks who pack in one carry on for a two week cruise. I hate schlepping luggage around.

Paying for an extra bag round trip will often cost from $75 to $100. A couple could get quite a bit of laundry done for that same cost.

First, for those who do one week vacations one week a year, I can sympathize with not wanting to do laundry (really, in one week how much do you need?)

 

If you travel more extensively, though, as we do (often 50-70 day trips, land combined with 1 to 3 cruises) an onboard laundry is a huge advantage. But then our approach to traveling is a bit different than most: We do not eat more on a cruise, drink more on a cruise, exercise less on a cruise than we do in our home lives. So doing laundry once every 10 days or so really is just not a big deal. We truly do not have to jam pack every minute of every day with eating, drinking or some activity.

 

And, gotta love the "Celebrity is too luxurious for self service laundries."

That one is a real laugher since virtually ALL the real luxury lines, including RCCL's own Azamara, have onboard laundries.

 

And for the "someone told me that Princess' laundry rooms are noisy all night long", the Princess ships we've been on (and there have been a good many) the laundry room was closed and locked between 10 PM and 8 AM. Never once heard a passenger complain about noise.

 

Truly, different strokes...."your way" may be better for you and that is understandable and fine, but truly, that does not mean it is for everyone.

 

We understand that Celebrity never has and never will have self service laundries and have no problem with that, but the underlying snobbiness of some of the posts here is why people (including us 20+ Celebrity cruises ago) thought "wow, what a snobby cruise line." Thankfully, the onboard experience is radically different from the approach of some on here.

We also take long extended vacations and having a place to iron a few things or do a load of laundry is very helpful. It would be more than a few dollars for us to catch up on laundry during the cruise portion of our vacation which is sandwiched between to land tours with no opportunity to do laundry.

 

On my HAL cruise in Europe, then charged me $7.00 a day for an 11 day cruise which was $77 total for unlimited laundry service for our cabin. I really wish Celebrity had something similiar, it would help. Not everyone is elite and gets the laundry coupons.

As far as the luxury lines go, I remember laundry room sessions on Royal Viking Line in the 1980s (mostly quite long cruises including annual Around the World) with some very elegant older ladies who had the means to buy the entire company without batting an eye. One told me she loved going there to get all the best ship gossip.

I was recently on a Princess cruise and one of the couple's we sat with in the MDR cabin was located near the laundry. They said it was in use all hours of the night which they could hear.

 

The self service laundry's on Princess are shut down and locked at 10 pm and unlocked in the morning at 8am.

We sail Cunard and Celebrity and overall we prefer Celebrity, but I do wish they would let me do my own laundry the way I like it. We only send underwear and T-shirts to the laundry, because everything seems to be put in a hot wash, so we have any other items dry cleaned. The actual cleaning is fine - but the pressing ......!!.:eek: They don't seem to have facilities for hand finishing and just flatten all the garments in the kind of press you would use for sheets, so my casual jackets, summer shirts, etc come with a crease down the sleeves and down the sides. I requested no crease in my linen trousers, (which is never a problem for my local dry cleaners) but they were returned with a crease. I sent them back again and they were returned with a crease, but this time down the side seams!!! It wasn't a good look.:eek:

 

I can see the point of view of folks who don't want to do laundry on a cruise, but no-one is suggesting it should be made compulsory to use a self-service laundry, just that it would be nice to have the option. I don't want to spend time on my cruise playing the slot machines at the casino - I can't imagine anything more boring - but I would never suggest there is therefore no need to have the machines on the ship for those who do enjoy playing them.

 

Celebrity has never had laundry rooms on their ships, but many changes have taken place in the company during the last few years and, with two new ships in the pipeline, perhaps this is another tradition that is due for a change.:);)

If you don't like doing your own laundry that's great because every ship has a laundry service and if there is a self-service laundry you don't have to use it.

 

However, having one on board gives you an extra option as to how you get your clothes clean.

Not sure if if everyone knows this already but there are no laundry rooms on the Solstice. Make sure you have enough pieces of clothing or you will have to use the ships's service.

 

If you want self service laundry, sail Princess. You can use laundry service and many passengers get free or discounted laundry service.

You know, I know nothing about your sailing history but I would bet that I have spent a whole lot more time on Celebrity ships than you have. And probably have lots more booked. Please reread my posts, I think you need a refresher course.

On our summit cruise last month we sent 7 shirts and some socks to laundry with our elite coupon. We got the socks, 5 shirts and a pair of shorts back. We called and told them problem. They came and retrieved the shorts that weren't ours and we were able to describe shirts in detail. They did find one of the shirts (a t-shirt) , but never found the Columbia long sleeve sun shirt. We'll we r out $100 and they promised to "look into it". I will watch the mail!!

 

Our butler said they tried to find it, but ,"there is a lot of laundry being done because of the free coupons" that they try their best!!

We had a situation where the laundry spilled something (I think it was fabric softener) on one of my shirts. Of course, the drying process set the stain in. After several unsuccessful attempts by them to get the big green blotches out of my shirt, we asked for a claim/damage form. They sent us one, but in the meantime they tried something that did remove the stains -- so, I don't have first-hand knowledge of how that compensation process would have worked.

I wouldn't hold your breath on compensation.

 

I'm pretty sure that the laundry forms contain a clause something like "in the event of loss/damage to any items the extent of our liability shall be to the cost of laundering/cleaning the items". By submitting your laundry, you agree to their terms.

 

As an aside; I would never, ever, send anything on the wash/dry/fold coupons which I am not prepared to lose/have spoiled - seen too many shrunken tee shirts, socks etc.

 

The individual listed items are a different story, we have never had a problem and we do use the ships laundry a fair bit to save on weight and number of cases.

As a plus size lady, I would LOVE self serve laundry facilities. I wouldn't ever dream of sending clothes to wash in machines that use hot water and hot air - what if they shrink my clothes? I would have a very stressful time if I had to look for clothes while on vacation, as plus sizes stores are definitely NOT ubiquitous. Couple that with the fact my clothes are larger and my luggage space is used up with fewer articles of clothing than a much smaller person.

So people can tell me they don't want the headache of self serve laundry, and can't imagine why I would, but I'd much rather run to do a load than deal with not being able to find replacement clothing in my size. The latter would be far more of a headache.

And they don't even have to put a launderette on the cabin decks. I'd be fine with them on the medical deck if it was close to the elevator.
