No self laundry services on Celebrity Solstice

I baffled that a thread on self-serve laundry could cause so much controversy.

Not everybody spends hours 'studying' for their vacation. I believe the OP was just sharing something he thought others might want to know.

I'm not sure why some hate doing laundry so much. It's not like they have to scrub it on the rocks in a river, the machines do all the work.

Personally, if Celebrity had them, I'd likely do one load during a cruise. Since they don't, I will not however be sending stuff out. I'm very picky and wouldn't want to take the risk of something getting lost, shrunk or with creases in the wrong places as others have posted.

It has nothing to do with money!

You can wish for them, hope for them, ask for them, discuss them but its all a waste of time and bandwidth. Celebrity ships don't have them, and its a safe bet to say that they never will

Except that when Azamara first grabbed their 2 R class ships, they closed the existing on-board laundries. I recall some push back on that and they were very quickly re-opened.

But no, you are right, they will never be on existing Celebrity ships. But there are 2 new ones online (albeit 4 and 6 years away), and they will incorporate, in market-speak, a "small ship experience". So, maybe in keeping with their luxury brother line, they might incorporate them.

Honestly, it doesn't matter much to me personally because our laundry is free, but there are people who would appreciate them for numerous reasons (a number of which have posted on this thread). I simply do NOT understand why it is so contentious with some.

I agree that they will never be a part of Celebrity or Royal Caribbean. It's really not a deal breaker for me on a 7 day cruise. However, when the time comes that I am able to take a 14 day cruise or longer Princess will be my first consideration.

I know I need to seek psychiatric help because I have developed a phobia about other people doing my laundry. It started out on my first Carnival Cruise when they shrunk my tee shirts. You know how cotton shrinks it becomes short and wide. I was left with belly shirts and I'm not tall either. Then I decided to have the laundromat wash my cloths. They lost all my wash. What a nightmare that was. That was back in the day when I was single and could afford nice clothes. I had to dig up old Macy's and Lord and Taylor charge statements to prove what I owned. It took months to get reimbursed. Then I got married and my wife who was 22 at the time left a lipstick in her pocket. Of course only my shirts were ruined when the lipstick melted in the dryer. I think she planned it because I have been doing the laundry for almost 25 years now. Even if I make it to the free laundry level I will not send anything out.

Great story. I now know that I did not gain weight on that TA cruise we just returned from. It was X that shrunk my pants.;)

FWIW, I don't see the contentious debate that some other posters see. Just people relating why they like a laundry or do not care for it. The general them of each side seems to be either I like control of my laundry(mostly a quality issue) or I hate doing laundry on a vacation.

We don't care to do laundry, but a laundry or two on the ship would be welcomed by many. I hope X considers including them on their new ships.

Ha, your DW and I are on the same page. My DW has been convinced for nearly 34 years that I would ruin our clothes if I did laundry. Something we can agree on.:D

It's not the fact of whether there is self service laundry or not that is controversial. It's the constant whining by those who want them and are annoyed that there aren't. The subject comes up at least once or twice a month, often with comments like "Princess has them" (as if that alone makes one cruise line better than another) or blaming "the bean counters" (a cliched villain at best). Why chose a cruise line that doesn't have something they must have and then come here and complain about it. If they want to complain, they should be complaining about their poor decision making for booking a cruise that doesn't have something they have such strong feelings about.

We sail Cunard and Celebrity and overall we prefer Celebrity, but I do wish they would let me do my own laundry the way I like it. We only send underwear and T-shirts to the laundry, because everything seems to be put in a hot wash, so we have any other items dry cleaned. The actual cleaning is fine - but the pressing ......!!. They don't seem to have facilities for hand finishing and just flatten all the garments in the kind of press you would use for sheets, so my casual jackets, summer shirts, etc come with a crease down the sleeves and down the sides.

This used to bother us too -- until we learned to write in the space on the right side of the laundry form

DO NOT MACHINE PRESS

WASH AND TUMBLE DRY ONLY

Then draw an arrow to the items you don't want machine pressed.

When the items come back folded, if anything still needs to be ironed, we than send it out to be ironed and the creases come back just fine in the right places.

But most items come back folded just fine and need no ironing at all.

For jackets, etc. we use their dry cleaning service, which is very good.

When you figure how much money you are already paying for each hour of your cruise, the price that people are paying to spend their time doing chores like laundry themselves on Princess ships is really much higher than merely what it is costing them for that washer and dryer.

We decided long ago only to bring along clothing on cruises that we are willing to send out to be washed or dry cleaned.

This way we are able to relax and enjoy the cruise without needing to waste any time doing laundry or being concerned about it.

Yet many that complain and whine, keep sailing with Celebrity, because the overall product, for the dollar spent, is better than what is given by the other cruise lines.

If they enjoy the product so much, why all the complaining and whining?

What I dislike about some of the posts is the apparent vitriol in their comments,. As a laundry user, where available, I appreciate that others may prefer not to use them, but I do not condemn them in the way they do laundry lovers.

Equally I do not rate the lack of laundromats on Celebrity as a deal breaker, but for longer cruises they are helpful to us, and I would be very happy for Celebrity to re-visit this issue during the planning of their new ships.

Laundry

On a cruise - WHO does this?

memories of "The Steamie" on a P&O ship :p

Honestly - if you can afford a cruise you can afford to send your clothes to the ships laundry to be washed/pressed/steamed/drycleaned..

I always always always have ALL of my clothes laundered again before coming home - straight into the wardrobe from the suitcase

Life is too short to spend it in the Steamie on a cruise ship!

Ah. the patented Celebrity "if you don't like it, sail another line."

Talk about hackneyed.

Not sure your reference is to my post, but in my post I gave the OP a solution to their desire. Princess has self service laundry. I did not say 'if you don't like it, move on'. I pointed them to a solution which is much more than most comments as I do not see Celebrity installing self service laundries as a solution to the comment/inquiry of the OP. Maybe I am wrong on that account. :)

I have sailed Princess 4-5 times and have used self service laundry and liked it.

Well said. For those of us who would find a laundry useful - it would be nice if there was one. We like many others, manage fine without, and it isn't a deal breaker in any way shape or form. Not sure why many who wouldn't want to use one, have to be so vehement in their objection.

Last cruise and first time with a Butler, such a nice man and so eager to please - and of course we tipped well as we went along. One day upon return from a port we found that he had "surprised" us with having all our laundry comped as we are not Elite.

I had a storage cube next to my pop up hamper and he took that also. It was the storage for every bra except the one I was wearing  My planned cocktail dress for the night did not get worn as I didn't have the proper under garment.

My clothes that never go through a dryer came back shrunk, whites a deep gray and numerous bras of every color where put into a hot dryer and ruined. THAT IS WHY I would LOVE self serve laundry. Next cruise the Butler will be told not to touch our clothes.

We are not wealthy people but I kept quiet about the damages - which would have been substantial - I didn't have the heart to hurt our Butler by reporting it when he was trying to be so kind. We laugh about our "laundry heist" now.

What I cannot understand is - if you don't wish to do your own laundry onboard, why do you care if I do. There are plenty of ways they can place a laundry that would have no impact on fellow cruisers. Live and let live.

It sounds like they have college students loading the machines. I cringe every time kids do wash. They overload the machine and anything and everything go in at one time.

I'm not sure that is a fair assessment, a suitcase full of laundry can end up costing a pretty penny. Even more acute if you have kids with you.

Self-service laundry is nice, maybe just throw in a load of fruities and socks so you don't need 14 pairs of socks. We are loyal Princess cruisers and the occasional load of laundry has come in handy.

This ^^ exactly! DH loves having a laundry room but it's not a deal breaker. And as someone pointed out, it's not just Princess, a lot of luxury lines have them too so the Celebrity passengers are too good for a laundry room is hogwash.

For over 20 years Royal and Celebrity have been designing/building ships without self service laundries. Azamara bought a couple of ships from the defunct Renaissance line. They were not built for the company.

Why people keep on harping about something the companies have avoided for two decades is beyond comprehension.

If a self service laundry is the most critical point in picking your cruise line you will never find it with Royal or Celebrity.

Yup! A wish upon a star has a better chance of coming to pass than finding a washer n dryer on RCCL or Celebrity.

To see part of the reason Celebrity has not seen the need for laundry rooms and Princess does is take a look at the length of cruises both company offers. Celebrity offer relatively few longer than 16 days, and nothing longer than 19 that is not a cruise tour or cruise/river tour combination. Princess on the other hand has a number of cruises longer than 20 days, with a number in the thirty and forty day range (not even counting the world cruise at over 100 days). Hard to fit clothes for that long into a suitcase or two. At one time or another during the year every Princess ship has a cruise over 20 days.

Very well said. Some of us take a cruise that lasts for more than seven days. Some of us extend our cruise vacation several days on land both before and after the cruise. Some of us have clothes that do get dirty. Some of us do not want to pay in excess of $50 to have clothes laundered that we could do ourselves for about $5. I have found some of the comments quite snarky. Please don't tell me how to spend my time and money and I won't tell you how to spend yours. I do not go to the bars to drink nor do I play the casino, but I have no objection to those who do so. Please respect the fact that some of us would indeed use a self-serve laundry.
