Pros to staying on Cruise ship when in Port?

Recommended Posts

DH and I are considering staying on the cruise ship when we're in Nassau next month. We've been to Nassau before and to be honest, it isn't one of our favorite ports. We've never just stayed on the cruise ship before.

Has anyone chosen to stay on the cruise ship when in port?

We never have but are also thinking about it for Belize. Maybe just go to port and get some chocolate for the Grandkids. Have a drink at Wet Lizard and get back on the ship. Everyone always says how great it is to have the ship mostly to yourself.

We enjoy staying on and having the ship to ourselves. The shops and casino will be closed, but the crowds will be gone. Try it, I think you will be surprised. There are always people that stay on, you will not be alone.

It's actually quite nice. Mostly everyone is on the island so you get the ship to yourselves. It's nice to go around and take pictures of the ship when no one is present. No chair hogs!! No lines to stand in!! The spa will run specials while in port to get customers.

I've actually never tried the spa. Might be the perfect opportunity to do so ;)

Last month on the Magic my 4 year old and I stayed on the ship in Progreso and it was seriously my favorite day on the cruise. In the morning I took him to Camp Carnival so I could have a little me time on the Serenity deck (no one else there), picked my son up about 11 for lunch (no lines for pizza) and then spent about 4 hours at Waterworks where we were able to go up and down slides with no lines. Great day! I hope you enjoy your day as much as we did :)

I used to never do this (staying on the ship in port), but I am beginning to do it.

As time goes on, and I have been to many ports before, I do find myself spending some nice quiet time on board the ship at certain ports. It is not because I dont like the ports, but just that I have been there so many times before that there is nothing really new to explore.

I usually do get off for a brief time, to pick up some items that I may be wanting to buy, but then get back on quickly and I enjoy the quietness of the ship.

Serenity areas are really serene with lots of chairs and sunbeds. Lido buffet area, no lines. I actually went to the laundry room for the first time and did some laundry last cruise, since I packed "light" for a change. Mostly though the nice thing about staying on board is the quietness and you have your pick of chairs on deck:)

In Nassau many don't get off the ship!

We had our last port stop of a 7&7 B2B in Nassau from Noon 'til 7 PM in January.

Way over half of the passengers did NOT get off the ship at all.

We didn't. January isn't our favorite time of year for a port stop in Nassau and we don't care for Nassau anyway.

We've never stayed on the ship in any port. However, we usually just go off the ship for a short period of time and then get back on and have a very relaxing lunch and find a nice recliner and take a nap.

We've been to most of the ports several times so are not interested in shore excursions.

We have stayed on the ship when it is in port (Nassau, Cozumel, Grand Cayman) as we have been there a few times and have done the excursions we wanted to do before, and we're not into shopping (except for the first time at a port, for souvenirs) so staying on board and enjoying a much less crowded ship is wonderful. :)

I stay on the ship frequently when I cruise. It is the best time to enjoy the ship.

Pros to staying on the ship in port:

1. My Cheers package can continue to be used where it can't be used off the ship

2. No crowds on Lido

3. No trouble finding a good lounge chair

4. It's quiet

5. You will likely have the hot tub to yourself

6. In Grand Turk, the casino remains open when the ship is docked and its not crowded and smoky

7. Its a great time to meet some seasoned cruisers because frequent cruisers are more likely to stay on the ship in port

8. The spa runs port day specials and its easier to get an appointment

Hope you get to enjoy your port day on the ship.

We have done half days in port before but have never skipped one completely.

On our Vista cruise, we will skip Jamaica. I really have no desire.

We do love to come back early after a busy morning and early afternoon in port. There's no lines for lunch and the pool isn't busy either. It's so peaceful. We can get plenty of swimming time in before going back to our balcony to watch sail away and get ready for dinner.

Another who utilizes the spa. There are great port day specials like 3 services (scrub, express facial, massage) for $80-$100. Serenity is empty, can always grab a great chair/spot. Also a good time to get photos around the ship, if that's your thing.
