What else dies RCI not have.

Recommended Posts

I'm a bit saddened. I had planned to jump the Disney Ship and swim to RCI. But after doing little homework so far I see that

1. They do not offer a place to iron of do laundry.

2. They do not allow you to bring bottles of water or soda.

3. You can only bring one bottle of wine per person.

4. And it seems getting anything to drink even a coke might cost be a bit for the 2 week cruise j was sinning on doing.

ANYThiNG. else I CANT do on RCI? Ugh.

...3. You can only bring one bottle of wine per person.....

You can bring two bottles of wine per stateroom, regardless of the number of people in the stateroom.

You cannot buy a bottle of hard liquor and consume it on board.

Huh??

Most people have no problem bringing on water and soda even though it's technically not allowed.

In general, RCI is significantly less expensive than Disney, so it makes sense that there are some differences in what's included. You are correct with No. 1 that there is no self-serve laundry. They do offer laundry, dry-cleaning and pressing services, for prices that are not too different from similar services on land, but it can add up, if you have need to have a lot done.

People bring on water and soda all the time, so if that's important to you, it's probably not an issue. If coke or other sodas are a big part of what you drink, you can get an unlimited soda package for a few dollars per day.

Now...about the sinning you were going to be doing on the cruise...I'd like to hear more about that. ;)

(Unfortunately, I have not been on a Disney Cruise, so I can't comment much on what's on there that is missing on RC. But most of what you've mentioned so far are just things that factor into the cost analysis, rather than being things you "can't do.")

Other than soft drinks and laundry services (which aren't really free unless you also schlep your own detergent onto the ship), everything that's free on Disney is also free on RCL, and everything that costs extra on RCL also costs extra on Disney.

True, Disney allows you to bring more alcohol on board, but they factor the resulting drop in bar revenue into the cost of the cruise. The soft drinks are "free" but the costs have also been factored into the cruise price (Disney used to charge for soft drinks, but changed years ago and integrated the costs into the base fares). Disney doesn't have a casino, but the revenue that casino's generate for cruise ships has also been factored into the cruise cost.

So even if you don't drink or gamble, and don't like soft drinks, your jacked up cruise fare helps subsidize Disney's bottom line.

I never noticed? Do hotels have this? I guess I just wait until I am home, and never noticed.

2. They do not allow you to bring bottles of water or soda.

In limited quantities, they overlook, but look at the bright side, you can buy a package and still save a thousand dollars on your cruise fare for this change.

3. You can only bring one bottle of wine per person.

The cruise is much cheaper than Disney, and therefore, RCCL relies on additional revenue streams that Disney does not, for example, drinks and gambling.

4. And it seems getting anything to drink even a coke might cost be a bit for the 2 week cruise j was sinning on doing.

Just a soda package is $6.50 a day for unlimited. Disney gives it to you free, but they charge you two arms and a leg for that in your fare.

All cruises lines are not made equal. They each have a product, and how they sell that product is different. I like to gamble. Disney does not offer that. It's just the way it is.

Ye pays yer money and ye takes yer cherce. We personally don't believe that the Disney experience is worth the substantial additional cost, while others won't sail any other cruise line ... ain't it nice to have options.

2. They do not allow you to bring bottles of water or soda. techncially correct. usually not enforced except certain spring break itineraries.

4. And it seems getting anything to drink even a coke might cost be a bit for the 2 week cruise j was sinning on doing. drink packages are pretty reasonable if you drink a lot during the day. the replenish package( no alcohol) covers soda, juices and other options.

you are paying for the 'free' soda in your Disney base fare. you also pay for the ambience, and the name.

for the price of Navigator's balcony on Magic, I can get a Grand Suite on most Royal Ships which come with free cocktail hour every night in the concierge lounge( free beer, wine, mixed drinks and soda) a free pressing of one item on formal nite( usually DH's Uniform shirt) and other small perks.

I will be honest I HATED the rotational dining concept on Disney. HATED IT. it seems to me that the restaurant I was forced to go was the one restaurant that I wanted to eat NOTHING on the menu. I also found that what I did order I never finished. I literally never ate dessert the entire week because nothing either appealed to me or if I did get somethingI was vastly disappointed in.

It was so bad that I begged to get get additional ressies at Palo. I was refused after one dinner and one Brunch. even after paying huge premium, I still was that willing to spend even MORE on food that i actually wanted to eat. and they said NO.

Oh and the attitude of the dining staff really turned me off. I got rolling eyes every night and unlike Royal NEVER ONCE did anyone offer to custom make a dish for me or provide an alternative meal once they saw I wasn't eating.

it would take a LOT for me to return to Disney. but at last I tried it before summarily thumbing my nose at it without giving it a chance,

This is exactly why we eat in Cabana's every night we can when on a Disney ship. Nice casual sit down dinner with friendly waiters, and food cooked to order. 10X the quality and atmosphere of Disney's rotational dining rooms (Think MTD in shorts and sandals :) ). We also do two nights in Palo. (The trick is to pre-book before you board as a single diner, and then go back in and have your spouse pre-book for a different night as a single.) :)

OP...Most (not all) of the RCCL ships do not have stupid cartoon creatures running around on their ships. Bonus!

And even the ones that do aren't in your face every time you turn around - double bonus :D

Never had them "in my face every time I turn around" on Disney. They are at designated places at designated times. Obviously they have to get there, but it is a very direct route. And they can be easily avoided.

Cabins not ready at embarkation

Never were and never would be, unless they hold up embarkation long enough to clean and prepare every room. I'd rather they let us go ahead and board. Does Disney delay boarding until all rooms are ready?

Wine sommeliers gone

True. I love wine, though, and I don't miss the sommeliers, because the ones I encountered were more like salespeople trying to push the wine than sommeliers. But there could have been some good ones. Does Disney have sommeliers?

Midnight buffet gone

I miss those, but I don't think they are available on Disney, either.

No lunch in MDR at embarkation or on any port days

Hard to tell if these are things that you miss or wish existed on RCI or if they're things you think are different from Disney.

Royal has a casino :D

Not a big incentive for me. :p It's actually more reason for me to go on Disney (where as a single honestly the prices aren't all that much different) more for me. I'm open to other itineraries on other lines, but honestly as a solo there isn't much difference most of the time price-wise.

OP asked what things don't exist on RCI. I listed a handful of things. I never said you can or can't do them on Disney or any other lines, I'm just stating things you can't do on RCI, per OP's request.

I hope that clears it up for you.

Cabins not ready at embarkation - Same is true on Disney. Cabins weren't available until 1:30

Wine sommeliers gone - Same is true on Disney

Midnight buffet gone - Same is true on Disney

No lunch in MDR at embarkation or on any port days - Same is true on Disney

On newer ships access to steam / saunas is no longer complimentary.

On Disney, the dry sauna in the locker room area of the Rainforest Spa is still free, but the steam rooms are for a fee.

On our last Disney cruise (May of this year) Mickey and Goofy invaded the Quiet Cove pool area every afternoon, which made it neither quiet, nor adults-only until they left.:(

Maybe it's just me, but I have no problem with not being able to do laundy. it's vacation!

Me either, but the OP did mention B2B I think. Even so, I have no problem wearing the same shirt/pants to dinner a couple of times. After spending a few grand for 2 people, I can spare a couple of bucks to have a shirt pressed for the 2nd or 3rd formal night.

Tell that to the 8 ft gray hippo in a tutu walking the wrong way as I came around the corner on the running track one day on Allure.

Okay. I can join that game. :D

You can't water ski or fish off the back of the ship.

You can't bring your bicycle and ride it around the pool deck.

You can't repaint your cabin.

You can't barbecue on the balcony.

Of course, I managed to read the OP's post in context and understand that they would talking about things they were used to being able to do on Disney, but could not do on RC.
