Regal dead in the water

Regal Princess---Currently dead in the water off the west coast of Scotland.

We are on the Regal. Captain announced that both propulsion motors have tripped for an unexplained reason. They are currently assessing the situation. So much for redundancy.

Stay tuned.

We were supposed to be on this cruise so have been watching the Royal's webcam and travelling with you that way. Did begin to wonder why the scenery hasn't changed.

Wishing everyone on board all the best and hope the the problem is soon fixed and the rest of your voyage is problem free.

Sandy :)

Well, I was wrong on my previous post, we were not gaining headway. The captain was using the bow and stern thrusters to position the ship favorably to the ocean swell. However, in just the last few minutes we have began to move ahead at 11 knots.

At this time we are operating only with the starboard propulsion motor and propeller. The crew is working to determine if they can get the port motor going. If so we will have to stop again while they restart that one, or so the captain says.

We are headed for Glasgow Scotland, but obviously we are going to be late porting there even if they get things under control. So the days events, like shore excursions, are up in the air at this time. It is 10:20 PM here now and the captain says he won't make another announcement until 7:00 AM.

At least this won't turn out like the Carnival Cruise Line infamous "poop cruise" when the Carnival Triumph lost all power out in the Gulf of Mexico, for days, a few years back.

A quick look at speeds she has been making shows that she was making a steady 17.5 knots before she lost power and it is probably reasonable to assume that this was the speed she needed to maintain to arrive on time .

She was then disabled for around two hours suggesting she would have lost around 35nm to her schedule whilst disabled and then ran at roughly 13 knots for a further two hours whilst they (presumably) got the second propulsion unit back in service losing her another 8nm.

So, she will have lost roughly 43nm against her planned 17.5 knot schedule.

Since 21.30 UT (22.30 local time) she has been running at around 21.5 knots suggesting she is recovering lost distance against schedule at roughly 4nm per hour, implying that she is likely to have recovered over 30nm by the time she was planned to reduce speed for her arrival.

So, the bottom line is that based on the current evidence she will probably be docking no more than 45 minutes later than originally scheduled and with little or no consequential impact of tours etc.

I'm impressed. Thank you for taking the time to mathematically detail this event.

Nice math work there. It will be interesting to see if the OP posts in the morning and find out how close your estimate was.
