floridalover5623 Posted April 30, 2016 #2 Share Posted April 30, 2016 Don't see why not since I recall they'll take a personal check as well.
cb at sea Posted April 30, 2016 #3 Share Posted April 30, 2016 Do you mean Traveler's Checks? If so, they do. Personal checks are limited...usually $200 per cruise. Doesn't have to be a "cashiers check", which you have to have written from your BANK.

Putterdude Posted April 30, 2016 #6 Share Posted April 30, 2016 We are still able to purchase TCs commission free and always have $1000 USD worth as a security blanket. Yes, the PSD on Princess ships will cash them.

Whimsy Posted April 30, 2016 Author #8 Share Posted April 30, 2016 (edited) We are able to still get them through the credit union. Thank you for the responses. Good to know! Edited April 30, 2016 by Whimsy
Elitein85days Posted April 30, 2016 #9 Share Posted April 30, 2016 Oh dear, it was a late night moment. Yes, I meant TRAVELERS., not cashiers. Why wouldn't you use a credit card? Much easier and safer for you.
beg3yrs Posted April 30, 2016 #10 Share Posted April 30, 2016 Why wouldn't you use a credit card? Much easier and safer for you. It might be easier and safer but people have their own private and unique circumstances. I would consider it none of my business to ask why. Perhaps you didn't mean to pry and if that's the case, a suggestion would be more appropriate than a question.

Rare Coral Posted April 30, 2016 #12 Share Posted April 30, 2016 Why wouldn't you use a credit card? Much easier and safer for you. Sometimes one needs cash. Not every place takes credit cards. I don't like bringing a lot of cash on trips and still took travelers checks on my last cruises. I find it safer then bringing cash. I will not get a cash advance on a credit card. Kevin Posted April 30, 2016 #13 Share Posted April 30, 2016 Why wouldn't you use a credit card? Much easier and safer for you. I did not realize they still existed. http://www.businessinsider.com/when-to-use-travelers-checks-2015-7 So basically you use them if you are going somewhere dangerous or where ATM machines don't exist. That makes sense. I don't want to pay ATM fees and still find this useful on cruises. I don't seem to use them elsewhere. Maybe just a habit. wheezedr Posted May 1, 2016 #15 Share Posted May 1, 2016 Be aware that while the ship will cash them, many businesses on shore will not so you would still need local currencies depending on the cruise itinerary. For third world ports I like to bring a wad of ones. They are great for small purchases as well as tips. You can always add a few together. Putterdude Posted May 1, 2016 #17 Share Posted May 1, 2016 Given the level of credit card fraud I think one could argue that TCs are safer then credit cards. They certainly are less convenient and in some cases attract a fee but they do serve a purpose for some people. Yes, fewer places accept them anymore but to get back to the question, will Princess accept them.....yes, they will.

satxdiver Posted May 1, 2016 #20 Share Posted May 1, 2016 If traveling to a country that uses currency other than US dollars, will Princess give foreign currency when you cash a travelers check? They may but will make you pay the very poor exchange rate. The last place you want to exchange USD for say euro's is at the PSD. Traveler's checks are no longer accepted by many merchants because they are so easily stolen or counterfeited. The merchant is then left holding a worthless piece of paper. I imagine using them on the ship, they will look very close at them before giving you the money. Cheapest way to get foreign currency is to use an ATM at a bank in that country. You will get the best exchange rate but watch the ATM fees which generally are lower at a large bank. In short traveler's checks are a relic from the past. Whimsy Posted May 2, 2016 Author #21 Share Posted May 2, 2016 I don't mind sharing why I like them. I don't like to use my credits cards everywhere. I don't like my card taken out of my view such as restaurants on land where the possibility of the numbers being compromised could occur. I don't like to pay ATM fees and if we want to go to the casino I like to have cash, not put it on our account. I have the safety of the travelers checks vs carrying a lot of cash. I know they are hardly used any more, that's why I want to double check. I will not use my cards at merchants set up under the tent in ports. I have seen people do it but I don't feel comfortable. I also like to be prepared to have cash should the need arise. Computers do go down making using a credit card or debit card difficult. Our credit union offers them free based on certain criteria which we meet so I could use them vs the ATM fees. I work hard for my money so I am not interested in paying extra to get some cash. GUT2407 Posted May 2, 2016 #24 Share Posted May 2, 2016 Can I go to the Pursers desk and put cash on my account? Yep, in fact some people only run a cash account, put a certain amount down when they board are then contacted when it's getting low. If I'm using cash I prefer to also put down a card then there's no lining up last day to get a refund.
WupperAV Posted May 2, 2016 #25 Share Posted May 2, 2016 (edited) Quote: MasterCard offers a prepaid card similar to American Express' version, and it is accepted anywhere that MasterCard debit cards are accepted. Like traveler's checks, the prepaid MasterCard has a "zero liability" clause, allowing you to get your money back should the card be lost or stolen. MasterCard requires that you keep your card number on hand, so you can provide that necessary information should something happen to your card. This and other prepaid cards may be a good option for people who are not able to obtain a regular debit card through their bank or do not have a regular financial institution.
