An interesting thing to note is that holes in doughnuts did not occur until someone invented the hand powered dough dispenser. Up until then doughnuts were of they type that most now call a Jam Doughnut, the flattened round ball with a squirt of jam inside. What we call a Jam Doughnut, in Germany is called a "Berliner", which is why the crowd roared in laughter when Jack Kennedy declared during a speech in Berlin, "Ich bin ein Berliner", which translates to "I am a doughnut".

DH had a proper jam doughnut, the round type. Cream doughnuts used to be either round and slit at 45 degrees from the top for the cream and jam, or oblong like the one I had.

I've always enjoyed the pies from the bakery in Beechworth itself but was a bit disappointed in the one in Ballarat. The pie wasn't quite hot enough and the pastry on the base was a bit too thick and therefore hadn't quite cooked enough. The mince and potato topping were nice.

There are bakers and bakers, but the franchises or branches of companies like Beechworth Bakeries should use the same receipes and cooking methods.

Pies are usually a Sunday night easy feed for us. Lobster in Black Bean sauce for tonight, still leaves 2 more Crays in the freezer, We've eaten more Crays in the last few months than we have in the past 6 years.

I got on to a real good gf bakery, selling nice gf goodies... cakes, pies, bread. But it is a 2.5 hour drive from here...Yass Valley Bakery at Yass, half hour from Canberra. Been to Yass many times but never knew about the bakery. I will have to borrow the Meals on Wheels refrigerated van and do a pie and cake run, lol, like load up.

Goulburn to Canberra is 94 klm's and takes about 1 hour. Driving via Yass adds a bit over 50 klm's and about 45 minutes. You will see lots of sheep both ways.🙂

The Barton hwy from Canberra to Yass is the best way

About time that Barton hwy was fully duplicated.

Yass is a nice town, but i spent two years there 70 to 72 on the 🏍 in the 👮‍♀️ I am still frozen from their winters. Icy to the extreme. The Hume Hwy went through Yass back then, truckfest. The Bypass was not opened until 1994.

Yass was the home of my ancestors the Davis's, 3x great grandparents. Both were former convicts. First settlers in the district on a property named "Gounyan".

Several new sub divisions in Yass now, people commute from there into Canberra for work, many public servants of the younger variety. Affordable housing, likewise Bungendore.
