Hurricane irma....ugh

Recommended Posts

We are also on Thursday's cruise to Cuba. Anxiously awaiting any news .

A friend going on the same cruise called Carnival this morning and was told as long as the ship can leave port there will be a cruise. Perhaps not Cuba but a cruise to somewhere and we will be compensated. Personally I'd prefer a refund and reschedule same trip at a later date. Easy for me to say though as I live in Florida and don't have to make travel arrangements other than driving to the port. We booked a room in Tampa for Wednesday night, our plan is to spend most of the day in Tampa Wednesday, we'll be at Hard Rock casino for a few hours at least. One day at a time. Anxiously waiting with you. Finger crossed and prayers galore.

My husband and I, along with our children are to be on the liberty that sails out the 10th. We are to fly in the 9th into Orlando.I've been calling Carnival but unable to reschedule date or even to a port in Cali. I have insurance but they are saying I will need to have it cancelled to get a refund. I was told to fly out and they will decide as it comes to sailing date!! We were so excited, now we are concerned. We have done many cruises, but this is our first with the kids. Does anyone% know how close to sail date they'd cancel? I thought insurance covered you??

To get full refund, minus insurance, it would need to be cancelled or you have a qualifying event. You could cancel for your own reasons and get 75% minus the insurance. That is my understanding.

We are too! I will be disappointed if the cruise is cancelled or taken to another port. I won't be disappointed in Carnival they have to do what is safe for the crew and the passengers, but the only reason we booked this cruise is to go to Cuba. Keeping my fingers crossed. (yn)

Same here, the only reason we booked was to go to Cuba. Really not interested in an alternative plan, not sure I have a choice in the matter.

Just curious, is this Carnival insurance or other travel insurance?

We join the others on this thread who are also scheduled to leave on the Paradise on September 7th to Cuba. We continue to watch the hurricane models, weather forecasts and await word from Carnival.

Welcome to the we're trying not to stress club. I so want to go as planned.

I am probably going to add the insurance to my cruise on the 14th even though it will probably not cover the weather related issues. It's still good to have. However I didn't book my air through them so it doesnt cover that right??

Go thru an independent company like Travelex and add the entire cost of your trip from rental car to flights and cruise.

Insurance through carnival is trop protection and therefore will cover flights as well.

They always refund if they can't go to the port. True even if you booked a private tour.

If they can't go to a port they will refund port fees and taxes PLUS any excursions you paid for through Carnival. Any other compensation is on a cruise by cruise basis- not guaranteed at all. And if they substitute one port for another, you'll likely get nothing except your Carnival excursions.

We leave the 9th from Fort Lauderdale on the Conquest for our first cruise. I am watching this hurricane like a crazy woman. I know I can't change the weather but I did so much research into our ports!!!

I hope she doesn't cause to much distruction or ruin to many vacation plans.

That is why you should never book during hurricane season, people!! If itinerary changes or cancelled cruises don't bother you, than fine, book to your hearts content, but I'd rather book a cruise I'm fairly certain will go where I want it to, baring any unforeseen changed. That is why Dec-May are the best months to book, with January and February (high season for cruising) are the best two months. Yes, you pay more---FOR A REASON!!---ITS NOT HURRICANE SEASON!!

maybe one day when my schedule is more flexible. raising kids, work, running a business makes it hard to get free time in prime season, but thanks for the heads-up.

Well I'm scheduled for the Vista 9/9 and it's not looking to good. I called Carnival this morning and so far they have no change of plans. I'm concerned about flying into Miami and getting stuck there during a hurricane if the cruise is a no go.

BTW, this isn't my first time cruising during September. First time possible impact because of weather.

Welp.. Florida has declared a state of emergency. I can't imagine any cruise liner still saying "that's okay, we're going anyway!" I mean, am I right?! Ugh. I don't foresee them wanting to put thousands of lives at risk when 60+ some counties are in a state of emergency? I need someone's input... not trying to be a Debbie downer, just trying to think realistically...?

I am in Citrus County (west coast, an hour above Tampa) and we are not in a state of emergency.

There is a difference between keeping track of the possibility of a storm and boarding up the windows and leaving. Most of the state is just at the keeping track stage.

Don't put so much emphasis on the declaration. Florida has a system of levels: no threat, low threat, moderate threat, and high threat. It is doubtful that any company will cancel their business operations on a preemptive declaration like this, which is just a formality necessary to allow the state to start working with county governments to ensure they are prepared.

Florida also declared a state of emergency for Emily in July. I don't believe any cruises were cancelled.

It's still too early for anyone to foster an expectation that their cruise will be cancelled.

Right now Jacksonville News4jax.com is showing arrival of Irma's "affects" by 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Miami cruises could potentially drop off but could not turn around a new cruise on time. That being said, Ft. Lauderdale is minutes away and any cruises from that port are unlikely as well. Possibly - and this is from someone who SOOOO wants to make my cruise where ever (or nowhere) it may go, they could drop and pick up in Port Canaveral? Tampa? Tampa is risky based on possible projections, but with no real answers, all the FL ports could be risky depending on timing and direction. I mean I live in an evacuation zone, what better place than just take off on a cruise I already paid for !! :-)

I called Carnival just a while ago, they said their managers were discussing hurricane Irma and would be issuing out notices/alerts etc. on upcoming cruises by late tonight or tomorrow morning. They advised to log into Carnival if you didn't get an email or text alert. I'm done worrying, it's making me go crazy.

Tampa may not be an option either as there is a small possibility that she doesn't turn north until she passes the bottom of Florida into the Gulf of Mexico! Best scenario she turns north before Florida, but it's way too early to tell anything now. No cruise line will tell you of any changes until the possibilities are lowered.

It looks like all the models say that Irma is giving to hit the southern tip of Florida on Sunday going south to north.

Too soon to call if it will go up the east coast, west coast, or right up the middle.

Do note that the governor has already declared a State of Emergency for the whole state,

I am wondering how cruise ships can get out of port or into port in strong wind conditions.

Since it is a big system, strong winds will extend out wider than the state. So also wondering how well big ships will handle that getting across the storm track. Since it is going nearly straight north, no easy way to avoid it.

Not a good weekend to start a cruise.

Sorry for the glum news but somebody has to report these things. Go to Wunderground and look into their reports.

Cruise lines would go out of business if people didn't cruise all year round and who wants to swim or snorkel in January? If you're not booked on a cruise that could be impacted by IRMA, why are you interested in our discussion? It obviously doesn't apply to you.
