Can a Registered Sex Offender (Tier 1) go on a Carnival Cruise Line?

Update:

We were able to cruise with no problem with the exception of coming back to the Miami port where customs stopped my husband for a supposedly random inspection in which they wrote down his cell phone serial number (they looked thru his pictures) checked his luggage, and wrote more things down from his birth certificate. I flat out asked if it was due to him being registered but he deferred the question and gave me a pamphlet.

I had called Carnival (prior to travel) and asked if they don't allow SO's on board, just to get it overwith. She was very nice and told me that they don't however, when you check in, the system runs a background check thru some FBI sight and they will red flag you depending on what you did. She said if my husband wasn't red flagged so far we should be good. She also said if you did a crime against a child you will definitely get red flagged and your booking cancelled for sure.

Hope this info helps.

Thank you for the update. GREAT you got to cruise and hope you all enjoyed. Welcome back.

What was the pamphlet Customs gave you in response to the question you asked?

Thank you. It was a generic pamphlet on how Customs will randomly pull people aside for further checking and if they have to keep any electronics for further investigation it tells you who to follow up with.

This ability for US border crossings to request your phone and electronics at random came up on our Canadian CBC news this week. They can request your password to unlock your device and review all documents and photos. If you refuse, they can confiscate the device.

They haven't yet been able to access things stored in the Cloud, so remove or store elsewhere anything that you would consider an infringement of your privacy.

All of it makes me slightly sick, truth to be told.

Easy.. don't go through U.S. Customs and Immigration if it is going to make you sick. I would avoid making myself sick by not opting to voluntarily put myself in the posittion I know could make me sick. I'd stay away seeing it is a free l choic e and totally avoidable.

911 made me sick. There can't be enough reasonable vigilance when it comes to transportation.

If it makes you sightly sick, it would be best if you did not visit the US.

While US citizens have certain rights at the border foreigners do not have those rights and if you don't want to let them look at your electronics, either leave them at home, or don't come to the US.

Canadian border agents also have the right to search personal computers, etc

And they do. Looking specifically for child porn.

A retired Catholic Bishop had his laptop searched at a Canadian airport after arriving from Thailad several years ago. The agents discovered that it was filled with images of child porn. They aren't just looking at suspicious types in dirty trench coats either.

He was charged with a criminal offence and subsequently found guilty.

A coworker of mine retired several years back and we saw a story a few years ago in the news at him getting caught at the Canadian/US border with child porn. To the people saying it’s sick. Sorry, child porn is sicker. By all means, can look through my stuff if it gets them off the streets.

That is our view as well.

Besides, entering a country is a privilege not a right. We are often quite amazed at people who some how believe that the laws and the customs in their home country are extraterritorial and applies everywhere they travel.

Just want to sincerely thank you for coming back and updating. The "sex offender" laws when all parties are mid-to-late teens are, in my opinion, causing some real damage to the lives of people are not actual "sex offenders." It takes a lot of courage to post about these gray areas, even anonymously, and people rarely follow up.

(Another one is the "can you take a cruise to Alaska if you've ever has a DUI", and the answer still seems to be "maybe".)

Thanks to you and others for concerns about my 'health'. You are correct....I do have a choice and have made it.

The point was, one doesn't need a criminal record to be treated like one....and that goes for citizens as well as visitors.

The border agents are looking for specific items. child porn, perhaps some proof that you are entering the country to work when you have stated otherwise, or some sort of i dictation of criminal activity. They are busy folks. It is not as if they are going to root through you knickers.

Let them do their job. It is a challenging and an important one. Why be a jerk about it.

Your alternative is to remain within the borders of your own country. It is your choice.

My opinion, if you have nothing to hide then you don't have anything to worry about. The agents are just doing their jobs.

If they want to look at anything I am carrying, no problem. I expect them to be professional and they have the right to expect me to be c ourteous and cooperative.

Amen, amen, amen.

So many Americans are willing to cede the Rights granted by the Bill of Rights except maybe those under the Second Amendment.
