cruiser123! Posted February 10, 2018 #1 Share Posted February 10, 2018 i know this is a stupid quiestion so please don’t flame me, but why the concern for who is the cruise director? Do they get to decide which games/activities/etc are onboard or ?? I have only been on three cruises (none RCCL) and the activities were all the same....newlywed game etc. what am I missing? bluecookies Posted February 10, 2018 #2 Share Posted February 10, 2018 A cruise director sometimes sets the tone or atmosphere for the ship. They are a portion of the entertainment as they emcee shows, host games and events, etc. To be honest... it really doesn't matter to me who the CD is, but it's a big deal to others. SamTimeDining Posted February 10, 2018 #3 Share Posted February 10, 2018 I find the CD threads more valuable than the Captain threads, haha. Is anyone actually choosing to NOT cruise a specific itinerary based on the Captain? "Oh he's no good, he crashes us into things!" ;p:'):o
TNcrzr4life Posted February 10, 2018 #4 Share Posted February 10, 2018 Some are, quite frankly, better than others. Yes, they do basically the same things but sometimes with totally different approaches. My favorite was on a 4 night Monarch sailing several years ago. DD and I found him to be energetic but not over the top crazy. I follow him on fb and it has been great to see Royal thinks highly of him, too, as he just took over on Harmony. BekkaW Posted February 10, 2018 #6 Share Posted February 10, 2018 As people have said, it can make a difference. We enjoy quest for example, but I have seen it vary dramatically based on the CD and AM. There are CDs I would prefer not to sail with.

Psycho and Barb Posted February 10, 2018 #8 Share Posted February 10, 2018 The Cruise Director can make a Cruise Awesome...Or just average. Their personality and leadership has a big influence on their staff and the quality of the shows. We had one on Oasis a few years ago who was awesome...Unfortunately I can’t remember his name right now. He was all over the ship and cutting up every time I saw him. During the 70 show on the Promenade deck...He was killing it on the electric guitar. Not an air guitar...He was awesome! Could of played with lots of major bands Sent from my iPad using Forums
DerekDun8 Posted February 10, 2018 #9 Share Posted February 10, 2018 BingBong! we've never cruise with him but we are on Harmony in two weeks and I'm excited to see what he's all about haha
typintotravel Posted February 10, 2018 #10 Share Posted February 10, 2018 I've often wondered this also. Do people pick a cruise because of the cruise director? And the same with bed placements! Neither a high priority for me! Just get me on the ship and enjoy! Sent from my iPad using Forums
JOHN__S Posted February 10, 2018 #11 Share Posted February 10, 2018 You'd be surprised how a cruise director can change a cruise! The flying Scotsman. Seven cruises he's the only one I remember. So much fun! Sent from my iPhone using Forums
George C Posted February 10, 2018 #12 Share Posted February 10, 2018 While some are better than others really not a big deal, same goes for captain
SG65CB Posted February 10, 2018 #13 Share Posted February 10, 2018 I have noticed some are more entertaining than others and better at getting the crowd partying. Some are annoying in their attempts. But I think it would be difficult to book a cruise based on the cruise director (or the captain) because you don't know how much longer they will be on the ship. Six months from now when you set sail their contract has expired and they have been rotated to another ship.
SG65CB Posted February 10, 2018 #14 Share Posted February 10, 2018 p.s. I never click in and read the cruise director or captain threads, but this one caught my attention because I have wondered the same thing.
CapeCoralCruiser Posted February 10, 2018 #15 Share Posted February 10, 2018 BingBong! One of our favorites! Looking forward to seeing him on Harmony. And yes, they range from very entertaining to down right annoying. We've had several good CDs, some OK ones, and a couple whom I would be disappointed seeing onboard. rdsxgrl28 Posted February 10, 2018 #18 Share Posted February 10, 2018 Don't really pay attention. But I will absolutely fall in love with any CD who does not do a 70's disco night. Disco was the worst music ever!!!!!!!
CelticMCO Posted February 10, 2018 #19 Share Posted February 10, 2018 Agree wholeheartedly why? We book on schedule, ports, value - plus if you think the Millennials will care one whiff who the CD is your kidding yourself...
Funbobby68 Posted February 10, 2018 #20 Share Posted February 10, 2018 Never cared , till we had Graham Seymour... now all others are compared to him , few meet the mark Sent from my iPad using Forums
leaveitallbehind Posted February 10, 2018 #21 Share Posted February 10, 2018 (edited) Why? Fair question. I guess to some people, who the cruise director is matters in terms of their cruise enjoyment and the ships they prefer to sail on. They may cruise relative to activities and events on board that involve the cruise director and base their level of enjoyment with their cruise in part on that. They may feel that there are some cruise directors that are better than others and that matters to them when they cruise. We're not among them........ Don't get me wrong, we have met many cruise directors and have cruised with several multiple times. And if that is important to some, fine. But who the cruise director is on board any given cruise makes no difference to us. So I guess IMO, why indeed? Bkchero Posted February 10, 2018 #22 Share Posted February 10, 2018 I’m relatively new to the cruise world but based on how I partake in cruise activities I cannot imagine it will ever matter to me. Having said that I can see how it could matter to some, on my most recent cruise the CD was intimately involved in many of the activities. So I understand the point even if it doesn’t matter as much to me.
