semibeater Posted December 30, 2018 #1 Share Posted December 30, 2018 Too foggy for yesterday's ships to leave so Rotterdam and two others stuck outside port today Sunday 12/30. Very low visibility for awhile. Perils of winter cruising.

welovetocruise1234 Posted December 30, 2018 #4 Share Posted December 30, 2018 The Rotterdam is not in port. Two Royal ships are in its pier spot because they didn’t leave. We were told to come back later, boarding is delayed. HAL didn’t even have the courtesy to email or contact us. We could have waited at home. catl331 Posted December 30, 2018 #5 Share Posted December 30, 2018 (edited) Rotterdam and Carnival Miracle are still stopped well outside the bridge as of 5-6 minutes ago. Maybe the two RCCL ships at the piers were unable to leave this morning. Edited December 30, 2018 by catl331

It was clear on the local Tampa news weather report that heavy fog was to be expected last night into mid to late morning today. The low visibility (1/2 mile or less) was to extend for 20-30 miles inland. The same scenario is also expected for tonight.

Sounds like the fog will be heavy by the time today's ships are ready to leave and it will be another overnight in Tampa. Roy
Krazy Kruizers Posted December 30, 2018 #12 Share Posted December 30, 2018 Wow -- feel sorry for all the passengers involved in this. Many people missed flights home. Others can't start their holiday. Very sad for everyone.

Djptcp Posted December 30, 2018 #16 Share Posted December 30, 2018 DH works part-time for the cruise lines at the Port of Tampa. It's a very long day for him today because of the fog that closed the Port yesterday and didn't open until later this morning. Two Royal Caribbean ships couldn't leave yesterday and three ships were anchored west of the Sunshine Bridge waiting to enter Tampa Bay. Looks like things are working out, albeit later than usual. I hope passengers are taking things in stride as employees do their best to get passengers where they need to go and get checked in and boarded. Fog is not something the cruise lines can avoid and passenger safety is their main concern. I would imagine air traffic was backed up at the Tampa Airport as well with the foggy conditions. Krazy Kruizers Posted December 31, 2018 #21 Share Posted December 31, 2018 I figured that the Rotterdam would have to cancel a port. There isn't any way they can make up all that lost time.

Nashna Posted December 31, 2018 #24 Share Posted December 31, 2018 Is Tampa typically fogged in during the Winter or is this just a fluke weather issue? What about Ft. Lauderdale or Miami?
Krazy Kruizers Posted December 31, 2018 #25 Share Posted December 31, 2018 Not as a rule. But I do know that Tampa gets some fog -- just can't predict if this will be one of those years when they may have more fog compared to other years. Mobile and Galveston also get a lot of fog. And we had a cruise delayed in San Diego because of fog.
