jay888 Posted June 30, 2019 #1 Share Posted June 30, 2019 Hi, I keep hearing about HAL famous bread pudding. What is it please ?
CalGal254 Posted June 30, 2019 #2 Share Posted June 30, 2019 It is a yummy concoction of baked day-old bread, milk, butter, eggs, cinnamon, sugar, vanilla, and raisins, which you top with a vanilla custard. Recipe is available online. 1
Homosassa Posted June 30, 2019 #3 Share Posted June 30, 2019 It is what you call bread and butter pudding in the UK. Look for it in the Lido buffet; usually by the ice cream.

Rare SumoCitrus Posted June 30, 2019 #5 Share Posted June 30, 2019 It's one of the things I look forward to most when I cruise on HAL. It's a wonderful custardy bread that is served in a bowl with a rich warm vanilla sauce ladled on top. You have to try it. 1

Bread pudding (bread and butter pudding) is not my favorite but my husband loves the stuff. On the other hand, I do like spice cake (bread pudding). Rare puppycanducruise Posted June 30, 2019 #7 Share Posted June 30, 2019 I didn't think I liked bread pudding until I had it on a HAL cruise. Now, it's one of the first things I look for in the Lido.
jay888 Posted June 30, 2019 Author #8 Share Posted June 30, 2019 That’s a pudding from my childhood which I love 😊
Krazy Kruizers Posted June 30, 2019 #9 Share Posted June 30, 2019 I don't care for HAL's bread pudding -- the sauce (watered down custard) is terrible. Years ago the Amsterdam ship used to have a dark chocolate bread pudding with a dark chocolate custard -- now that was really good -- JMO.
wyobean Posted June 30, 2019 #10 Share Posted June 30, 2019 Honestly, it is a lot of hype about nothing...lol. I make way better bread pudding than they do. Tasted it once. That was all I needed.
Rare Lady Arwen Posted June 30, 2019 #11 Share Posted June 30, 2019 Honestly, it is not as good as it used to be years ago. Now, it's okay, but it was fabulous before. The sauce is not the same either. Oh well, lots of other desserts to try!
GeorgesGal Posted June 30, 2019 #12 Share Posted June 30, 2019 But don't forget, bread pudding is only available at luncheon in the Lido! However, don't fret; every night HAL's MDR has a fabulous 'crisp'! Fruit based with a struesel type crispy topping. Add some ice cream to top off the warm crisps. Yummy!

We've even been known to eat somewhere other than the MDR for dinner, then go not too long before they close and order a crisp with coffee for dessert. 🤩

A few years later on the Zuiderdam and Oosterdam it was not nearly as good. I tried it again on the Oosterdam earlier this month in Alaska hoping it would be as good as the first time but it was a big disappointment.
Rare terrydtx Posted June 30, 2019 #17 Share Posted June 30, 2019 Southern style Beard Pudding with a bourbon sauce is one of my favorite deserts. It is very popular in New Orleans and most of Alabama. I hope to try it on the Noordam in July.

One's first time is nearly always 'the best', and subsequent similar experiences rarely measure up to that first one. 😉

JOHN 57 Posted July 1, 2019 #21 Share Posted July 1, 2019 Looking forward to trying bread pudding on our cruise on the Volendam 18-25 Sep 19 out of Vancouver. Now I have had bread pudding from the casinos in Shreveport, Louisiana. Now that was good. I will give Holland America's bread pudding a try. More flavor than vanilla. But I do get the vanilla - don't like when the raisins are sprinkled on top, they give it a burnt taste......

Nope, it actually applies to most folks' 'first time' experience of most anything, really.
