CDC says you only have to COVID test post cruise on more than four night cruise

I just read today that the CDC has made another change, now only requiring post cruise testing on cruises that are longer than four nights. Everyone knows it's the 5th night where the COVID gets ya. 🙂

Only for unvaccinated passengers. If you look at the timeline for onset of symptoms from exposure to when you are infectious it does make sense.

Man, I really wonder why they aren't requiring people to test after four days at Disney, or four days at a casino, or four days into a business trip at a chain hotel.

Wait, did I miss it? Did we already agree on why this isn't a thing? If someone knows, I'd love to know, cause I'm doing a bunch of reading and just not seeing the specialness of trying to sink the cruise industry.

I mean just in the last few days the CDC has changed their science about 5 times, so...I feel like they could just go ahead, give in, and tell everyone they have new information, it would be fine.

You apparently are not reading anything about the COVID incubation period. If you Google that term you will get 29,000,000 results that explain it.

To the contrary, I feel that I'm quite well informed, because I really am trying to understand the arbitrary information coming out of the CDC. What I am reading is that the incubation period does not match what the CDC is requiring. Especially since they say the samples can be taken 24 hours in advance. So a whole day earlier than the four days.  Incubation is normally five days, at which time you have a high enough viral load to test positive and show symptoms. So, three days (which is likely when the cruise would do the tests in order to have the results available) makes little sense.

It's not arbitrary because of a lack of understanding. If you test negative at the pier and you go on a cruise that is 4 nights long, chances of having exposure, being infected and then having a high enough viral load to test positive on day 3 or 4 is incredibly unlikely. However add additional days to that period and you are more likely to test positive. You have to draw the line somewhere. They decided on 4 nights. 

 

Once positive, now it's the cruise lines responsibility to document your positive test and manage you before you're set free in public to go spread COVID to others.

The CDC doesn't change the science, the CDC changes guidance based on science.

They did. They changed their guidance to say only cruises longer than 4 nights need testing based on what they know about the viruses incubation period.

And two weeks ago we needed masks, but last week we no longer need them. So, what I'm saying is that they can look at the science again and make a change based on what they now know. Save face, no big deal.

Because, the CDC does not directly control Disney, or casinos, or hotels. Those are controlled by state and local governments. This has been discussed repeatedly, but apparently folks are missing the point. Testing was always going to be part of a cruising restart, and currently is on all unvaccinated sailings outside the US. The CDC is obviously allowing for a small exception for vaccinated cruisers, which is in line with other changes made.   Unvaccinated cruisers will still be subject to testing, which is the way it should be.

How do the cruise lines 'know' who's vaccinated?

All states, except New Hampshire, keep records of vaccines in their IIS systems. All providers of COVID-19 vaccines have to submit certain data.  As an example, Florida’s system link is below.
 

The cruise lines will have to figure out a way to verify vaccine status in order to provide a certification to the CDC if they decide to conduct vaccinated sailings. Will it be foolproof?  Probably not, but a best effort will need to be made.

Apparently, those operations have a better relationship with the CDC, aka as monetary support.
