Breakaway skipping Bermuda today (October 27)

Something similar: he's been on a bunch of cruises and someone always tested positive but he wasn't worried. I've been being messaged to be careful as there may be covid on my cruise.. No one went to the hospital just quarantined.  He then went on to say how many times he's had transplants and cancer, etc. (high risk) And because of his exercise routing he's been building up his immunity.

New rule.  OBC cannot be used for CN.  I’m in a snit with NCL on the issue as we speak.

Honestly, they didn't contractually have to give anyone on that ship anything, they can't control the weather.

I agree.  My issue is related to another sailing.  I’m just confirming that this credit cannot be used to buy CruiseNexts.

What do people think about refunds of port charges?  We were only in Bermuda one day, so I was wondering if they would credit back some of the port charges.

TBH with all the restrictions on obc use, they didn’t give anything to a lot of people on that cruise. I can appreciate that NCL doesn’t want to cash people out, but to not allow it to be applied to service charge and/or cruise next is just nasty.

 

Plus pax absolutely should be credited with port fees and departure taxes NCL didn’t need to pay. That’s a minimum of $50 per head, and perhaps more.

I think that’s more than fair on NCL’s behalf. I agree spending OBC can actually be difficult depending on your habits. We had $200 (stockholder and something else) and used it on Teppanyaki for us and my in-laws who were also on board, it was well worth it, great dinner. But we only spent another $25 or so on some Starbucks during the week. Otherwise that was it. I guess we would’ve gone alcohol shopping or something if we HAD to spend more!  Even their selection of NCL merch is really poor,  nothing was even tempting to buy. 
 

Anyway, thanks to those onboard for taking us along with you.   Safe and fun travels back home!

The guy at guest services explained no casino ,cruise next or grats. That's when I started thinking of every little possible charge I could and asked. He called the boss when he needed the arcade answer.  I just was happy he put my gfs stuff on my account to burn mine up. So we got the full value and made me a bit happier.

I asked about this and was told that NCL pays the port fees whether they dock or not, since the pier is reserved for them.

I agree that NCL has no legal obligation to give us anything. But I do believe very strongly in creating business goodwill in situations like this. I’m sure NCL thought that $30O OBC for two people in a cabin was generous, but as discussed above, the timing makes it difficult, if not impossible, for some if not many folks to use it, or use all of it.  
 

I think part of what I feel is colored by the  expense and hassle of securing the Bermuda Travel authorization. The application fee of $75 each for my wife and me, and another $75 each for a guaranteed time to receive the results of our first PCR test. That’s $300 right there. Then the anxiety of the antigen test and the second PCR test, worrying about the possibility (small though it might have been) of being quarantined for the cruise. 
 

Again, I totally recognize that NCL was under no legal obligation to do anything. But since they decided to do something, they should have made it meaningful for everyone under the circumstances.

Bermuda required the tests for their TA. Not NCL.

They told me no. See my comment 139 above. This strikes me as a little weird, since you always read about port charges being refunded when a ship doesn’t dock. Perhaps the guest services rep explained it poorly, and the lack of refund has to do with the fact that we docked on Friday (for 7 hours).

it it also weird that other cruise lines do refund you port taxes if the ship misses the port

Not all  do. Oceania doesn't break out port charges taxes and fees a separate item so they never refund the charges when they miss a port, and that policy was in place even  before they became part of NCLH.

The refunding of port charges on other cruise lines has been inconsistent in my experience and may be just as much a function of whether the port refunds them to the cruise line as the cruise line's own policies.

That would have been pretty difficult, since we were in Bermuda yesterday. 🤣

I’m glad you guys at least made it for one day. I know it is mighty disappointing to miss a port and have it be your only port is even worse.

 

Perhaps there needs to be more of a book at your own risk emphasis with Bermuda cruises at this time of the year because it seems like every year around September and October there are weather issues. If someone books it knowing that, it’s on them for disappointment if they miss it, but if they don’t know, they’re likely to get more outraged.

Bermuda assesses a departure tax of $25 per 24 period on each passenger. https://www.gov.bm/passenger-departure-tax 
As pax were only in Bermuda for one 24 hour period not three 24 hour periods, it seems that they were overcharged by $50.
