Recent cruisers - are they giving out lanyards or no?

Recommended Posts

I searched through posts and it sounds like it's hit or miss on if they got them or not, but nothing recent enough.

We're sailing in a few weeks and I'm just trying to see if we need to bring our own.

* we are in the Haven if that makes a difference *

Thanks much!

There was some talk on here a few months back that you couldn't put a hole in the card or you would destroy the embedded electronics. Anyone?

That is correct...no more hole punches.  And I have never been given a lanyard on any cruise line.

Best be not punching holes in your Key Card -

Will disable the card if punched in Black magnetic strip (back of card)

Also possibly disabled if left too long in proximity to a magnetic source or scratched

Will disable the card if punched anywhere in the vicinity of a holograph image (left center of card)

By disabling the Key Card you will be locked out of your stateroom

Can't get on or off the ship

Can't puchase drinks gifts specialties etc.

Will require a visit to Guest Services to reissue a new UNPUNCHED card

The newer ships have different accessibility features with the key cards

On older ships the hole had to be punched off in a corner so almost the whole card could

be swiped thru computer register or scanning device

Any questions refer them to Guest Services for the answer BEFORE punching !

Suggestion recommendation - use a small plastic envelope and the lanyard - - -

Make sure the card can be easily removed in getting on/off the ship - scanning requirement.

Used facial recognition on my last 2 cruises, so didn't actually need cards to get off/on. But still need activated cards to get into your room, go to reserved events or make purchases/get drinks.

Did your key card have a photo image of you on it -

*-OR-*

Was your photoless key card scanned by machine to document your entry/exit from the ship ?

Hidden facial recognition - remember when you registered - you had your photo taken but it

was not printed on the card but filed with your on board account.

This unless something NEW has been has installed - there has to be a way to document the

number of souls actually on board at any given moment.

Key cards do not have a picture - they are the same as they were before

Yes, this is something new.  Key cards were not scanned, there is a facial scanner that compares your face to the picture on file.  Nothing hidden about it.

Cards are still scanned for other things, just not getting on/off the ship.

I bought a cheap card holder for the back of my cell phone and used that for the three cruises we went on.  Worked really well since I always had my phone on me (I used it to take pictures, not to make phone calls or texts, I was on vacation after all 😄)
