Very few men are dressed up walking around the ship after dinner, even on formal nights.

Sweeping generalisation.

On our  Regal cruise this summer,  about 50% of the men were walking around dressed up after dinner. And on Sky, sailing out of the UK last Autumn, the figure would have been nearer 90%.

The fewer the number of Europeans on board, the more informal the dress code.

I believe your numbers only reflect the Europeans who are more likely to dress up and stay dressed after dinner than would other nationalities.

You should leave from a US port and compare the difference. Even the people who do dress up, most change immediately after dinner.

OK, but the point remains that geographic considerations and passenger nationalities makes sweeping generalisations impossible.

I suppose.....I have nothing current to compare US sailings to.

Going back years ago, everyone seemed to follow a strict dress code no matter where the ships was sailing.

Today leaving from a US port, people are into a more relaxed vacation mode which doesn't include dressing up the way it was years ago.

Either way, enjoy whatever clothing make you happy.

Was on Caribbean Princess in July for 2 weeks & shorts WERE allowed in the Island dining room.

DH wore nice golf shorts/shirt several nights. But I even saw a woman in short jean shorts allowed in.

I'm not saying they should or shouldn't be allowed (DH wasn't anticipating it, but he loved it), just telling you what we encountered.

Why a funeral ? You don't see many white tuxedos at funerals !

And I rarely saw white tuxedos on formal nights in the prehistoric period.

OK, how about this:  "It's a vacation, not a charity event."

Better?

It's  a wear what you like event. My wife and I like to dress up. You don't.

So we are both happy, right ?

Yep. I have no problem with people overdressing on a cruise as long as I am not expected to. However, too many dress up aficionados don't see it as a "wear what you like event" as you put it, and pass judgment on those of us who "ruin" the ambiance for them. That's extremely rude.

BTW: my original comment was a joke (I even included a smiley face emoticon). Did you not catch that?

people overdressing

You are still being judgemental.  Why am I overdressing ?

I could just as easily say that you were underdressing, but chose not to.

I underdress all the time I am at home.  Nice to wear something different on holiday.

Chill, dude. I'm joking. After all, it's just a vacation, not a jury trial. 😊

As far as you "underdressing" at home - TOO MUCH INFORMATION!!! 😇

You might be surprised what people wear at funerals here in Florida. (including the deceased) 😉

I almost used "at a wedding", but remembered the wedding in Arizona we attended last month. The groom and groomsmen wore red tennis shoes, black jeans, a black T-shirt with red tie printed on them, all finished off with a beer holster and open beer bottle on their belts.

Some people wore shorts, and one very exuberant young lady wore a dress that appeared to be spray painted on. It was an entertaining wedding, even to the point the bride's mother drunkenly insulted the grooms mother, which left the groom fighting mad and the bride in tears, and everyone else very uncomfortable.

The really sad part of this is that the groom was my nephew, who was raised much differently than how we raised our own kids.

BTW: I wore a sports coat, dark slacks, white shirt and tie. I was the one overdressed for that event! LOL!!!

The dress codes apply only to the MDR.  Not the specialty restaurants, the casino, the buffet or any other public venue.  Very few men are dressed up walking around the ship after dinner, even on formal nights.

I don't see a lot of men still "dressed up and walking around the ship" but I do see a lot of men still dressed up in the Atrium area. Generally, on formal nights, we have seen "functions" in the Atrium area (on all decks) where most of the men (and women) are still "dressed up". We also see them dancing in Wheelhouse or Explorer's. (Yes, I'm referring to the older ships. We have only sailed the Royal class once to date.)

If we leave those areas then we see people who are "dressed down". This is especially true on the upper decks. You may see a few grabbing a late snack in the buffet or in Skywalker's but, for the most part, the Lido Deck and above are folks who either didn't "dress up" or who have "dressed down" after MDR dinner. I don't recall anybody getting or giving the "stink eye" to folks who dressed casually.

Two pages long.

Short answer: NO

Long answer: Pack a pair of long pants

Princess answer: We have a policy but are inconsistent with enforcement.  Take your chances.

if anyone is pro long pants - they will quote the Princess 'policy'

if anyone is pro shorts - they will report what they have actually happened and seen on board

Sweeping seat of the pants estimate of numbers in a futile attempt to justify a skewed point of view.

What a guy.

And even fewer on a Princess sailing.

Bring your best lame logic game with you today are you?

The last time I saw anyone wearing a tuxedo on a cruise, white or black, was about 7 years ago. Even on our last Mediterranean cruise just before the pandemic I did not see anyone wearing tuxedos. But, I wasn't looking for them in order to take copious notes on how many were in attendance to try to support my indignation that the slovenly were taking over the world against my will, so they may have scampered past me before I noticed them.
