Regent fight: Altercation On Luxury Cruise Ship

The physical fight I witnessed on Mariner (or was it Voyager?) six or seven years ago was all-about--no surprise--a deck lounge.  Just-walking in the area when observing two guys yelling at each other on either side of the lounge both were trying to simultaneously occupy.

Yells devolved into an exchange of punches, some of which landed. They then got into a wrestling match until both fell on the deck.  Staff intervened. An Officer arrived, ordering them to return to their Suites. The Officer asked me and two other passengers who observed the situation to write down what we had seen.  He obtained our Suite numbers.  Received a message later that afternoon in our Suite to meet with either him or another senior Officer so a record could be made.  Did so.

A bit later--comes an announcement to all Suites from the Captain asking anyone who had observed the event to contact him, or a ship's officer.  Perhaps others did.

Next day, Captain made another general announcement advising the miscreants had been restricted to their Suites; and would remain so until the ship arrived at the next Port.  They would then be offloaded for return at their own expense to wherever they came from.

MOST important:  Captain advised they would not be allowed to book another cruise on any Regent ship.

No-doubt, alcohol probably was a contributing factor.

I am sure they are all off-ship by now. Allowing passengers to restrain another passenger while Regent staff stands there and does nothing would be, IMO, grounds for a huge lawsuit.

The lack of security is appalling.

Agree with you Pcardad. I wasn’t there so I don’t know all the background of what happened but you would think that Regent staff would have taken a much more active role in getting things calmed down instead of just being bystanders. I would be curious to hear from someone who saw the incident and could bring some clarity to how it evolved.

Pithy hindsight here.  I doubt that there are ongoing drills for what to do when passengers fight on a Regent ship.   I imagine the security detail are the point people but is it their job to patrol the ship?  I imagine they were called on the radio and it took them a minute to get to the area.  In addition, the man at the head of the person on the ground was barking orders at the staff to put the guy in handcuffs and telling the others to stay the course.  We don’t know what happened next.

I watched the video and like others I was left with many questions.  I kept trying to figure out where on the ship this was happening and was it really Regent.   It wasn’t obvious but I did recognize the carpet.  There does appear to be a very tight lid on information or comment from other passengers onboard.

The lack of information will again lead to speculation and rumors and people will draw their own conclusions. The video that I saw took tongue in cheek shots at Regent’s clientele saying things like the fight must have broken out because they were arguing over the last piece of caviar. It should be surprising that this type of thing happens but society these days is very intolerant of ideas and actions that don’t line up with their own beliefs. Sadly, we see it every day and it’s becoming more the norm than the exception.

The video that I saw was of a couple of jerks fighting, a  large woman offering perhaps a cocktail and a crew member with a radio appearing to do nothing. As a barmaid for 20 years... a surprise pitcher of ice water and a couple of guys to yank them apart. There seemed to be a lot of men standing around watching. Has anybody ever seen a bar fight? Maybe in college? Common sense didn't kick in? Has Regent said anything about how this should have been handled? Confounding.

It is right outside the Voyager lounge on Deck 4 facing forward.

Cracked me up!  I wondered the same thing…..even if she was offering water it was a peculiar response to the scene in front of her.

Let's see:

Wealthy entitled people - Check

Access to copious amounts of alcohol - Check

Small, contained environment where people keep running into the same folks - Check

Out past the 3 mile limit where people think "anything goes"- Check

No visible security or police force - Check

What could go wrong?

Looks like the guy on the ground was pretty young for regent, appeared to be European (voyager is in the aegean) and probably had too much based on his noises.  The guy in blue said "he hit 3 men already" so they were probably restraining him until security got there.  May have happened in lounge or casino.  I'm sure he is no longer on the ship.  Not sure about the guys holding him down.  If the young guy was out of control, then restraining him was probably the best course of action.  I'm surprised security wasn't already there as some staff should have picked up the phone a called the alarm.   Interesting if we hear from anyone on the ship.

Just my view with what we can tell from the video.

We were on the Voyager many years ago (2007 i think) and there was a man on board who was full of himself.  At the end of the Cordon Bleu Course final dinner that he attended with his wife, out of the blue, he decked a friend of ours unprovoked and broke his glasses.  It was the final night of the cruise and our friend and the offender, were banned to their cabins.
