That I understand.  But, to be able to say only 50 people can hear the performance, I can't imagine that's something anyone can control.  What about the people who are milling about outside the venue?  Do you have to account for them?  How about the people at the Syd Norman's Bar on the Waterfront?  Do you have to account for them, too?  How about the people casually walking by Syd Norman's?  Are they considered part of those who are hearing the performance?

Point being, I don't see how anyone can charge copyright fees based on the number of people who can hear the performance.  It would be impossible to enforce.

I don't know that the fees are based on the number of people who may hear it/see it.  I'm not sure how it works to be honest.

In November 2023 on Viva, we were alble to get in to any show at Syd’s we wanted.

Dec 2023, Viva, unable to get into Syds (because I refuse to waste an hour+ of my vacation waiting in lines).

On Prima a year ago this week. Walked up to Syd's just as they opened the doors. No line...zero...zilch. Walked right in, sat right down (that's a 60's song reference for those as old as I am),

I guess those were the good old days before Syd's lines became a thing.

OK.....I remember that song.  Had no clue who performed it until right now.  I thought it was the Smother's Brothers.

were you from San Juan?

I think the November cruise was Europe or TA, so maybe not  as full. We are on Viva next week from San Juan and looks sold out. I expect we will likely be facing looongg lines but more likely, just give it a miss as you did.

Venue....I have no idea if there are "copyright" issues.  That doesn't seem like a "thing".  Either you are allowed to perform the music or you're not.  I don't know how anyone would track how many people it's performed for.  Further, there are more than one performances for some of the shows.  How you regulate that is a tough ask.

...

I do believe putting it in a bigger venue would take away from the feel and ambiance of the show, given the amount of audience interaction the performers have.

It's not unheard of for performers who want a particular feel and ambiance to put restrictions on the venue where their copyrighted material can be played.

@Laszlo makes that Rumors show an expensive ticket - 🤣

The Rumors set was good but not mind blowing, definitely not as good as the original tour. And that entire concert was about the price of lunch at a chain restaurant today - inflation !

Yea, the "Rumors" Band on the Getaway were OK. I've seen better local bands in venues around Philadelphia. One of the singers in the band was "Local" I think she was from Lancaster.

Something tells me the remaining members of Fleetwood Mac care.  They've been so fractured for so long, they probably couldn't agree where, when or how their music is performed.  LOL!

As the OP said, people lining up 2 hours ahead of time get a seat but that doesn't mean everyone has to go that early to get a seat.  We lined up an hour before showtime and people who showed up 45 minutes before still got a seat.  Doors open 30 minutes before so it you show up about 45 minutes before its really only 15 minutes of standing.

This is the rumors show only.  We showed up at doors open for the Prom night and didn't have a problem finding a seat.

I believe its more that the Syd's show is actually owned by another company and NCL pays for it.  If you moved the shows to the theater, it would be an additional expense that NCL is probably not willing to add on.

Edit:  The Syd's concept was created by the Rock of Ages creator and there is an LLC created for it.

THIS.

more or less. but it's not about requiring more money.

it's been discussed ad nauseam in other threads, but here we go again.

NCL came to the "rock of ages" people and said "create a show for us." they did. and the contract stipulates that the show must be performed in the club named after its fictitious club owner. the creators felt, as do many in this thread (including me), that the show's success depends on audience interaction and the intimacy of the club. so, it would be a contract violation to perform the show in the theatre. but you wouldn't want to see that show, anyway... it would be a very different show.

the syd norman shows are are a highly scripted immersive theatre experience purpose built for the club in which they are performed; they are not ordinary concerts!

You should save that comment in  your files since you will  have to repost the same thing multiple times.

Or, perhaps, you should make it a sticky.

I may be the only one, but I hope they never move the Rumors show to the main theater. Fleetwood Mac was great, but I don't care about seeing a cover band perform a whole album. People complain about getting in line early to get a seat. I go to the theater 30 minutes early to get a good seat for the shows there if it is something I am really interested in. I have never seen a show in Syd's because in my opinion the show is not going to be worth waiting in line to see. That said, I do think a better venue would be the area that was used for the Supper Club on the Away ships. It holds more people, but still feels intimate. Of course, this type of venue does not exist on the Prima class ships. Future builds need a Supper Club or Spinnaker type of space.

Its more than just a cover band performing a whole album.  Its telling the story of how the album came together through the divorce of the McVie's and the breakup of Lindsey Buckingham/Stevie Nicks.  Each person in the band wrote their songs to explain how they were feeling while this was going on.

Yes, we were on the first run from San Juan.  Ship was full.

We were on Getaway in October doing a transatlantic cruise. There was one couple who started queueing 3 hours before the show was due to start in Syds! The first night I saw them, I actually went and checked they knew what time the start time was, as I was so shocked. They did know, they said that they loved the shows and wanted to guarantee a seat. We saw them every night there was a show on, and they were always that early.

I can't imagine anything is that good that I'd want to spend 3 hours of my holiday queueing for it!

We didn't get to see any of the shows, as I have mobility issues and cannot stand. My husband could have stood in the queue, but then I wouldn't have been with him for an hour or so, and would have been sat somewhere on my own. That didn't appeal, so we didn't bother. Shame, as I've heard the shows are excellent, but the system as it is just isn't geared up for people who aren't able to stand in a queue.

On the Escape last June, there was no Haven perk, or at least no one from the Haven used the perk, because we were one of the first to get in and there was no one already in the club (Prom night show).

I know some won't like this, but I send my adult children to hold my place in line.  We were finishing dinner at La Cucina and I sent them (twins) to go get in line, we followed shortly thereafter (we were a party of 6).

I'm a former Disneyland cast member (worked on Space Mtn for three years) and I have strong feelings about waiting your turn and waiting in line.  If a quarter of your group or more is waiting in line, then they can hold the spot for the rest, especially if you have people in your party with mobility issues.

So, you feel like you don't have to get to the back of the line, regardless of reason?  You can't do both.  Have dinner in LaCucina and get in line for the show.  Why can't you all go together to get in line for the show?

This is what creates ill feelings between passengers on a cruise.

I can see having to use the restroom and need to leave the line for 5 minutes.  But, I personally will call you out and not allow you to cut in line in front of me for any other reason.

I see this on cruise ships all the time.  To me it's the same as "chogs".....I just went to lunch and put my towels down on a lounger by the pool for two hours.....

It's this belief that no one else is on the cruise ship and it doesn't matter who else you inconvenience as long as you can do everything you please.

Disney employee has nothing to do with this, whatsoever!

Intersting.  I've seen all the "Syd's" shows.  I like how they give the humorous back story about who the fictitious "Syd" was.  I enjoyed the other shows as much as I did the "Rumours" show.

Boarded Prima last Fr in Galveston.

New Syd’s crew as well; they got in late so no show 1st night as usual.

2nd night people were lining up 1hr 45 min b4!

Last night only 1 Rumours show (vocalist who does Stevie skipped 2nd show with strained voice; she sounded amazing for Rumours!)

People in line more than 2 hrs prior!!!

They have done a great job—as a young new cast, no surprise getting  small kinks worked out. Each show their chemistry & harmonies better & tighter. The crowd has loved them❤️

Now, it does seem even with long lines, most finding seats; only those coming after doors open (usually 45 min prior) may have to stand (and many did each night!)

Met some other super fun Syd groupies from Houston on this cruise—even another Syd’s Prom Queen!😉

When we were on the Getaway we got to Syds no later than one hour before show started. It was worth the wait but man that is a small venue for the amount of people who want to see the show.

Have seen the entire show twice...80's music, Rumours, Prom.  Two different ships, two different casts.  First time as a guest of the Haven where about 3-4 of us were escorted through the back stage area to the venue 45 minutes before show time (15 minutes before the doors opened).

2nd time we waited in line (had a balcony cabin) 30 minutes.  Found a tall table. Weren't the first, nor the last in line.  There really are no bad seats (unless you're SRO).

Either way, you're waiting.

For sure.

Now I've seen most shows 5x...(Missed one night in Aug; hit wall Thurs so missed prom😂)

4 different casts.

Doors opened 30 min prior on Getaway & Breakaway, 45 min on Prima.

We just got off the Escape. Each night we would go to Tobacco Road which is next to Syd’s and sit with a cocktail and watch for a line to form. Then we would get in line once someone started a line. I think the longest I stood was 15 or 20 minutes. They opened the doors 45 minutes to an hour before the show depending on the rehearsal. After dinner we would find a place to sit with a drink anyway so it may as well be in Syd’s!

We also heard the Rock of Ages explanation from an NCL employee who was watching the door while we waited.
