Cruise's tomorrow out of Miami. Anticipating that my S will be bored out of his mind.  Is there anything to do for young adults 18-19?  There is a club for teens, but does not seem like there's anything for that age group?

There is a game room with air hockey and other games. Maybe you can give him a spending allowance.

The drinking age in the Bahamas is 18. That won't work at Ocean Cay but if you're also going into Nassau, let him have a drink or two downtown such as Senor Frogs or Margaritaville.

Have him do the Robotron, the F1 simulator, the 4D cinema, the arcade, the pool table, shuffle board, gym, basketball/volleyball/tennis/soccer court (depends on how it's set up), pool, hot tubs,  waterpark, water slides, go to the Spa, etc.

At night, he can see shows, dance at parties, hang out with others his own age, watch sports at the sports bar, etc.

If he's bored, it's because he isn't trying to not be. Nobody is going to hold his hand to help him alleviate his boredom. He has to go out and find things on the ship that interest him.

My sister had four girls.  Whenever one of them said ‘I’m bored’, her reply was ‘clean your room’.  It shut them up.  But I guess that wouldn’t work on a cruise ship…. EM

First, I don't consider 18-19 year olds either 'teens' or 'at need for much help for activity decisions and socialization.'  Not many generations ago 18 year old males were jumping in to register to go to war overseas.  A week on a new billion dollar cruise ship doesn't seem to be such a comparable dilemma. Currently, most that age are planning on heading to college.  S will be fine.  Let him go.

Second, did you consider letting the S 'bring a friend?'  Seriously, with a friend (and likely free under the promotions), 'you' will have the boredom problems and he and his friend will be 'out of sight.'

Take care.  Raised 3 sons and never 'planned' much for them after 15 or so.  All meant in good spirit.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I love the judgemental comments the best. He is not worried of being bored, I am. He already finished a year of university,  does not need "spending money," does not drink, and does not play video games. He is planning to spend time on deck getting ahead on his studies. I just thought maybe there's a club to meet other young people, but I guess, it's a no.

Thanks everyone.

There’s music playing in some venues on the ship every night.  That might be a good place to meet people his age.  I hope you all have a fantastic time!

I know everyone is different...but as a teen, I would have been in heaven hanging out by the pool in the sun for a week with free access to a buffet of tasty food almost 24 hours a day. Watching movies on the huge screen at night would have been really cool to me, too.

I understand the stress of wanting your family to have a good time - I do the same thing. I think they will be fine! (and by the way, I would encourage them to put their studies aside for the trip and enjoy the break!) 🙂

Hope you have a great trip!

I hear ya, the answers were pretty judgmental, and not really helpful. I know that age is a weird age on a ship, activities are often geared for younger teens and kids, or older adults- the 18- 21 range can be a bit rough because they can't hang at the bars and drink, and it's hard to just "Find friends" when you don't really have a place to do that. I'm not sure what they do on MSC, but Royal finally developed a group called Hyperlink which is meet ups and activities specifically geared toward people this age. Hopefully MSC has something similar, good luck and hope you are all having a good time!!  Sorry some of the others were such jerks about this! Come back and let us know how it was!!

The ability that others have to give their opinion is the same ability that you have to give yours🙄

Its not hard to just answer a question without stuff like "when we were 18 we joined the military" and "if they're bored, it's their fault"   How about some actual solutions and suggestions without the snark. It's a known fact that the 18-21 crowd DO struggle to meet others and find stuff to do geared toward them, so it was a fair question

Like referring to people as "such jerks"? 🤔

You're doing the exact same thing that you're complaining about.

Some gave an opinion...which is perfectly fine.

You gave your opinion...which is perfectly fine.

Whether or not you agree or disagree with the opinions given doesn't change the fact that everyone (even you) has the right to give their opinion on this site.

I did snicker a bit about the suggestion to bring a friend along...

I have a 20 year old daughter who lives at home, who we don't cruise with because she's doing her own thing most of the time (which is absolutely fine)...but I'm not about to pay that extra money for a week long cruise to float (see what I did there?) her.  Bringing kids' friends camping and stuff like that..sure...paying an extra 500-1000 for a friend.....I want your life!

Ha...I'd be happy with just one friend.  One year, DH and I footed the bill for our two daughters and their significant others...all of whom were in college.  Three balcony staterooms!  This was on NCL and the rates were actually pretty good, not to mention the inclusions.  Another benefit was that the SO's were taking care of our girls and their high maintenance demands...they forgot that we weren't the Kardashians...ahh good times.  They are both married with children now...I love that our cruising days are just me and DH...I'm sure a second generation of cruising will soon begin...

Had a conversation with our daughter yesterday.  Her middle child, our middle grandson, graduates from college next year and wants to go on a cruise.   According to her all he wants to do is go to beaches and chill out in the sun or even stay on the ship in port. She was all about Coco Cay and i mentioned MSC and the Ocean Cay as it is more of a beaches kind of place and less "Disney land" than Coco Cay, not to mention the prices are better.  Although he'll be 22, his sister, who starts college this year will be 19 is also going to be coming along.  We'll wait until we hear what they choose before we decide if we will go with them.  Chance are that we will not as we are doing a 17-day Sydney to Honolulu, and then five nights in Honolulu April - May of next year.  Pretty sure my DW will be cruised out and not wanting to go on a cruise three weeks after returning.

Give him money to try the Casino.  Our kids loved turning 18 and trying their luck.  My oldest was angry when he tripled his money.  He kept saying it should not work this way.  I should have lost my money...  We kept laughing and said next time you might not be as lucky...LOL...  We taught are 3 young adults to have a limit they planned to lose on the cruise and then STOP.

My favorite thing about cruising is staying on the ship in port.  You get the ship to yourself.

I am trying to stay out of it.  I've made my recommendations but seems all those younger children attractions of Royal Caribbean are steering them in that direction.   It would make it a very easy decision for the DW and I if they choose Royal -- we would say thanks, but no thanks.

We have B2B in September on Seascape and we've been to every port at least once and at this point our plan is to walk around the port area for a while but be back on board by lunch.

Also agree with your Royal Caribbean “feelings.” I am surprised the younger set would choose Royal. These days we cruise between MSC and Carnival, enjoy the different experiences of both.

If you look at all the different things to do on the Royal mega ships, it's easy to understand why my daughter thinks the kids would be less bored.  Knowing my grandson - a lounger, beer, and pizza are all he really needs, especially if he brings his girlfriend on the cruise with him.

Anyway, I have provided my input and am now going to just stay out of the decision making process.

Oh yes, forgot about those Royal mega-ships, altho I would think many of the activities appeal to younger kids.

MSC has those “all in” prices which include beverages and Wi-Fi, like them.
Understand “providing input” and then letting it alone. Sounds like you are better at it than me,Ha!
