We were on the 2014 World Cruise on the Amsterdam. When we were due

to get off we would have 516 days. They had the medallion awards ceremony

and we thought we would get the Gold medal for our days. "No can do"

they said. You must have 500 days at the time of the ceremony, they said.

We were not happy but that is their rule. We have always read that bonus

points could be received by purchases of $300 for each day, which applies

to the total days, we thought. Well that seems to be bogus. We were going

to book a small cruise, to finally get the medallion. Also we talked about

taking the 2016 World. We e-mailed the Mariner Society to confirm that

we were going to get the medal. We received the following: You currently

have 462 cruise and tour days and 516 total days credits including on board

spending days and suite days. Currently, you are 38 days away from receiving

the Gold Medallion" What happened to the 516 days?

It seems that you need pure sea days! Anyone have this problem?

To the best of my knowledge "medals" are presented for actual days at sea.

Mariner status is gained by days at sea and accumulated bonus points for on-board spending.

On the other hand, you could be happy about how the circumstances of your life have allowed you to enjoy 500 days of cruising. This would be far more significant to me than a medallion.

I would also add that no medallion has any meaning if one can simply buy credits toward the accomplishment.

I heard the medallion and $2.00 gets you a ride on the New York City subway.

I so agree. Sorry, but all of this stuff is the "feel good" spend more money with us kind of stuff. EVen with a medallion you still need to pay for your cruise!

Good you communicated directly with Mariners Society. What they wrote back to you about the Mariner Medallion Program is the way it has always been...... Medallions are awarded predicated on actual days aboard (and Alaska land tour).

The Mariner Star Program bases level on actual days aboard + 1 day for each $300 spent + double days for being in Suite.

The two Programs run concurrently but each has its own terms.

How wonderful you got to enjoy a World Cruise.

You are 5-star based on the 516 cruise-days you have accumulated while having spent 462 actual days on HAL cruises and cruise tours, you are 38 days of actual sailing days short of a gold medallion.

This may help understand the programs.

The medallion programs have always been based on actual number of days sailed. Don't know when it started or if there were any perks beyond the award.

The Mariner Star program was started a few years ago. Perks were included based on how many stars you had, which were based on the number of days sailed, the cabin type you booked (double for suites), and dollars spent for most on-board purchases, shore excursions, etc. (including anything pre-booked and prepaid). Pins are awarded at each level, 2 and above.

When the Mariner Star program was implemented, it was supposed to replace the medallions program. Many people protested so HAL kept both.

I think the one exception to ACTUAL SAILING DAYS is that land days on an Alaska cruise tour also count.
That's true now, but was not the case when the Star program started. We got the credit for them a couple of years later.

The current Medallion Program was introduced in summer, 1998. This was a revamp of the preceding program which was:

Able Mariner 3 cruises completed

Cadet Mariner 5 cruises completed

Grand Mariner 10 cruises completed

A certificate was presented to all who achieved those levels.

In addition, there were Medallions as follows:

40,000 cruise miles (115 days) - Silver Medallion

100,000 cruise miles (285 days) - Gold Medallion

250,000 cruise miles (713 days) - Platinum Medallion

When the new program started, DH and I held 115 day Silver Medallions. At the first Mariners Party we attended after the start of the new Program, we were presented a Copper Medallion (100 days). We had been demoted. :D

They lowered us from being silver to then being a lower level.

So sorry that you were not aware that these are two different programs.. I agree it can be confusing..

For all medals it has always been actual days sailed even when they first initiated the Star Mariner Program, a completely different program..

However, your star status is worth quite a few nice perks & is so much more important than a gold medallion which is only worn to the Mariner luncheons:) .. I would rather have the perks than the medallion.. ;) Several years ago we had a long discussion about the two programs on Cruise Critic.. If I can find the URL I'll post it for you.. It took many of us a long time before we were able to accept this.. LOL

In the meantime you will just have to book the WC cruise in order to increase your days for your medal's. & plan on getting the medallion on the following cruise..
