Two deaths on Anthem

Would it be unusual to have 2 people in a small town of 5000 people pass on the same day both of natural causes....probably not. In fact on a cruise ship where the average age is most likely higher than your average town the odds are probably higher that it will happen.

I believe from my questionable memory on the OASIS all access tour they mentioned their morque holds 2 bodies, and they have had to find alternate storage more than once.

That story is a bit of a mess. First, most of what was in the story has nothing to do with the deaths and second, deaths happen all the time on cruise ships. The article even points to natural causes. It's also not clear what one had to do with the other.

The Anthem is fine and I'm tired of people saying it's "weird" or "cursed" or whatever. We were on in April and absolutely nothing happened. There have been a lot more normal trips on that ship than problem ones, but people always focus on the different. It's just a ship that sails out of the northeast where the weather is never perfect.

So, two middle-aged men died on a cruise ship. It happens. Probably stroke or heart attack. Nothing to see here.

As for the hotel comment, I do not get that. Anthem just makes a port stop there and doesn't stay overnight. I also don't get why this is news as there are deaths on cruise ships regularly.

As others have said, sad, but hardly unusual.

I agree with you 100%. I read posts saying the ship is cursed, and I truly wonder if we have evolved at all since we lived in caves. Either that or the education system is really messed up. Or both of those could be true.:D;)

Coincidences and bad luck ships, try the Brilliance. We took a 12 nite Medit. cruise in Aug. '07 and had 3 different incidences in one day/night. The ship while in Rome/Civitavecchia, was hit by a small tornado and broke the lines at its mooring and the gangplanks fell in the water (TG no on at that time). Ship had no power and was free floating and headed towards another RCL ship that was docked across. Good thing there was a large ferry that basically slowed the Brilliance until it got back to power.

That very night right after early dinner, we were maybe a little over an hour from shore and heard "Oscar Oscar" (? man overboard) and saw crew members scurrying in all directions and looking into the water. We looked over the rails and saw many lights in the water (life jackets, etc.) After a while there were more than a dozen ships helping in the search. Saw a Carnival ship helping in the search. The Captain could not get a true confirmation and ordered all Pax to their cabins, so that they could have a better handle. Our cabin was interviewed some 3 times to be sure. The search went on for some 8 hours and we saw a lot of activity from our balcony cabin. Finally, I went to bed. My wife told me in the AM that our cabin steward, in one of the searches wanted my wife to wake me up so that I could be accounted. It was a long night. A funny incident in that the we wanted to e-mail our kids and tried to sneak from our cabin, but we were sternly told by crewmembers on either side of the hallway to stay in our cabin.

Ps. It was a false alarm. The conclusion was that someone had left a shirt on one of the lounge chairs and flew into the water. A Pax saw something and triggered the alarm.

Also, while the search was going on, there was another announcement and a elderly Pax had a heart attack at the late seating.

By the way, the Brilliance, if you recall, was involved in the case where the newlywed husband, was either pushed overboard by Russians, and his new bride either drunk or sleeping with the casino manager. The irony of this situation was that she sued RCL and settled out of court for $250k (?) LOL

So coincidences and bad luck can occur at any time and on any ship.

I recall from a TV video on Oasis that it was mentioned that the morgue had a 10 person capacity.

Here is a CC article on the subject relative to cruise lines in general.

My condolences to the families who lost loved ones. No matter the reason or age, the loss of a loved one is never easy to accept.

As for the ship, good lord folks it isn't the Flying Dutchman. You know, the legendary ghost ship that can never make port and is doomed to sail the oceans forever. Ship happens, and for whatever reason Anthem has just had a bit more ship than others, in this last year.

I'd sail on Anthem without thinking twice. I also walk under ladders, step on cracks, find 13 to be a lucky number, don't throw salt over my shoulder, black cats can walk in my path, and I don't even have a rabbit's foot. It is only a big deal if you think it is a big deal.

Apparently RCI thinks it is enough of a big deal to not have a deck 13 on the Oasis class ships.;):D

that's not a really good stat at all.

i believe it was estimated that there are rouhgly 200 deaths on cruises a year for about 19-24 million total passengers.

you have a better chance of getting struck by lightning

2 on the same boat is even more rare. like hitting the state lotto rare

I tend to suspect that the number is higher judging from conversations that I have had with ships' physicians.

The only thing that seems strange to me is that the two couples were traveling together and both men passed the same day. What are the chances of that happening?

Where does it say they were traveling together? That would be nowhere at all in the article.

The few articles about this incident alludes to it but is very unclear. I assumed they weren't together but others believe they were.

Can't be sure until they release more information or state where the other couple was from. One couple was from NJ

I got this alert when I woke up 20 minutes ago of 2 dead on Anthem but no details. Very incomplete, Does this have anything to do with the ship? Anyone with more info?

Previously reported on another thread a couple of days ago. Appear to be natural causes based on that also incomplete story. You'll never hear about most shipboard natural deaths, but since there were two so close together, apparently someone felt the need to report it.

Here's the other thread: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2428031

Also, the story you posted mentions the child who drowned in July which has nothing to do with the story itself.

Ok, I had no idea, thank you. A few days ago and I got the alert this morning. I hate when that happens. Thanks for clearing that up.

I am on Anthem now. Nobody on board talking about this. We did get the alpha-alpha-alpha emergency call about 2AM a few nights ago with a room on deck 7 being the focus. Maybe that was it?

Interesting, thanks for the update.

We were talking about it a few days ago but not anymore. The were 3 alpha, alpha, alpha calls 3 days in a row that woke many up but we heard about the deaths after our 1st stop when we read in online or our friends in ny emailed us. Everybody just enjoying the cruise.

Thanks for the link. I came across the news in a previous thread but just knew of identity and circumstances in your link.

I would guess that it was natural causes. There doesn't seem to be any investigation. The man from NJ is already being buried on Monday, and the man from PA on Wednesday, before their cruise even returns on Friday.

In any case its a very sad story. I feel bad for the families involved.

Wasn't this cruise a close looped cruise from Bayonne, NJ? Why would they be staying in a hotel in Puerto Rico? They are only there for a few hours. That is what is confusing. That was also reported in the other thread.

I wouldn't worry about that. Most likely the original news story had this error in it and it just got repeated. Happens all the time.
