Norwegian Escape - Smoke issue still there?

I've seen a bunch of posts on this, but haven't been able to find anything definitive. Apparently NCL was changing their smoking policy and adding a closed off smoking area inside the casino (with the majority of the casino being non-smoking). Has this been completely implemented and is the main part of the casino now non-smoking? Is the 6-7-8 smoke issue resolved? I'm a non-smoker and I've always hated the smoke, would love to hear that this is changed for the better now!

Thanks, and sorry if this is covered definitively in a thread somewhere already.

Our friends just got back from being on the Escape a couple of weeks ago and they complained of cigarette smoke smell in the 678 Atrium. So no, it's not completely eliminated.

I've never been on a NCL ship, and neither had they, but it was one thing they mentioned specifically without us asking about it. If this is supposedly improved versus the previous similar class ships, it really must have been a serious problem before (for us non-smokers).

I do know that they are very sensitive to the smell of cigarette smoke (as are we), so take that into account.

Having said that, we are booked on the Escape for next Nov, and they said they would cruise the same ship again.

You are referring to the words of Frank DelRio, as seen here... http://www.travelweekly.com/Cruise-Travel/Norwegian-Escape-casino-to-have-nonsmoking-area

Answer: NO. I has not been addressed, and has not been implemented.

When asked this question directly in multiple web conferences recently, direct emails, etc. NCL will divert the question or flat out ignore it.

Andy Stuart does the same thing, yet he too discussed the opportunistic outlook for it in the past. http://cruisefever.net/1029-norwegians-newest-mega-ship-to-have-separate-smoking-area-in-casino/ . Requests will go unanswered. The question was posed again during the unveiling of Harvest Cay, and went unanswered.

I guess it's what you make it. I am one of those ex smokers who find smoke now gross. I went on the Getaway and had heard how terrible it was. I was actually pleasantly surprised at how little the smoke bothered me. I spent many hours in the casino as well.

And that is because all the higher ups in NCL know that the really money in the casino is generated by the smoking side of the casino.

It stands to reason that you will smell smoke when around smoking areas. If you let it bother you, it will bother you. If you don't, it won't. As an ex-smoker who currently can't stand the smell, it hasn't bothered me the slightest bit on either of our Escape cruises. If someone mentions it, I notice. If they don't, I don't.

Smoke has never been a problem on the Escape.

I beg to differ, I was on the Escape back in August/September and the stench of smoke was so horrible, we couldn't even eat in the French restaurant without smelling it. The smell probably varies between sailings based on the population of smokers, but to say it has never been a problem is absolutely not true. Maybe it isn't a problem for you, but it was certainly a problem for us.

It will vary from cruise to cruise, but there is definitely still an issue. On our cruise, we found that if we avoided that deck other than late evenings when the casino seemed more crowded, it wasn't too bad. You could occasionally smell it on 8 but 6 was pretty clear.

That said, if we had a relatively low smoker population it wouldn't take much to make it much much worse in that area, as it seemed the air system could just about handle what was there.

Just off of the Escape yesterday and there is very much a smoke problem. The whole 678 3 story atrium stinks of cigarette smell. Very disappointing.

Agreed. The worst part is trying to eat dinner at Le Bistro and smelling it.

I sent an email inquiry about this months ago and was given the runaround.

In the meantime, NCL needs to ban smoking in its casinos, at least on the newer ships. The ship's design doesn't make the smoke containable. It's quite silly to let this problem linger. It's an unfortunate conundrum NCL has, but it's the company's fault and stems from a critical design flaw in the ships.

Lets be very clear. This will not happen. It's been tried and generally results in a staggering drop in casino usage.

Realistically, until structural changes can be made at a drydock, this is not going to change...

I was on the same cruise and didn't notice smoking. It was the best ship I've been on in that regard.

It's been tried and the results are generally staggering drops? On what cruise ships did these trials occur?

Carnival Paradisw tried it - Quickly rescinded

Revel tried it - Quickly went bankrupt

Harrah's New Orleans revenue dropped

All Illinois casinos revenue dropped

All Colorado casinos revenue dropped

Macau gambling dropped 37% after smoking ban

I asked....on what cruise ships. Common sense says a cruise ship casino with a captive audience is not the same as a land based casino where people can go somewhere else to gamble.

As for Paradise, that was not a casino experimentation. That was a whole ship experimentation at a time when smoking rates were about 10% higher than they are today. Plus, Carnival struggled with maintaining a 100% non smoking crew.

So again I ask, on what cruise ships did they trial non-smoking casinos and they failed?

Because all I've seen so far are successes with Celebrity, and now HAL.
