Jaylie Posted October 3, 2016 #1 Share Posted October 3, 2016 I read somewhere that there were a lot of dogs wandering around Key West. Does anyone know anything about that. Our cruise to the Bahamas on Infinity departs in a few weeks and I'm traveling with someone who is very afraid of dogs!
dd likes to cruise Posted October 3, 2016 #2 Share Posted October 3, 2016 I was on Key West last December on a cruise and don't recall seeing any loose dogs.
Cruzaholic41 Posted October 3, 2016 #3 Share Posted October 3, 2016 Not true at all. A lot of people own dogs and take them everywhere in KW. It's a very dog friendly town. But it's not like there are strays running around.
royalcruz Posted October 3, 2016 #4 Share Posted October 3, 2016 I've been to Key West about 20 times and don't recall seeing stray dogs. There are a lot of outdoor cats though. Your friend shouldn't go to Grand Turk. There are dogs everywhere...they are mutts that all look the same...I was told that they belong to people and guard their homes but they live outdoors unleashed...I've never seen anything like it. Texasnee Posted October 3, 2016 #5 Share Posted October 3, 2016 Don't recall any loose dogs but saw lots of chickens walking around! Seriously. Love Key West! Sent from my iPad using Forums
andersons68 Posted October 3, 2016 #6 Share Posted October 3, 2016 Chickens and cats roam the town. The dogs tend to be with their people. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
Rare chemmo Posted October 3, 2016 #7 Share Posted October 3, 2016 Only dog off a lead we saw was performing during the sunset celebrations, and he was upstaged by some performing cats....Could only happen in Key West! If your friend is really apprehensive perhaps a full circuit around the town on the little tram would be a good start. As others have said, a great, safe tourist stop. simplelife Posted October 3, 2016 #8 Share Posted October 3, 2016 Did not see stray dogs in my 3 times there (one for a several-day stay where we walked the whole downtown area). Lots of chickens roaming around though. Sent from my iPad using Forums
Jane2357 Posted October 3, 2016 #9 Share Posted October 3, 2016 Dogs are not roaming loose in Key West. I'm there often and sister lives right in downtown near cruise terminal - your friend has no worries.
Aquahound Posted October 3, 2016 #10 Share Posted October 3, 2016 I just left Key West after living there for almost 20 years. No, feral dogs are not wandering around the city. But like someone else said, it is a dog friendly town, so many locals do walk around with them and take them into bars.

Aquahound Posted October 4, 2016 #14 Share Posted October 4, 2016 Don't know how the dog rumor got started! My guess is it started with the fact many locals do walk around with their dogs. Even bums have dogs and use them in street/sidewalk acts. The story probably got lost in translation and turned into a stray problem.

OCruisers Posted October 16, 2016 #16 Share Posted October 16, 2016 Key West is very pet friendly but there are no stray dogs running round. They are on leashes with their people. Lots chickens and cats roam around freely.
Rare Hlitner Posted October 16, 2016 #17 Share Posted October 16, 2016 During our many vacations in Key West we do not recall ever seeing a stray dog. The chickens, on the other hand, can have nasty dispositions. By the way, the fear of dogs is called Cynophobia and can be treated by mental health professionals. Rare Hlitner Posted October 18, 2016 #19 Share Posted October 18, 2016 Gosh, I totally HATE all of those chickens! :mad:LuLu Ahhh so you have a classic case of Alektorophobia. That is a problem in Key West :). Hank
OCruisers Posted October 18, 2016 #20 Share Posted October 18, 2016 (edited) Ahhh so you have a classic case of Alektorophobia. That is a problem in Key West :).Hank Probably so :o .... but I have no fear of spiders & snakes and will happily hold an iguana. :) To get back on topic ... Dogs aren't roaming around in packs and are with their owners. No reason to worry about a dog just coming up to scare anyone.
