Reasons for why you cruise?

In reading a lot of recent posts lately on here mainly the complainers...I have a very simple question why do you cruise? seems to me the majority of complaining is about the food. so I am going to assume that is a big reason that is very important. if that is the case save a lot of money and just go to 5 star restaurants! for me food is a small factor on a cruise....I can eat good at home....there are so many more things way more important than the food. but it seems that if food is marginal the cruise is bad! why?

Interesting question, in that I've never thought deeply about it. For me I guess it's several things:

  • Ability to REALLY relax. I'm still working and need that occasional relaxation to keep me sane.
  • Ability to see a mix of different locations/cultures in one trip (although the ports admittedly don't completely represent the local culture)
  • Ability for everyone in my family to do what they enjoy...sometimes together as a family and sometimes separately.

The dining experience IS important to me as my family rarely can eat together anymore (college, extracurricular activities, etc.). Food is a part of that dining experience. We aren't foodies so above average food is fine for us. I completely understand how food can be more important than that for others in THEIR dining experience.

I cruise for several reasons. To name a few I would say

I don't have to talk on the phone

I don't have to drive

I like it

I like land based vacations too. There are not many places I won't go and things I wouldn't try. But, I'm now in my 50's - and I don't have the time to focus on one island at a time - getting immersed in local culture. A cruise will afford me the opportunity to sample things quickly and cover a lot of ground - I'm not in my 20s anymore!

My husbands and I also have stressful, demanding jobs - and a cruise forces you to unplug and remove yourself mentally and physically from your home "normal".

I am not an experienced cruiser - one done and one coming up - but I don't anticipate that we will stop, we'll keep going.

i hate to fly so thats my number one reason, lol

i also think you get a good bang for your buck cruising as well (i have the ability to cruise last minute alot and always come across good deals), i have two children and theres lot of stuff for them to keep busy.

ill side with others, i am not a huge fan of the food in the MDR which is why we hit specialty restaurants at least half the nights on the cruise, i don't mind paying for the up charge as i have always gotten a pretty good product and great service. i know that going into a cruise im not going to be WOWed by the food in the MDR.

i also live 30 - 40 mins from bayonne (and prob 3 hours from balto) so its very easy for me to hope on a cruise out of there..

i also like trying different locations, even when we do a 3 day bermuda cruise by day 3 im ready to go somewhere else so i like switching it up

The sea, wind, surf, eats/drinks, destinations, no unpacking/packing to vist multiple spots. Basically to chill out.

On another note,

if I don't like the food, I don't complain, I just request to send it back and re-order something else.

if I don't like the entertainment, I don't complain, I get up and leave.

If I don't like the chair hogs, after 30 mins of no one there, I notify the RCL staff and have them move the towel and then sit down.

Vacations are too short to sweat the small stuff.

I TOTALLY agree with you. After the daily grind of every day life, it is so great to just relax and let someone wait on me for a change . As far as the food, that is the least of why I cruise.

Any time someone cooks for me and cleans up after me, I am a happy girl. I can always find something to eat and I am probably the pickiest eater on the planet--LOL.

Just love the whole cruising experience, from A to Z.

I could care less about the food, I'm not a big foodie and I don't eat very much so if the food sucks, well...that sucks, but I can always find something worth eating that will fill me up. I like to cruise because it gives you a chance to see a lot of islands in a short period of time and gives me an idea of where I might like to go for a land vacation. It's also a lot cheaper than a land vacation. There's a large variety of things to do so everyone on the trip can pick and choose what they enjoy without having to be pulled in multiple directions.

So basically I cruise for the activities and the variety of beaches, the warm weather, and the fun. I like when food tastes good, but I don't require many calories to survive so i wouldn't bother picking a cruise line for it's food. I'm also the person in charge of cooking at home, so I'm just beyond happy when I don't have to cook, nobody is asking me "what's for dinner?" And if anyone is complaining that there's nothing good to eat, it's not my problem :)

I like going to different places without having to fly to each one, I look at the cruise as a sampler in some ways, if I really like a place I can see about going back for a land based vacation. Also like the opportunity to really get away, if I don't want internet no one will find me,

Food is a plus but I am not that picky and if I'm not cooking it it will always be better.

I can't think of anything I find more relaxing than sitting on my balcony watching the ocean go by. For me the ship's the destination.

I use a wheelchair full time, and cruising is a the best way to vacation I've found, without having to worry about getting in and out of the car every day.

For me, a cruise is the total vacation package....... there's entertainment, pools, food, games, spas, casino, bars, and so much more all within walking distance. And, new places to see and experience most every day, how can you beat that? :D

I have a husband, and four kids and cruising is just relaxing/or adventurous, and something to escape reality. I don't have to do laundry, talk on the phone and hear problems, here my kids say "mom, can I go here or there, or worry about kids homework," or hear my husbands problems regarding work, etc. As far as the food goes, I'm not picky AT ALL, I'm happy w/ a bowl of cereal for supper and popcorn for a snack, but when I pay 1600pp on the Oasis, I want the food to be good.

We are a family of 5, hubby and I in our 40's with 3 girls, ages 10, 10, and 12. We just started cruising and totally choose the cruise based on itinerary. It's a great way to see so many different parts of the world and experience fun things and make great family memories. We're not opposed to trying any cruise line if it will take us to a great place.

I cruise because...

I love the ocean.

We love to fully unplug. Our phones spend a cruise in the cabin safe. We don't pay for wireless or any of that.

We like seeing multiple destinations in a week.

So many food, drink, and entertainment options!

I need warm memories to sustain me through New England winters!

I cruise because I was recently medically retired and have to much time on my hands now. My husband cruises because he loves the Flow rider, no cell service and we both like to wake up to different islands every morning! We also enjoy the Diamond Lounge and hanging out with our cruise friends!
