Rare albingirl Posted April 9, 2018 #1 Share Posted April 9, 2018 So, let's say I have a service parrot who comforts me in times of stress. Do you think Holland America will let him board with me? He does have a bit of a salty tongue.
kwb101 Posted April 9, 2018 #2 Share Posted April 9, 2018 From "Know Before You Go" (January 2018, p6): PETS With the exception of qualified service animals for guests with disabilities, animals or pets are not allowed on board our ships. If you plan to bring a service animal, you must call our Access & Compliance Department. (For contact information, please see page 9.) You will need to provide health certificate documentation for the animal in your ports of call. From p5 (same document): Access & Compliance Department Phone: 1-800-547-8493 (locally at 1-206-626-7044) TTY: 1-800-254-8669 Email: halw_access@hollandamerica.com
Rare 3rdGenCunarder Posted April 9, 2018 #3 Share Posted April 9, 2018 Keep the cage covered when you and the parrot are out and about on the ship. Covering the cage usually keeps birds quiet. Or if you don't carry the parrot in its cage, get it one of those hoods falconers use to calm their birds. (I don't think you can gag a bird...) And shame on you for the language you let it learn!!!! ithaca gal Posted April 9, 2018 #13 Share Posted April 9, 2018 According to the ADA... To determine if an animal is a service animal, you may ask two questions: Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability? What work or task has the dog been trained to perform? Well .............. Substituting just two words makes this easy. "Is the parrot a service animal required because of an INABILITY (to tell fellow passengers off)?" "What work or task has the parrot been trained to perform? The parrot has been trained to say "No jeans on Gala Night! Wear your robe in your room!" jkrislc Posted April 9, 2018 #24 Share Posted April 9, 2018 I know this is a joke, but it is important to differentiate between a comfort and service animal. Comfort animals are not allowed, while service animals are according to the American with Disabilities Act (ADA). That said, ADA does not allow for documentation to be requested or that the animal demonstrate any level of training. https://www.ada.gov/regs2010/service_animal_qa.html
Rare albingirl Posted April 9, 2018 Author #25 Share Posted April 9, 2018 That is correct. I only need to show my doctor's prescription, which is totally legitimate, and no one can question my service parrot. He is cute, by the way.
