Arrest on Adventure this Morning?

While we were leaving our cabin this morning at 7am to eat breakfast before leaving the ship to come home, we ran into a little excitement in the hallway. A few cabins down from us had a visit from four officers with a dog with them. The person from the cabin was out in the hall with the dog and two of the officers while the other two were searching his cabin. We were on Deck 9. Does anybody know anything else?

On one cruise our ship stopped in Jamaica before going to Grand Cayman. They made several announcements about being careful what you buy in Jamaica. A threesome did not listen and the crew became aware of the situation. The ship called ahead to GC and when we docked the dog came onboard and the threesome got a vacation courtesy of the Cayman police.

It is possible that on your cruise the crew figured out that something was not right and the ship informed the authorities prior to docking.

When the luggage gets unloaded and it is waiting in the terminal before the passengers start leaving the ship - isn't it the time that the dogs get to do their job ? If they smell something - it would be easy to find which cabin the luggage came from.

...or they can be arrested at the time of the violation and escorted off the ship then.

The saddest thing I have ever seen on a cruise was four college students standing at one end of the Guest Relations counter with their baggage nearby with several ship's Security Officers with them. One of the girls was talking on the phone.

I was told that they had been caught with drugs and were being put off the ship.

They were each being allowed to call their parents using the ship's phone.

When we debarked Serenade in San Juan this past Saturday, the dog was sniffing the luggage when we were standing in line for Customs. The dog suspected something in the luggage of the people in front of us in the lineup and the officer marked their Customs card in red and they were pulled into a side room for a luggage inspection.

Our porter told us the dogs were sniffing for fruit, meat, etc... the forbidden food stuff that you're not supposed to take off the ship. I'd always thought the dogs were used for sniffing out drugs only.

That would explain why they were using a basset hound! I took note of that dog and thought that was a different choice to use. I have seen other sporting dogs, but the bassett did catch my attention.

Dogs have tremendous noses and can be trained to smell just about anything. A Bassett however, just did not appear on my radar screen until then.

One of my bags did not want to come to my cabin on the Jewel last week, though it's

little sister made it by the time we were able to get into our cabin.

Figuring what happened...I went down to the "naughty room" to wait in line. The line

got much worse after that, so good thing I did not wait to get "the call" before getting

in line.

Sure enough...they found my dozen wire clothes hangers.  Sheeez..

"You are allowed to take your bag now, Madam". Huh???!! Kind of obvious

what they were, and in fact they got a chuckle out of that "contraband" they allowed

me to carry back to my cabin.

Do they have "hanger sniffing" dogs too?? ;)

When my son and I got off the Monarch last April, I was in front wheeling one bag and he was behind me wheeling the other. Customs dog came by and I went right by him. Turned to say something to my son and the dog had stopped him and was sniffing the suitcase. I think he was smelling my cat who lays on that suitcase in my closet.....

We had a funny dog sniffing experience too... We were in Johannesburg OR Tambo airport during the World Cup, and my teen girls had loaded up on snacks in their bags for the 16 hour flight home. Security was obviously very tight, and a little drug sniffing beagle stopped at their bags and sniffed, he kept on sniffing and sniffing, and I started to panic:eek:

Then the officer handling the little dog laughed, tugged his leash and said " you must have food in there"! I guess he has a different "tell" for contraband, (thank God!) but he was just like all the beagles I've known and couldn't really resist food!;)

From what I know about dogs and their sense of smell, that could be possible, but I would think their false positive hit rate might make that a less than practical think to use dogs for.

My weiner dog can smell the smallest speck of any food from four rooms over.

Its possible, but their training is impressive. Among the many shows I've watched, (yes my only practical knowledge on this TV ;) ) Mythbusters did a special on this and they tried to trick the dogs as much as possible and one of the ways was to put cat smells on other bags as a distraction. Now I make several mistakes at work a week, so its possible a dog might make one as well, but the way they found things was amazing.
