msmoger Posted September 28, 2017 #4 Share Posted September 28, 2017 They're certainly adding a "boatload" of technology. There were scores of technicians working all over the Regal during our TA. I certainly hope the internet speeds improve with the addition of the Medallion technology. It was painfully slow.
Steelers36 Posted September 28, 2017 #5 Share Posted September 28, 2017 WOO HOO!! I just wonder how long it will take to roll it all out. They already did WiFi upgrades throughout, but I think it was mostly more access points. Looking forward to "real" internet one day.
Potstech Posted September 28, 2017 #6 Share Posted September 28, 2017 Wonder what the price increase will be once it is all installed? Improvements mean costlier service.
beg3yrs Posted September 28, 2017 #7 Share Posted September 28, 2017 Wonder what the price increase will be once it is all installed? Improvements mean costlier service. I am wondering the same thing. Will they switch from a per-minute billing to a per-gigabyte system? What will happen to the Platinum and Elite allocations? People want to know! antsp Posted September 28, 2017 #9 Share Posted September 28, 2017 Princess internet is so outdated you can't believe it. My sister is currently onboard harmony of the seas, she has just video called me from the royal promenade whilst at sea and had a 15 minute call. Cost $3 a day. satxdiver Posted September 29, 2017 #10 Share Posted September 29, 2017 WiFi and the internet is continuing to creep into our lives on a daily basis (hourly?). It is nice to hear that Carnival Corp is going to modernize all their 100+ ships for a more robust WiFi offering. The upgrading of Princess to the Medallion concept will fit in nicely with this announcement by Carnival Corp. All I can say is it is about time! peety3 Posted October 2, 2017 #12 Share Posted October 2, 2017 They could install an access point in every cabin, and every 20' in every hallway, and the Internet will still be slow. Until there's a viable low-earth-orbit satellite system, there's no way around high latency of geosynchronous satellites.
beg3yrs Posted October 2, 2017 #13 Share Posted October 2, 2017 They could install an access point in every cabin, and every 20' in every hallway, and the Internet will still be slow. Until there's a viable low-earth-orbit satellite system, there's no way around high latency of geosynchronous satellites. The SES system uses both GEO and MEO satellites. That's a step in the right direction.
UpcountryTravelers Posted October 4, 2017 #14 Share Posted October 4, 2017 Not getting excited yet. The article does not say which division of Carnival Corp will get this. I would guess that Carnival Division will be first, as that division is aimed at the young cruisers who are most connected to their internet. IECalCruiser Posted October 4, 2017 #15 Share Posted October 4, 2017 Improved internet on CCL ships has been discussed before with three different daily charges for different levels of service. As I seem to remember, the lowest level gave texting capability and social media access, the second full internet access and the third the ability to stream video. Medallion Net sounds like it would be part of the Ocean Medallion cruises so one can hope. Sent from my iPad using Forums
