Many thanks for posting the beer pictures.

Showed them to DH and he spotted his favourite beer and he said he hopes they have plenty on board for our cruise.

DH is now looking forward to the cruise as much as me :D

we were on Silhouette in April and DH was not overly impressed with the actual selection in Michaels--maybe it has increased!

the place was very empty, so beer lovers will rejoice in finding a nice quiet spot ... new decor was nice--missed the more traditional clubbiness & elegant decor of Michaels on other ships... but times they are a changing or so I am told!!!

This is slightly off-topic, but really amusing (to me). I was looking at a menu for a local restaurant we're thinking of trying tonight, and one of the entrees is "Chimay braised short ribs"...not being a beer afficianado, I made a mental note to look up what "Chimay" was...a wine? A spice?

Thanks to CC I now know it's a beer!

After living in Belgium for 3 years, we now have a cat called Chimay! My husband has his own brewery at home now, so is looking forward to having those beers on tap for 2 weeks, although he has tried most of them. I hope they have the full range avalable on the Summit.

I am hopeful, but not likely to find, non pasturized European beers and ales. Many of these offerings are sold in the US, but they are processed so they don't taste the same.

The second concern is that good beer has a shelf life and must be stored correctly...not just on a shelf in Michaels.

My biggest disappointment with Michael's club on our Novemeber Silhouette cruise wasn't the beers they sell.

It was the fact that they didn't open until 5 PM. We had alot of sea days and it would have been nice to have a beer there in the afternoon.

At 5 PM we are usually getting ready for dinner, then going to dinner, then the show and then the Martini bar.

Even on Saturday and Sunday afternoon when there were football games on TV Michael's club was closed. We were at sea so we went to the bar in the casino to watch the games.

Curious;

Did you ask why they opened so late.....

I'm not sure if I asked why they opened so late but I know I mentioned to several people that worked on the ship that it would be better if they opened earlier and I also wrote it on the comment card.

I hope the hours are adjusted! I'm on the Millie in October to Hawaii with many sea days. I want to enjoy my quality beers throughout the day and not just at night!

That's exactly how I felt. We were on the ship alot during the day and that is mainly when I wanted beer. In the evening I did wine with dinner, Amaretto on the rocks during the show and then a martini after the show.

One thing you can do is get bottles of beer in the evening; not have them open it and put it in the fridge in your cabin for when you want it during the day. You can only get one beer at a time if you are using the beverage package. I had the premium alcohol package. I did this once but was usually too busy in the evening to go back and do it again.

I never thought I would say this about anything sold on a cruise ship...

...But, $5 for a Leffe Blond is very good value. It costs more than that in most Belgian pubs I have been to - and I have been to a lot :p

It has taken a lot of talking by people and posting on these boards for RCl/celebrity to accept craft beers . Now we need to do the same to get them to open Michaels early or make the beer available through the day. On my last two. Rcl sailing I was able to get a bottle of chimay blue delivered to dinner each night by asking......no matter where I dined...

They do listen

When were on the Millennium last month, they opened at 7 pm. If you walked in at 6:30, sometimes they'd take pity on you and serve you anyway. DH loved the place, but it was empty most of the time.IMG_0279.jpg

I would buy a couple of beers and have them NOT open them and take back to cabin(this does mean you need to bring a bottle opener, which I do). I always ask the cabin steward to remove all the cokes/beers in the frig so I can put 2-3 cans of Boddington's in there along with DW's Grey Goose bottle. Sometimes you have to work around anti customer rules. Good news is that you can at least get good craft beers.

I would like to see some good DRAFT beers onboard. :)

There's usually a can opener just inside the bathroom door.

  • 2 months later...

Just off Summit and it looked like the same menu as posted for Silhouette. DH took lots of pics so I will post some here this weekend.

We both thought this was a much better use of the space on Summit than the piano/whiskey bar but it still needed some tweaking. The entertainment was rather "one note" (pun intended).

Other than the excellent performance by guest entertainer Doug Cameron who did a session with the X Orchestra, the entertainer every night was Andrew Halpin, a solo guitarist/vocalist. We really liked him the first night (sounded a lot like james Taylor) but he had a limited repertoire and after hearing "fly me to the Moon" 3 times, I'd had enough!! More varied entertainment would definitely bring more people into Michaels. Celebrity needs to market this venue more as a lot of people walked in amd were surprised at the concept. Even without the Elite function, it didnt open until 6 or 7 pm.

DHs only complaint was that all the beers were served in chilled glasses. They were short on staff too (which seemed to be a frequent issue in that ship) with ine bartender and sometimes a waitress. Lovely people but if it got busy, they were overwhelmed.

What is the problem with chilled glasses? I love my beer but don't consider myself an aficionado, & love a chilled glass. What am I missing?

According to DH (who is a homebrewer and major beer geek:)) only certain types of beer should be ice cold (lagers, kolschs, etc.) Stouts, ales, etc. shouldn't be chilled for best flavor.

I agree. On our sailing we were the only patrons in there until the last night when they showed a hockey game then there were about 10 or so. People would causually stroll in throughout the night but they never stayed long. The bartender was a fantastic guy from Ireland. We really enjoyed conversating w/ him.

The music was on constant rotation. Like there was only one cd they played over and over again. But I liked all the songs so it didnt really bother me lol My husband did say a fantastic guitarist played one night, but I wasnt there. It must have been who you are talking about because my husband requested a song (I think moondance or something) and he didnt know how to play it.

None of these things affected our enjoyment of Michaels Club though. We enjoyed having the place, bartender, and beers :D all to ourselves. :)
