As the health and well-being of our guests and crew is of the utmost importance, Norwegian Cruise Line will institute changes to its smoking policy for all sailings on or after November 1, 2014. The specific changes prohibit smoking on stateroom balconies and limit smoking in the casino to players. On Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Breakaway, smoking on The Waterfront will be permitted on the starboard side, except by the outdoor dining areas. Public areas throughout all our ships are smoke-free. If you smoke regular or electronic cigarettes, you can do so in designated areas only. Guests in the Garden Villas may smoke in their private garden and on their private sun decks.

Public areas throughout all our ships are smoke-free. If you smoke regular or electronic cigarettes, you can do so in designated areas only. If you prefer pipes or cigars, you can smoke in the Cigar Bar or designated smoking lounge. Smoking cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars and pipes is permitted in outdoor public guest spaces and open decks where designated by the ship's management based on the ship's specific characteristics and arrangement. Smoking, including electronic cigarettes, is prohibited in or near venues serving food, the jogging track, outdoor sporting venues, The Haven outdoor areas and children's pool areas. On ships with The Waterfront, smoking is permitted on the starboard side excluding any food service areas. Active Casino players may smoke cigarettes in the Casino during gaming hours. Cigarette smoking is not permitted in any other indoor venue or location.

 

Guests are not permitted to smoke cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars or pipes in their staterooms or on their balconies. Cigar and pipe smoking in staterooms and on balconies is prohibited. Smoking inside your stateroom or on your balcony will result in a $250 cleaning charge added to your onboard account. If cigarette burns on furniture, linens, towels or carpeting are detected; guests will be advised and charged for the damages.

 

Electronic cigarettes cannot be used in public areas where there is a No Smoking policy in force; simply because these cigarettes look so realistic and therefore other guests' perception is that we are not enforcing the No Smoking rule.

this is a great thread; as mentioned in a previous post many of us non-smokers travel with smokers and it is very helpful in picking cabins relatively close to a smoking area.

I am almost certain that the GEM has an indoor cigar lounge, but wondering if cigar smoking is allowed at any of the outside bars?

 

Any cigar smokers who recently cruised on the GEM would know the answer?

Anyone know where the outside smoking areas are on the Dawn?

 

Pool deck port side, casino, cigar bar and deck 7 both sides. We got a balcony and rarely used it due to no smoking now. We used to be out there all the time. Will get an inside deck 12 next time and save a lot of money. Also deck 14 (Bimini bar) port side. Had lots of places to go and got a lot of exercise doing it.

Also, it looks like there's a public bathroom next to the cabin. Did you hear doors slamming, toilets flushing, etc?

On the Gem this past Feb it's deck 7 promenade, we stood by the railing and sat in chairs, no one said anything. Deck 13 both sides of the bar, we had quite the gathering every morning! Also the casino, we used this a few times due to high waves and outside venues were closed, also upset a few people.

Of course no one said anything, if you were in an area that was non-smoking then shame on you.

They do but people still smoke on their balconies. We just got off breakaway in Sunday and our neighbor smoked like a chimney the entire cruise.

People who smoke will continue to be rude thinking they have rights as well.

I am a smoker, but I will do what I need to do to comply. As long as I can go sit somewhere in the morning and have my morning drink with my smoke I will be good. My first cruise was on the Carnival Dream in Jan 2015.. The smoking deck was out of the way. Those that didn't smoke weren't forced to pass through the smokers. I hope that the Star is set up the same way. However, if it isn't..I will adapt.

Can anyone share the EPIC smoking areas? I'm probably going to smoke on the balcony while no one is around and if I get charged 250 I don't really care, but would like to know where the other options are so I can avoid that.

Going on the Jade soon - thanks for this - DH and I been non smokers for five years now - but we still use zero nicotine menthol ecigs - and enjoy them more so when we are drinking - seems madness we need to use smoking areas but hey ho - that's how it is.

Have to confess I can smell a whiff of a cigarette a mile off now - and as much as it stinks - I do MISS the people - There's nothing like the camaraderie of smokers corner :) The craic is always good - and many a lifelong friendship has been struck with a match .

Good to see NCL provides for both - but I would love to see a vaping area and bar -

Oh and we have used our ecigs in every cabin in every ship we have sailed in for the last five years - but we use menthol which has no aroma - I think some of the flavoured or tobacco style might? Just a thought -

Seeing more and more people vape now - It makes quitting a piece of cake!

While underway, you can smoke occasionally on the balcony. No one cares unless there are multiple smokers or you are running like a chimney. Just shut your balcony door and stay behind the dividers. Of course, don't smoke while you neighbor next door (down wind) is out unless they are cool with it.

 

If you do and get caught or reported you will be forced to pay a fine to deodorize your cabin ...its not worth the risk

Unless there is photo evidence, which would mean someone would have to reach a camera around your divider, it is your word against theirs. Unless you get multiple complaints from different parties, I would just deny. I mean use common sense, see where the wind is blowing, if someone is next to you and the wind is blowing that way, don't do it. Fact of the matter, it is a stupid anti smoking rule as is any which bans smoking in open air areas. So if you do get caught, it is a $250 fee, big deal after all the charges you pay anyhow. That also includes the state room, hell, I should just pay the fee upfront and enjoy smoking in my stateroom the whole cruise. I wouldn't do that, but if it is a one time fee, what is to stop someone from doing that?

I probably don't plan on doing it as I am not a huge smoker and I am hardly in the room to begin with, but it is a stupid rule for balconies and I am mostly curious.

It was in a review with pictures posted here on CC. The person who reported it and gave the review was above and the person who was smoking was below on an extended balcony (Getaway, iirc).

 

The reviewer even went into detail about how the smoker (when first confronted by staff) claimed to be "vaping" and not smoking. The staff left. The person who made the complaint then showed the phone pics. The staff took the phone pics and (I assume) blue-toothed them and printed them on the ships printer. When confronted by further evidence (smoking gun :p) the smoker was busted.

 

I clearly remember seeing the smoker (heavy-set woman) and the lit cigarette but I didn't save the pic.

 

The $250 is just for cleaning. Any damage to carpets, furniture, etc. would incur a higher charge. I don't know if they clean right away to remove the offending odor as soon as possible or if they wait until the end of the cruise. It makes more sense to remove the odor as quickly as possible and if the smoker continues to smoke the next day, another $250 could be charged.

 

At the end of the day, it's their ship. If they don't want people to smoke in certain areas (including the balcony), it's their call.
