Update from Queen Mary 2

The captain advised passengers at 4:40 that the Queen Mary II had just arrived back in the area where the crewmember disappeared, and that the ship was going to slow to 8 knots and work a search pattern with another ship until dusk. He asked all passengers who wished to aid the search to do so from their balconies or Deck 7. There continues to be quite heavy fog.

Captain expressed skepticism about finding him in fog, but decided to turn and search anyway.

As a former mariner I HOPE this is simply an inaccurate statement of the situation. The Coast Guard recently searched a week for two boys lost in Florida ...

If YOU fall off, how long do you think they should look for you?

I can't see CUNARD saying ... well we know he's gone but there was fog so we didn't bother to search . . .

and later posts say that is NOT what happened

however as a former Captain/Master .... if the Captain sounds 'skeptical' it taints the entire search process. "Captain thinks this is a waste of time so . . . "

The Captain must always convey "we WILL find them .. IF WE try very very hard .... because they are our SHIPMATE and they would do it for US"

My parents and other family members are on board. Many people were out on deck helping to search. This was earlier this evening in daylight obviously. Some rumours now that QM2 will head straight to New York now, missing out Halifax. No idea how correct that is as communication is sporadic. But most of all, sympathies lie with the poor man's family and colleagues on board. Utterly tragic

We searched in conjunction with another ship in a pattern co-ordinated by the Canadian Coastguard until just before 9pm when it was so dark that the search was called off and we returned to our course for Halifax. It's very sad on board as the man was only 23 years old.

Words fail me, so I hope you don't mind if quote Psalm 107...

They that go down to the sea in ships,

that do business in great waters;

These see the works of the Lord,

and his wonders in the deep.

For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind,

which lifteth up the waves thereof

They mount up to the heaven,

they go down again to the depths;

their soul is melted because of trouble.

They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man,

and are at their wit's end.

Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble,

and he bringeth them out of their distresses.

He maketh the storm a calm,

so that the waves thereof are still.

Then are they glad because they be quiet;

so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.

Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness,

and for all his wonderful works to the children of men!

Only just read about this on the BBC News website.

How deeply sad, what truly awful news, for the passengers on board, for his fellow crew members and friends, and most of all of course for his family.

Someone so young, with a life ahead of them.

Terrible news.

We are on board too and just want to say that the Captain was outstanding in keeping everyone on the ship aware of what was happening with very frequent calm and clear updates. He thanked the many many passengers who lined the open decks and their balconies looking for the young man. It was with heavy hearts that we turned around and began again to sail towards Halifax.
