Revdoll Posted December 22, 2015 #1 Share Posted December 22, 2015 We are leaving on a 4-day cruise from Galveston in 16 days. Wishing now we booked a 7-day cruise, but time off work is the reason we are doing just a 4-day. So DW and I are thinking that if we stay up for the entire cruise it would feel like an 8-day cruise. Any thoughts on what we can do during the wee hours of the mornings? We are not really sure we can endure not sleeping during the cruise, but might as well give it a shot. My DW thinks we will only make it until 10:00 PM on the first night, but I have faith we can do it.

Davechipp74 Posted December 22, 2015 #4 Share Posted December 22, 2015 (edited) I would not recommend this, even after as little as 36 hours without sleep even a cruise would be not enjoyable. I can relate to the military aspect of this article, it is not fun. http://www.everydayhealth.com/conditions/what-happens-when-you-dont-sleep-days/ Edited December 22, 2015 by DAVECHIPP1974
cincicruisers Posted December 22, 2015 #5 Share Posted December 22, 2015 At light hang out on the loungers by the pool.. If you doze off that is the same as you would do in daytime.
YubaSutter Posted December 22, 2015 #6 Share Posted December 22, 2015 It would only feel like an 8 day cruise if you generally sleep 12 hours/day.
John Reid Posted December 22, 2015 #7 Share Posted December 22, 2015 Yes, it will seem exactly like an eight-day cruise - and with only half the gratuities!
Alexus138 Posted December 22, 2015 #8 Share Posted December 22, 2015 Ive done a 3day, 5day and 7day. Sure, a 4-day will feel shorter than a 7-day. But if u get up around 7:00/8:00am and begin your day....and stay up until midnight im sure u will feel like u got the full cruise experience. Relax and enjoy the time u have. Rare Tapi Posted December 22, 2015 #10 Share Posted December 22, 2015 (edited) No. It will feel more like a very exhausting 4 day trip. It will be miserable. A huge part of me going on vacation is to relax and catch up on rest that I normally don't get at home. Being on the go 24 hours a day would defeat that purpose. But I'll admit that I have partied it up on short cruises before and stayed up all night (although not for 4 days straight), only to return from these mini vacations feeling worse than when I left. mythictravel Posted December 22, 2015 #11 Share Posted December 22, 2015 Or may seem like one really really long day especially as you lose the ability to distinguish waking dreams from reality. Take lots of pictures so you can try to piece together memories of what happened.
USNUZULOOSE Posted December 22, 2015 #12 Share Posted December 22, 2015 I would not be staying up like that. I would enjoy more sleep. And if you live close to the port you can always take on some other shorter cruises to stay refreshed and feel like more vacation time as well. IPlayWithString Posted December 22, 2015 #13 Share Posted December 22, 2015 If our upcoming cruise was in the summertime when I know I wouldn't have to go back to work as soon as I got home (I work for a local school district so I have summers off) and I knew I was going to be cruising without my son..hell yeah. I'd give it a shot. :D
cb at sea Posted December 22, 2015 #14 Share Posted December 22, 2015 A cruise is supposed to be a VACATION...not a marathon! I know you're joking, but why ruin the last 2 days of a vacation?
Revdoll Posted December 22, 2015 Author #15 Share Posted December 22, 2015 Y'all have given me some good ideas for my 4-day cruise. 1. I have skills with the vacuum, so I'll help out with the late night cleaning crew. 2. Sit by the pool at 2 in the morning, I should have best choice of seats" and I can also help "save seats" for the chair hogs as they come out at 5 AM to claim their recliners for the day. 3. Walking around the decks of the ship as a zombie sounds super cool. This is a must do. 4. We don't gamble and sitting in the casino breathing second hand smoke is not our idea of fun. But spending the night at the Pizzeria sounds fantastic. Of course with as fast as they are, I should be able to get at least two slices in about a six hour window. 5. To make the trip seem like an 8-day trip I will start sleeping 12 hours a day for the next 15 days. Thanks for that great tip! 6. Staying up for countless days in a row, would bring back memories of my glorious days in the Army. I'll bring my old uniform and boots with me to make it feel more authentic. 7. Running a marathon on a cruise, now that's a grand idea! Problem is I may end up losing count of the laps I've taken around the small track. How many laps would I need to take to run a marathon on the ship's running track? 8. If I stay up the entire time and take pictures of what I see. Will my pictures show fuzzy people standing around and strange creatures flying through my pictures? That in itself would be worth staying up for. 9. I wonder if I can get away with not paying the tips as I'll be too busy staying up and won't be using my cabin. In fact, I should be refunded for the price of the cabin as I won't be sleeping in it. Oh the bonus of staying up. if I stay up for the entire trip I'll probably be so tired and stressed out that I'll need another vacation when I get home! Cha Ching, Winner, Winner chicken dinner! I'll just be forced to take another cruise! It's a win all the way around!

JohnSpo Posted December 22, 2015 #17 Share Posted December 22, 2015 No I don't think it will be like an eight day cruise because you will be very tired and will not enjoy the cruise. I always enjoy an eight day cruise because it is great to have the one extra day.

Pops, Esq. Posted December 23, 2015 #25 Share Posted December 23, 2015 238. Laps, that is. At 197 yards per lap -- on the Freedom, at least, it's 197 yards per lap. I assume others are at least in the same range -- it will take approximately 238 laps to run 26.2 miles for your onboard marathon.
