Tip the concierge?

Is it typical / customary to tip the concierge?

Please no flare-ups of the Tipping Wars, I just want to make sure that a gratuity wouldn't be insulting for this individual.

It is quite customary. The amount would vary depending on the services rendered to you. Not at all insulting.

^^^^ This...in addition to the wonderful waitstaff in the lounge.

If you never use the lounge and don't use their services, they are likely not going to be expecting anything, but if you are using their services then they will definitely appreciate the tip.

If the concierge provides you with a service, absolutely tip them. If you use the lounge during cocktail hour, it is nice to tip the waiters, some tip daily others the last night of the cruise, and then there are those that don't tip...

We only tip if they help us with something which is more often then not. I can only remember one cruise where we never even spoke to the concierge in the CL once in seven days. It was highly unusual and no tip was given.

I can remember two relatively recent cruises.....and one of them had two concierge's in the lounge...now that was a double no tip....but the waitstaff was amazing....generous tips to them.

We also had two and only asked for help once. They didn't even look up and make eye contact. Never went back. :(

We usually tip the Concierge, and the amount varies according to how much we've used his/her services. We've tipped between $25 and $100, with the latter being for a concierge who went way above and beyond for us and spent a lot of time solving a very frustrating problem in our suite. Twice we didn't tip the Concierge at all because we never used his services and never even truly met him - just saw him in the lounge. We always tip the bar servers - usually cash with each drink, but a couple of times we did it at the end of the cruise.

Once we had the same female Concierge in April that we had 6 weeks later in May on a different ship. We discovered this in talking to her. She took care of several things for us on the April cruise, so we tipped her well and told her we would see her in May when she changed ships. I asked if there were any toiletry items (girlie things) she's like me to bring her, and she gave me a little list! Shampoo, conditioner, lotion, eye shadow, mascara...all her favorite brands/colors, etc. So when we saw her in May we brought her a bag full of girly goodies that she was so excited about. We also tipped her a bit on top of that $50 bag of goodies! She was so good to us, she had a great can-do attitude, and I truly hope we run into her again.

I figure your tip should reflect your appreciation. If the Concierge has done a lot for you, tip well. If you never used their services for anything, blow it off.

Excellent! For the record, the CL waiters were and are going to be tipped... ex. I always tip servers in Vegas when they bring "free" drinks.

So, I guess my next question is, "How much do you tip the concierge, and what did / do you use them for?" As I've never used one on a cruise before, and aren't sure how much I'll use them, what's the thinking for "average / regular" utilization of their services? $20? More? My room steward and waitstaff in MDR, I'll see them and what they do every day, and unless they screw up they've got $50 coming their way. :D Of the things listed as concierge services:

Stationary - don't care

Continental breakfast - don't care, can't see who would

Hors d'oeuvres & drinks - will tip waitstaff as we go

Reservations / tickets - might use them for this once or twice

Spa appointments - seriously doubt we'd do that

Movies / CDs to borrow - might do this once or twice

Pre-order dinner wine - this might be useful

Business services - extremely unlikely we'll use

Private parties - can't see doing that either!

Are there other things they do that have helped make your cruise spectacular? Secret password to be ushered to the REAL party? :D

On our last cruise, the waiters in the CL were fantastic and we tipped accordingly. As far as the concierge.....he never spoke to us nor did we see him interacting with the guests in the lounge. He basically spent his time at his desk looking at his computer. The only time we saw him visiting with guests were if someone initiated a conversation or asked him a question. No tip.

No tip required from me unless they did something over the top which hasn't happened so far.

On AOTS in 2015. Dionne Jolly was the concierge and she was fantastic. She always was available and greeted us by name whenever we saw her aboard the ship...not only in the lounge. Was always ensuring everything was perfect for our vacation. Tips for her and the servers in the lounge...absolutely!

For me (old school), a tip is a thank you for extra services rendered, not an expectation. Having said that, these days we just go with the auto grats. My daughter who waited tables a while ago insists that 20% or above is what one should tip a waiter. We argue about this constantly, but in this day of entitlement, that is the norm. My standard answer, if they earn it, they get it.

But for the concierge, it is not a pre-requisite. On our Legend to Hawaii (10 days) she refused to do one thing we requested, very politely I might add, and spoke to us impolitely on 2 occasions. She did not earn our tip...in fact a complaint. We've had fantastic Diamond concierges before that we have tipped heavily and we know the difference.

On my recent cruise, we did not really use the concierge services much. The main things were getting escorted to the front of the tender line in Belize and escorted to the front of the disembarkation line at the end of the cruise. Other than that, we spoke to him occasionally, when we were in the lounge, but didn't really request any assistance with anything. We tipped him $20 at the end of the cruise.

Would you please share the "one thing" that you reqested which was refused?

This wouldn't happen to be on the Allure would it?

We've usually had friendly interactive concierge. We've always tipped based on any requests we've made as well as their attitude. On Oasis, both concierge sat at the desk the entire time - never ever saw them interacting with guests other than to answer questions if you walked up to the desk. We did end up tipping since one of them did arrange a few things - comedy show, a CK reservation and a cabana at Labadee. I don't know if is unique to Oasis class since they have so many more suites. While we absolutely LOVED the SL and CK, we prefer the friendliness and interaction on the smaller ships.
